Life in Corvos meant life under Imperial rule. There came a day that her parents were unable to give the full amount of their share of the tributum, and the Garleans came. They threatened to shut down their business and force them into slavery if the remaining money could not be scrounged up, but A'shani was quick to come to her parents' defence.

In return for the guaranteed safety of her parents and their livelihoods, she offered herself up in service to the Empire - much to her parents' dismay. The officers accepted the trade - satisfied that the loss of their daughter was punishment enough - and A’shani was sent off to become an Imperial spy. A price she would reluctantly pay for her parents’ safety, though in the end it would amount to nothing.
