imaginary fic game!

Frollo sat on the worn wooden bench, reciting the story of Saint Aphrodisius to the hunchback crouched like a broken gargoyle at his feet, half-hearing, half-understanding, lips fumbling the name—Aphrodee… Afroshish—until Frollo’s mouth pinched tight with impatience and he said sharply, “Aphrodisius, Quasimodo. Say it back.” 

The boy tried, tried again, but the name caught like stones in his throat, and he looked up with wide, earnest eyes that didn’t know why they were failing. Frollo sighed through his nose, gathered his cassock with a rustle, turned for the stone steps, but was stopped by a tug—gentle, trembling—on the hem of his robe, Quasimodo’s huge hand swallowing the white fabric, his voice raw: “I—I lo… love you.” 

Frollo froze for half a breath, then only patted the hunchback’s tangled red hair like one might bless a loyal dog, eyes already on the stairs, mouth locked shut as if even kindness would damn him. 

Alone again among the bells, Quasimodo rocked slightly, the stone at his back colder than before, whispering “Say it back,” though he wasn’t sure if anyone ever would.

Probably my favorite scene from the project, it was so fun to design the set and making sure it worked well from multiple angles.
