(Chapter 1) My sister pointed out that they wear helmets on their bikes now, gotta set a good example for the children.
(Chapter 2) Sudden definitive relationship between Uncle Titus and Jupe’s dad, Titus is his much older half brother. Half, huh Elizabeth? Where are we going with that?
Jupe is described as suddenly having much darker hair now that he’s older (almost 14), it’s turned almost black. But Elizabeth, he already had black hair???
Poor Peter is worrying over Bob, he’s late. Love an anxious boy. (Though he feels more anxious than normal.)
Pete is also a bit insecure about what he contributes to the team, there there buddy.
Pete’s mom is descended from Spaniards but she’s absolutely giving spiritualist white woman energy. She’s big into “alternative beliefs” and will make use of any cultures spiritual beliefs.
Another Pete’s mom thing, she apparently is a big believer in ✨reincarnation✨.
More backstory, Pete’s dad is a second generation Mexican immigrant, and his last name was originally Crespillo before they changed it to Crenshaw.
Changing the Bavarian brothers Hans and Conrad to Norwegian brothers Leif and Magnus is such an unnecessary change, at that point you’re just changing it to change things.
I get that this is the first book so we’re still establishing things but this dialogue has some very clunky exposition, very “as we all know” *proceeds to explain thing that everyone already knows so the reader can know too.*

I wanted to get both the Amazon hardcover and the Barnes and Noble hardcover for the first book to compare them and see which one I want to buy going forward, but I waited too long and now the Barnes and Noble one is ‘temporarily out of stock.’ 😔
All I can hope is that they really do mean temporarily and they’ll come back in stock at some point.

(Chapter 1) The boys have cell phones, look out world.
Rocky Beach is a decent amount north of LA, I forget if we established that specifically where it was in the old series or not. 🤔
Oh no, the boys are about to lose access to the Rolls-Royce. Eh, I’m sure they’ll figure something out.
William Worthington?? Elizabeth I’m simply not vibing with that first name.

(Chapter 1) If Hector Sebastian thinks it’s time for Bob to start writing his own introductions to the cases why is there no introduction on this book?!? An introduction from the pov of Bob would be delightful.

(Chapter 1) The Dixie fire being only a few years ago confirms that this is set right around now, which I knew it wasn’t gonna be a period piece but it still feels weird to think that they’re in the 2020s.

(Chapter 2) Just misread Jupe saying that “at least 10% of all fires are deliberately set.” as the complete inverse of that and thought 90% sounded awfully high. Sorry Jupe. 😅

(Chapter 1) Just started the new Three Investigators book and Elizabeth is taking a big swing right out the gate by having no introduction at the beginning of the book. 😔
And Bob being half Chinese is certainly not something I saw coming.

Bob: I bet you don’t understand why I did that, do ya? Well, the way I figure it, a bad deal is one thing-
Pete: You happy?
Bob: Huh?
Pete: You’re happy?
Bob: Happy? Sure I’m…
Pete: Yeah. Well then, don’t explain it to me. You see, I might start to understand you and that would scare me.

Translates to: "The ghost of a ventriloquist in a cursed doll," Pete said flatly. "Great. Exactly my thing. Will definitely be my favorite case."
Thank you google translate for revealing this very funny, very Pete thing being said here.
