hello,,, can u just explain generally how to start,, idk how to start

Check the newbie tag. Certain things may be out of date due to various Tumblr updates but the method still the same really.

It really depends what kind of roleplayer you are. Doing it on Tumblr, Twitter, Discord, 1x1, groups etc?

Ok so just to let everyone know it seems that the Tumblr gods have allowed this blog to return after being suspended for at least four-five months?? I’m not quite sure what happened but this blog is back now!! It was by pure accident I found out this morning as I didn’t get an email from Tumblr.

The blog I created as a back up called rptipsandadvice will now be inactive until further notice as i’ll be posting here again. I may use that blog to store gifs as i’ve been learning how to make them properly.

Any old messages in inbox have been deleted but you are free to send me FC help requests, gif hunt masterlist requests, shoutouts etc.

Could you maybe explain the difference between a 1x1 and an indie roleplay? I haven't been able to figure it out.

I will do my best as I havn’t really tried indie roleplaying properly, just dabbled.

1x1 roleplaying

Where you roleplay with only one other person. It can either be a  friendship or a romance or something else. You have your own little plot  and you mainly do paras with each other and other such things. I know  lots of people do plots that usually groups won’t let you do. Nobody  outside your 1x1, unless you allow them to joins in on your 1x1.

Indie roleplaying

Where you are not in any particular group roleplay, but you play as a certain character (either canon from a show or OC), and you tag your starters with like “Glee indie rp“ or “indie rp“ etc and respond to anyone who replies. I know there are closed indie groups around, but it is a similar concept and you just track a certain tag and not it’s linked with any roleplay.

Example is someone sends you a meme quote in your inbox like “Where did you go?“ and then you reply IC as someone. Then the person who sent you that quote continues the para or  conversation and so forth. That is one style of indie roleplaying.

So this year i’ve made it a goal to properly learn how to make gifs. So far so good but there is still a lot of work to do. I am playing about with things to get practice. I also downloaded a recent episode of Doctor Who to make gif packs of the following actors:

Annabel Scholey, Craig Parkinson, Jacob Anderson, Jemma Regrave, Jodie Whittaker, John Bishop, Mandip Gil, Nadia Albina and Thaddea Graham.

A test gif I did last night gave me this (no idea what is going on with her hair but i’ll work on it):

i have a question: what's your opinion (or the general opinion) on being in a relationship with someone IRL that you're rping with and you join a group together or you have respective 1x1s and writing explicit sex with someone else? like, obviously OOC and IC are different and separate but what if one partner is uncomfortable with it?

I personally have not been in this situation and it's not really my place to judge other people's relationships. However, I do know a few Tumblr couples who then met IRL who have done this. Some of the relationships are still going and some couples are now separated.

I think as long as the couple are open with each other and set boundaries about what is and isn't ok it should be fine.

If one person is uncomfortable about how their partner is writing with someone then they seriously need to have an open conversation about their feelings. If there is no open communication and trust in a relationship whether romantic or a friendship then it just is left simmering until it could be too late to resolve.

What would you say is the best way to go about creating a bio for a character once you have the key points of the plot and what the character is?

With bios I get ahead of myself. In the past I may have written 8 paragraphs as I have such an imaginative mind or I was just in the moment and realised that might have been a bit too much..

If you are doing this for a roleplay, check any details about the roleplay like the plot and what other people have for their backstories. Try not to make it too similar to others. Having 5+ people in a roleplay with a similar backstory can get boring and repetitive. Others may criticise the admin for accepting multiple people similar stories etc.

If you are doing a bio for a canon character from a show etc, try to put elements of canon into it, that way the admin will feel like you get the character. So if in canon the character went to live in New York to start a career in Broadway - you can do an entire paragraph about how that is your character’s dream etc.

Anyway, how to set it out.

What they were like as a child / Where they have lived

Anything traumatic happened with them?

What they were like at high school?

Their personality now and why are they like that?

What do they want to do in the future?

Do they have any health issues going against them?

Are they keeping any secrets?

What is their sexuality or gender identity?

That can fill at least four-five paragraphs depending how you write it. You can also include things like their kids, marriage, relationships etc depending where/when it’s set.

Just have those bullet points set out and then write underneath the answer, then like how you do when  doing an assignment for school/college etc, have it make sense and join it together.

Don’t aim to have it 7/8 paragraphs. Aim for at least 2-3 then see what happens.

Hey folks! I have a frustrating problem. It takes me absolutely forever to draft bios and replies. Like, I’m talking about 2-3 hours spent writing something half decent. Am I the only one? Is there something I can do to improve my speed and get ideas rolling?

Hmm I suppose it depends on various factors which includes:

How motivated you are for doing replies or bios.

Do you you have a disability which affects this?

How much pressure is being put on you?

What is your typing speed like?

Your mental health.

There are many other factors but those are the main things I can think of. Some things you can do to maybe help quicken the pace of how you reply  to things.

Find a playlist or just background noise which helps you relax, I find Rainy Mood helps me a lot.

Look at your surroundings - Where you write most could be affecting things,  maybe change where you write or even just let some fresh air in.

Have  mutuals send you memes - You could have a rp blog where you follow other roleplayers and it will help you respond to things IC in a certain setting and it will help you write little responses that won’t need responses back.

Practice, practice, practice - When not doing replies and you have time just write random backstories on things you enjoy and time yourself. Aim to try and write say a two paragraph bio in a certain time frame - one at normal speed which you write currently and the next one at a pace which  is quicker. Write various scenarios and see which ones you like to write  most. It could be you are writing stuff in the wrong setting.

I am sure your writing is good to be honest, it is just you could be self critical of your writing and think  everything is rubbish etc. Try and find a mutual who you trust and ask to beta read some things you have written. You may find those things are  not half decent like you say. The more they say how good you are, the  more confident you become.
