since this didn’t have a character, I just went with luis!

-> athleticism:

luis is remarkably lithe for a man of his stature, with the lean and graceful muscle that develops naturally from an active lifestyle. he is far more dexterous and limber than he is brawny. while studying abroad, he took an interest in fencing because it reminded him of the knights in the fairy tales that he and his grandfather used to read. he progressed quickly in the sport and eventually headed his university’s competitive team.

-> sleeping habits:

a bit of an insomniac, luis often spends the early hours of the night reading rather than sleeping. he developed the habit of sleeping rarely and lightly while in grad school, where he also took up smoking to relax at night. his energy is never truly dampened, though, and he’s known to frequently catnap throughout the day.

Thank you, dear Ness! I am very sorry for how rambly and long this is--but I am excited to talk about this project for the first time :’). I am hoping to make this an interactive web series with a visual element. It’s all very D&D based too 

Dionaea Voxhollow

This world (tentatively labeled Elyria) is teeming with the supernatural (merfolk, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, fae, witches, etc.) who coexist in relative harmony with non-magical individuals.

Dionaea was born to two aristocratic liches—witches who seek to defy death through necromancy.

Witches in this universe are not born. They must forge a pact with a patron God who will grant them their magical gifts. The ritual to do so varies between Gods, but it often involves some significant sacrifice and a promise of devotion.

Dionaea was born a shapeshifter—a rare recessive trait that does not require either parent to be a shapeshifter. Her form is that of a black cat.

Her parents viewed the birth of a shifter in their lineage as a blessing from their patron God. Her family revered her for her gift, but she was kept sheltered from the world. They forbade her to leave their estate for fear of what might befall her.

Naturally, she craved freedom. She became an adapt escape artist with aid from her animal form. Her punishment for being caught, however, was to be locked in a birdcage where she could not shift back into her human form.

At age eighteen, unexpected help arrived in the form of a new maidservant. This maidservant was a witch and a disciple of a nature God, Viridios. She spoke to Dionaea in secret about guidance she had received from Viridios to help free her, “an animal in need”.

Dionaea studied under this woman for two years and then agreed to undergo the ritual to obtain magic from Viridios. Her devotion was accepted—her first act of magic was to create a portal through her bedroom mirror to escape her home.

Her magic initially manifested through portal creation. Mirrors are her effortless conduit—the particles of sand used to blow the glass connect her to Viridios’ energy—but she has learned to use paintings, photographs, and other artworks (such as statues) as channeling points as well.

It is easier for her to transport to a specific location using an artwork depicting an equivalent landscape; for example, it requires less focus for her to travel to a beach if she is channeling a portal through a painting of a shoreline. Her second most powerful gift is summoning magic. She has successfully conjured small animals, plants (through chloromancy), and objects, but never a human-sized creature.

The guidance of her mentor led her to the capital city of Elyria, where she sought asylum with the members of an underground magical organization called the Covenant of the Veiled Thorn.

After a few years of studying under them, Dionaea grows weary of the group when a series of necromantic-themed, power-hungry murders point to its involvement. Her dual supernatural capabilities as both an experienced shifter and a powerful terramancer make her a target for the attacks.

She begins combing through old tomes and artifacts in search of ancient magics that might release her from her union with Viridios. This choice is only partially for safety—for once in her life, she would like to be truly free of any and all bonds that hold her down.
