FUN FACT: In real life, emperor Commodus himself did fight in the arena. Unbeknownst to him, soldiers that prepared the gladiator to fight, would stab the opponent in the back to weaken them. As you see here in this scene between Commodus & Maximus before the final battle.

I love how much Ridley poured into making Gladiator as accurate as possible, when depicting the history of the Roman Empire. Even adding little history facts like this that not many know about.

Back in Roman times there was a story of a powerful general by the name of “Maximus Decimus Meridius” an honorable & noble man who was forced into slavery & trained to become a Gladiator after his wife & son were brutally murdered. Ordered by his advisors son Commodus, whom killed his father & became Romes new found emperor. Determined to avenge the wrongs done to him & the empire, Maximus rises through the ranks in the arena with his popularity growing it begins to threaten the throne & he now finds himself face to face with Emperor Commodus in the final battle.
