okay but i'm facedown on the floor at the idea of ellie getting hurt in jackson and just assuming that she has to handle it herself

like it's not bad enough that she's incapacitated, but it's bad enough that like. she HAS to go to the clinic (maybe a suspected broken arm or something). and like. in fedra, if you got hurt but could walk, you took yourself to the infirmary. there was no one to coddle you or baby you.

so she just assumes it's the same thing here. like yeah joel takes care of her and they're close and she falls asleep on him during movies but this?? so boring. and he already did so much time in the hospital. she knows how this goes. this isn't joel's job. she can't bother him with this.

and baby is freaking out a little bc she HATES the clinic, but she gets herself down there and explains what's going on

and joel beelines right towards her and takes a knee and is looking her over and asking what hurts and if the doctor said anything and ellie is still?? dude?? why are YOU here??

and it turns out that someone went to get him. that was the wait. and joel gently scolds her about him having to find out she was clinic-level hurt from someone else and ellie internally is like?? telling you? was an option?? since fucking WHEN???

and joel ends up sitting by her and answering questions for her when she needs him to, and ellie just gets to soak in havng a legal guardian who does stuff like this for her and holds her hand when she's hurt and is just Her Person.

you see that little twitch his mouth does right at the very end of this gif. you see the little tug at the corner of his mouth. the anger that’s washing over him in this moment. he’s just found her, in whatever context they’re doing for the show, and he has not seen her face yet. he’s turned her around (my thinking) to face him and she punches his chest and shoves at him to get away because she thinks he’s one of them. but he grabs her face (so damn gently im biting myself) to hold her and to show her that it’s me. but what he isn’t expecting is the blood. the blood on her face. her bloody nose. you see his eyes dart back and forth because he’s seeing this and taking it all in and realizing what’s happened to her. not the full extent of it all, but enough to know that these fuckers hurt his little girl enough to make her nose bleed and instill this fear in her. and it makes him furious. and that twitch of his mouth is cut. it’ll just get bigger once we get the whole scene. it’s just like episode 5 when henry shot at joel’s feet and joel damn near growled at henry for preventing him from reaching out and protecting and comforting ellie. and in this moment, he’s seeing what’s been done to her and he sees red.
