i think it's neat that vampires have come to represent all kinds of things, early vampires often represented disease and fears of what might happen after death, especially a "bad" death.

since then vampires have been metaphors for the aristocracy that just takes and takes, old fuddy duddys that just can't get with the modern times (Dracula), repressed desires of the flesh that we feel shame about (Nosferatu 2024), the darkest impulses of the human mind, ostracized minorities (True Blood), the resilience of the human spirit (Vampire Chronicles), sexual predators (Carmilla), moral corruption (The Vampyr), cultural appropriation and forced assimilation (Sinners 2025) and more!

people are so creative with it! and while zombies, ghosts, and witches are also concepts that continue to appear in media and there's lots of creativity there too, something about vampires just has so much flexibility and opportunity for all kinds of things.

i learned about "haint" from Sinners (2025) through the Articulate Coven podcast, where they talk about what a haint is and about haint blue porch ceilings in the American south.

Basically it's tradition to paint the ceiling of the porch and sometimes doors or window frames blue or blue/green to keep the haints, aka haunts, away.
