For Hansry Week:

I wrote a short fic for 'Flowers' and ended up combining it with 'First Time'. Then decided I wanted to draw a scene from it.

Word Count: 600~

CW: Blood, PTSD

Summary: Hans' defending the trebuchet at the Siege of Talmberg being his first kill. Henry is there for him.

(Un-beta'd- this was a 'cross the finish line no matter what' motivation)

Henry tasted the iron tang of enemy blood on his lips. He sat by a stream and washed it away as best he could. The distinct feeling of it never really left, but it would dull after a nice round of beer with his men, which is what he was making himself somewhat presentable for right now.

The camp was in higher spirits than he had anticipated, though he noticed the absence of one particularly seasoned merry maker.

He only saw Hans briefly on the battlefield, cutting down men with the same ferocity and confidence as he did with everything in life.

Henry found Hans standing motionless in their tent. Still fully armored, blood streaked on his chest plate, dried splatters on his face emphasizing his blue eyes that were blankly staring at the ground.

“Everything alright sir? They’ve opened a cask and - “

Hans’ eyes snapped up to look at Henry. There was a distressed deadness in them that Henry recognized. Without saying a word, Henry stepped closer and began to unbuckle his Lord’s armor.

Hans followed his movements, not resisting, no quip about putting hands on a nobleman. Just silent inhale and exhale over and over.

The rhythm broken when Henry finally removed the last piece of armor and set it aside. He turned to grab a cloth from the water basin to wash some of the dried blood off of Hans’ face.

As he brought the cloth close, Hans snatched his wrist. Eyes finally focusing on his squire in front of him. “I killed a man for the first time today.” He said quietly.

The deadness that Henry recognized in his eyes earlier. This had been Hans’ first proper battle and he was just now feeling the full reality of it.

“You fought valiantly today my Lord.”

Hans let go of Henry’s wrist and allowed him to wipe the blood off his forehead.

“You will get used to it. Unfortunately”

The young Lord met Henry's eyes. Taking in the full meaning of the experience behind those words.

“Sleep will be difficult, but I’ve found ways to manage.” said Henry as he wrung out the blood soaked cloth and placed it near the water basin.

Hans finally moved on his own and sat on his cot, unconsciously touching his face where his squire had just cleaned him.

Henry dug through his belongings and returned on bent knee to his Lord’s side with a sprig of Lavender.

“Put this near your head when you sleep, inhaling it always calms me down.”

Henry placed it on Hans’ pillow.

“Thank you.”

Henry stood up, small smile on his face.

“If you need someone to talk to, I’m here for you. I can let the men know-”

Hans shook his head.

“It wouldn’t be proper to not at least make an appearance after a victory like today.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Give me a few moments and I’ll join the table shortly. Have a mug waiting for me.”

“Of course my Lord”

Henry quietly stepped out of the tent.

The men cheered when he approached and promptly had a mug of lukewarm ale shoved in his hand.

Hans joined the group silently, letting others tell their tales of battle prowess.

Henry couldn’t help sparing glancing over at him. In his Lord's hand was the Lavender sprig, held close to his face, long inhales and exhales. Their eyes met briefly. Hans smiled weakly back at him.

Because I like to bring pain and suffering to our KCD chat, I kicked the figurative door open one day and proposed that, what if, Henry wore armor for the suicide mission, so Hans would be the one helping him into it - and how it would make it crucially clear that it would be the only thing keeping Henry alive if it came to it. And how Hans couldn't do anything else than pray that it would all be enough. And the idea just stayed with me, with the allmighty lord Capon, who never did anything like this to someone else, and how it would make their roles very much reversed. On top of all that angst, of course.

So. That led me to draw this, hopefully you enjoy it!

I actually think they’re a big reason why I pivoted so hard into Hansry tbh. Because the way Tom & Luke are so insanely supportive and happy to engage with the ship and its fanbase has been so healing. Like to have a queer ship not be treated as some weird, dirty little secret that no one is allowed to bring up is just. wow. So damn refreshing. I am REBORN. 🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️
