After The Best Thing and The Truth S3, I thought why not give Zhang Linghe another chance and follow the hype of Chasing Jade.

After watching the trailer, I hope they dub him over in the actual drama. While he could potentially pull of the physical mannerism of the character, his tone is much better suited for contemporary and the line delivery…

Even just comparing his lines to the female lead, the difference is notable.

In searching for fic inspiration, I came across a line I saved from Kaveh Akbar's Marytr:

"...how the deep seemed to gulp him whole without even opening its mouth."

It really resonates with me about how Wei Shao must feel falling for Manman. She's a competent wife, especially by period standards, so nothing she does seems to be out of character for making him fall for her.

She prepares his meals, follows his wishes in refusing a consort, accompanies him on site visits to the canal construction, etc. He also was never got doted on as a kid, so being thought of as someone to be taken care of must be really refreshing.

He really can't stop her from being a competent wife and also doesn't want to, so he chooses the (not-so) secret third option and falls for her instead.

Suddenly by Kim Bo Kyung - Lee Minho out for revenge against the high-profile people who killed his father with Park Min Young as the presidential bodyguard at his throat trying to catch him. I was and still am SAT for miss Kim Nana.

Fox Rain by Lee Sun Hee - The OG in my heart for significant other is a nine-tailed fox but its modern-day, so hijinks. Shin Min Ah and Lee Seung Gi sell these characters and the combo of romance, drama, and comedy so well.

Hurt by Ali - Rooftop Prince made me fall in love with Han Ji Min as an actress. Very unfortunate the work of others in this drama has been tainted by the ML, but this song still HITS.

That Woman by Baek Ji Young - Yes, this is not a 2010s drama but how can I make a list and not include this ICONIC song. A body swap between spoiled brat and no-nonsense stunt woman oh yeah. They really had me rooting for a man in a ridiculous sequined blue tracksuit.

Reason by Shin Young Jae - Nearly forgot about this banger from Secret Garden as well. Like y'all if you have not seen Secret Garden please watch it right now. I cannot emphasize enough how bonkers the set up is but Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won sell that shit.

Walking Slowly by Shin Young Jae - Another time travel but back to Goryeo period this time with a plastic surgeon who really can't be bothered by the hot, competent bodyguard. Honestly, all I can remember is the hair from this drama.

Wei Shao caught a lynx as a demonstration of his follow thru with the marriage. Gave his girl’s family 500 horses because it’s practical. Indirectly breaks the hairpin he gave Qiao Xiao and doesn’t even notice. For a lord, material items are a means to an end.
