In the wake of the absolutely vile James Gunn Superman reboot -- where the poor, much-degraded Kryptonian looks like a cross between a boy band reject and a ridiculously cheap and incompetent cosplayer -- I felt compelled to share these AI art pieces I generated of a version of Superman that people would actually like.

For a while now, I've wondered if perhaps what Superman could use to refresh the character and appeal to young kids again is a makeover in the vein of Disney's animated Robin Hood. All the classic characters we know and love, but taking place in a parallel universe where's they're all anthropomorphic animals. (And also, being written and produced by people who aren't left-wing activists and/or total hacks.) Certainly with the evil of the World Economic Forum and its transhuman agenda on full display, the shameless corruption and campaigns of death waged by the likes of Bill Gates and Anthony Fauci, and everything spilling out about MK-Ultra, suddenly the likes of Lex Luthor and the rest of Superman's earthbound rogues gallery are a lot more plausible. (Luthor alone could be a composite analogue for both Gates and Fauci, but without any true loyalty to the globalist powers he works for.) There's now a real-world context for much of the Superman mythos to exist without much question, and an opportunity to engage in some Rod Serling/'60s Star Trek social commentary as an underscore to the high adventure and sci-fi action.

Personally, I think that would a winning combination. Wild sci-fi/fantasy adventure and epic stakes for the whole family, cute cartoon animals for the kids, and weightier real-world subtext for adults. Not to mention that presenting Superman as an anthropomorphic bunny would go a long way toward undoing the trend of the last 32 years of making him a punching bag and a victim. Regular humanoid Superman has been emotionally/verbally abused, beaten, mutilated, and killed off so much that people are desensitized to it. The Superman pictured above? Only the most malicious, nihilistic and meanspirited of fanboys and fangirls would want him treated the same way. Everyone else would actually want this Superman to be a hero, to kick ass and take names and be a leader of men. In other words, a Superman who actually lives up to his name.

You could also have fun with reinterpreting the other Superman characters as animals as Robin Hood did with that mythos' regulars. Lex Luthor? A hairless cat (although that would be his own fault due to an unfortunate lab accident). Brainiac? A mechanized jackal. Darkseid? A pit bull. Doomsday? A deformed rhinoceros. Lana Lang, Superman's ex-girlfriend from childhood? A red squirrel, similar in design and personality to the horny squirrel who stalked King Arthur in The Sword in the Stone. Mxyzptlk? A weasel. And so on. The possibilities would be pretty endless and potentially very marketable to a younger audience that otherwise wouldn't be interested at all in Superman. And let's face it; younger, newer fans are exactly what the franchise needs.

But obviously, good writing and restoring the integrity of the major characters would be paramount. There's been a glut of bad Superman media across all bases for decades now. A GOOD version of the character is long overdue, and a Robin Hood-style take on the mythos wouldn't be a bad place to start,

For anyone wondering, these are all recycled FX clips from The Motion Picture. Wrath of Khan was filmed on such a tight budget that they had to reuse the Apogee/Entertainment Effects footage as stock shots, rather than being able to film all the Enterprise footage fresh. I think even the first warp speed scene of the Enterprise was a mix-and-match of Motion Picture footage and new ILM speed blur animation. We don’t get a pure ILM Enterprise shot until the first encounter with the Reliant, which was a total ILM creation.

It’s also worth noting that ILM hated the Enterprise shooting model, because it was (a) huge, (b) extremely heavy, and (c) apparently wasn’t wired properly when it was first built in 1979. The master electrician who maintained the shooting models thought the Enterprise was an electrical hazard waiting to happen, and he had to rewire it before ILM felt safe working with it. It was a big production just getting that thing to fly.

There are two reasons why Superman had a long hair in the ‘90s: The REAL reason and the later excuse DC gave years after the fact.

At the time DC did the ‘90s-era “Death of Superman,” the beefcake du jour of the era was Fabio Lanzoni. I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, Acapulco HEAT, romance novel covers...yeah, that guy. And DC had been wanting to court more female readers. So when Superman recovered from the Doomsday incident, what better way to entice the chicks than a Fabio-inspired makeover? Not only did DC cop to it in-universe (Maggie Sawyer called Superman “Fabio” when she saw him for the first time), but Dan Jurgens admitted to it on one of HSN’s comic book collectible shows. The problem being, of course, that Superman with long hair didn’t look like Fabio Lanzoni at all, but rather like Andy Gibb. And with artists like Tom Grummett and Barry Kitson drawing Clark as a youthful heartthrob, the Andy Gibb resemblance became impossible to miss.

However, after DC’s attempt to weasel out of marrying Lois and Clark in sync with the TV show if the same name went down in flames, the creative team started claiming that it was the TV show’s fault Superman had been sporting long hair, pointing to Dean Cain’s longer hair in the pilot episode as their new excuse. One small problem: Cain only had longer hair for that one episode, and had Ye Olde Short Super-Hair for the rest of the series. And even at that, his hair in the pilot wasn’t the flowing locks of the comics. It was the hair of someone who was a couple weeks overdue at the barber shop. Simply put, DC had a grudge against Lois & Clark for making them honor their joint agreement and wanted to blame them for a decision that had proven controversial. (So much so that when DC tried to force Burnett/Dini/Timm to use the long hair in the animated series, they were met with staunch refusal.)

As far as who dug Superman’s Andy Gibb look in the ‘90s...that depends on who you ask. According to the creative teams of the time, the long hair was a hit with women and a miss with dudes. But considering they tried to blame Lois & Clark for the long hair well after previously admitting to chasing the Fabio craze, and considering their idea of the perfect man for Lois was the scummy, scuzzy Jeb Friedman, anything the claim should be taken with a grain of salt.

Why, out of all the decades, did Superman have a mullet in the 90s? You'd think he would have had one in the 80s.

In a sense, it’s logical his hair grew longer after the process of resurrection (he didn’t have time to groom properly due to the fact he was in a kind of coma), but, being that the case, he should’ve grown a beard too.

They probably had it in the “to do list” of the 80s, but they forgot. 

It was a stupid detail because what hair style Superman rocks also Clark does. and that’s a give away of the secret identity. Specially because both disappeared at the same time. But it’s comics, you know.

This one was kind of a twofold experiment. One, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman had a solid cast, but the show itself was plagued with bad writing, bad costuming, bad production values, and no idea what it was doing with Superman in general. So I was wondering what it might have looked like had the show been of legitimate quality. Two, John Shea was done dirty by the show’s decision to make Lex Luthor an evil Pepe Le Pew, stalking and obsessing over Lois Lane to the exclusion of all else. And let’s be frank: that frog-eating clone storyline was a shit way for Luthor to go out. (To my relief, Dean Cain felt the same way when I met him at a local comic con 8 years ago.) I definitely had an itch to see what might have been if Shea’s Luthor and Cain’s Superman had a proper final battle royale. Thanks to Mr. Williams, we now have that.

And yes, that is the Smallville Season 11 Supersuit. It’s probably my favorite Superman costume to date, it obviously isn’t ever going to be used in any other incarnation (assuming the franchise even lasts another decade), so why not let Dean Cain wear it, if only in illustrated form? It’s a definite upgrade from the cheap, crappy-looking suits he did have to wear.
