Gateway Fic or Ruining of Canon?: The Double-Edged Sword of Reading Fanfiction Without Knowing the Source Material
One thing you should know about me is this: I love Outsider POVs an unhealthy amount. I have a separate tab open for this specific tag on my browser and I obsessively reload it every few hours. There’s just something about them that uniquely tickles my brain in a way that other kinds of fics don’t. Maybe it’s some sense of schadenfreude, reading from this out-of-the-loop perspective while we, the readers, are in the know. The feeling of “I know something that you don’t.” Maybe it’s getting to see our favourite characters from a fresh perspective.
In DC comic Outsider POVs, specifically Batman ones, we get to see what Gotham thinks of their resident vigilantes and how the Bats’ dynamics with each other looks like to an outsider, who doesn’t know the full extent of the intricacies of their relationships.
There are a lot of reasons why I enjoy Outsider POVs, one of which is the main point of this post.
PART I: GATEWAY FIC
I really do owe it to the POV Outsider tag. Because of it, I have been introduced to so many new fandoms. They've been either the final push I needed to get into fandoms that I knew of but was never really interested in or blindside me and pull me into a new fandom entirely.
Reading spooky eldritch Danny POVs finally got me into Danny Phantom. One bored scroll and random click introduced me to ROTTMNT, a new favourite of mine (as a Disney kid who grew up with 2012 airing and disliked it, suffice to say Rise's magic and vibrant art was what drew me in). I read a Julie and the Phantoms Outsider POV fic out of curiosity, which made me look it up, and the phenomenal music was the final nail in the coffin. (Please do yourself a favour and listen to the soundtrack.) The onslaught of Good Omens fics flooding the tag following the release of S2, not that I knew it at the time, prompted me to check it out, and lo’ and behold, I am waiting for S3 and praying for my cottagecore-husbands happy ending. Reading a social media AU for Red, White and Royal Blue pushed me to finally buy the book.
They’ve also gotten me back into fandoms. I fell in love with ATLA again after reading a fic about the palace staff’s opinions on Fire Lord Zuko during the start of his reign; I got back into Assassination Classroom and Haikyuu because of delightful outsider fics. I also started reading Miraculous Ladybug fics again after dropping the whole thing mid-S3, which was a nice full-circle moment since MLB is what got me into fanfic in the first place.
The point is, Outsider POVs have been my gateway into a lot of amazing fandoms that I would not have otherwise checked out and my way back into fandoms that I haven’t been in for a while.
However, reading fanfiction without knowing the source material can be a double-edged sword. And as of last month, I finally cut myself with it.
PART II: RUINING OF CANON
Fanfiction is never really an accurate portrayal of canon. By very definition, it cannot be and it seldom is. Fanfiction has a warped lens — characters, their dynamics and the worlds in which they inhabit are written based on an author’s interpretation of the source material. Most fanfic authors actively try to change the source material when they find a part of it lacking or unsatisfactory. That’s the point of fanfiction. Fanfiction exists to explore the infinite possibilities of worlds that could have been, of timelines that never came to pass, of relationships that could have been forged and nurtured but never were.
But what happens when you, as a reader, are exposed to fanon first? What happens when you end up liking fanon more than canon?
The short answer: Disappointment and a smaller bank account.
The long answer: You could say that I had it coming. I never really liked dark fantasy, but I love every Six of Crows fanfic I’ve read so I finally decided to read the books. But, gods, I am struggling. And it sucks so much because I do love the characters and Ketterdam and the Suicide Squad-like concept. I can read fanfic for 5 hours straight but barely make my way through a single chapter. I tried switching to another book and coming back to it and still, I trudge through it. It’s terrible. Have I fallen for a romanticised, fanon version of SoC that delivers the found family of criminals that I was promised? Do the books not have that vibe and that’s why I can’t get into them, because I’ve been riding on false expectations?
This is a first for me. I have no issues with spoilers and such because I still enjoy knowing how we got to that point as much as I enjoy going in blindly. I learned the entirety of BNHA via osmosis by reading fanfiction but I still liked the anime when I watched it. Similarly, I read PJO fanfiction long before I read the series, and I still had a delightful time reading Percy's adventures. The fact that I’m not experiencing the same thing with SoC is truly, deeply upsetting. I’m still holding out hope since I'm already halfway through but I might have to DNF if this drags on for another month.
TLDR; There’s nothing wrong with reading fanfic of fandoms you’re not a part of. It might get you into it like the numerous times it did for me. But it could also end up with you liking the fics more than the source material. So, be warned, I guess.
(Also, if someone has a solution to my SoC problem, do advise, please and thank you. DNF is a last resort.)
#rant#six of crows#fanfiction#reading slump#books and reading#a small cry for help#living a little dangerously with my reading choices has come to bite me in the ass

Like previous reblogs said, it's giving total B.E.A.S.T. vibes! Love it.
If you don't mind suggestions, I'd change some of your modified lyrics so it flows better.
For example:
And I will do nothing less than what I please
please > plan to rhyme with your modified 'clan', which could also elude to the fact that Rise Leo is the team strategist.
You and your clan are inaned and uninformed
Smug wannabes who don't heed when you've been warned
clan > kin (but pronounced with a long i, so it sounds like keen) so it still matches with wannabes
'Cause when I brought out the Kraang I killed
Could be modified as 'Cause when I brought out Kraang Sub-Prime's head, similar to the original song since you left 'wrinkled face was turning red'. This is assuming the Rise turtles have demolished the Kraang completely.
Alternatively, you could change the face red line so it becomes
'Cause when I brought out the Kraang I killed
Couldn't help but observe
That you were looking pale and sounding shrill
Though I'm not a big fan of this change. If anyone has a better idea, feel free to share.
And why would we avoiding war?
That's what we're created for
'And why would we be avoiding war'/ 'And why would we avo-id war' (drag the o out and up the melody) depending if you want to keep the -ing
and
'That's what we were created for' so it fits the syllables of the original
Overall though, I love the animatic and your brain! Keep up the good work!

Woozi and SVT: The God of Music and His Twelve Muses
First off, I know I'm super late to the party, but I've come out of my exam-induced shell to congratulate Seventeen on winning the Grand Daesang! CONGRATS GUYS! It's been a long time coming.
As a Woozi bias, my favourite genre is Seventeen taking every opportunity to appreciate Woozi's work. They'll always be his first and biggest fans. He creates songs for them and they in turn act as heralders, spreading his music throughout the universe loudly and proudly. Woozi is SVT's god of music and SVT are his muses, and I will die on this hill.
So anyway, recent Woozi appreciation moments.

Mingyu thanks Bumzu and Woozi in his speech. The other members push Woozi towards the mic stand, and Mingyu hands the precious daesang over with a joyous grin.

Spirit Weapons AU
Soul Eater meets Miraculous Ladybug meets TMNT.
Summary:
In an alternate reality where the Resistance fails very early on, the other leaders decide to seal the turtles' souls in their weapons and send them back in time to guide their younger selves. However, in her haste, Renet severely miscalculates.
In another world, when Hamato Yoshi escapes following the battle between him and Oroku Saki, he takes with him a photo of his family and four soul-possessed mystic weapons that have been passed down the clan for generations.
==
Takes place in S1 EP1 of TMNT 12, this AU is a What-If scenario in which the Rise turtles' souls are bounded to their weapons and sent across space and time, resulting in the 2012 turtles having both mystic abilities and four new chaotic mentors that happen to be older alternate versions of themselves from an apocalyptic future.
Longer Description Below
An AU where the Resistance fails very early on and Future Rise souls are transferred into their weapons in hopes of guiding their past selves to prevent the apocalypse. Instead of Mikey, the Rise version of Renet sends them back in time but miscalculates, sending them to Feudal Japan of the 2012 universe.
The weapons are enchanted to respond to only the turtles' souls (but unbeknownst to anyone, any version of the turtles), and so their souls and mystic abilities have remained dormant for generations. The weapons end up in the hands of a man whose descendant would later found the ninja clan Hamato, and the weapons became priceless heirlooms passed down the family from generation to generation.
Following the battle with Oroku Saki, Hamato Yoshi escapes with a photo of his family and the set of weapons that are considered the pride of the Hamato Clan. Several years later, a mutated Splinter allows his teenage sons to wield the weapons as a test of worth before he lets them go to the surface. He expects his sons to prove themselves as Hamato ninjas, not a multi-coloured light show, the bursts of powerful magic and the reveal that his clan's heirlooms have hosted the souls of his sons from another universe.

Never watched Samurai Rabbit, only saw the trailer and some clips here and there but the general vibe I'm getting is this.
Rise × Samurai Rabbit Leosagi's ship dynamic is "Dumbass x Dumbass" except Hamato "Face Man" Leonardo is a paranoid smartass who enjoys and chooses to be a dumbass cringe-fail loser 99.9% of the time because that's way more fun while Yuichi "No thoughts, head empty" Usagi is a dumbass cringe-fail loser with zero social cues who happens to have (very) occasionally bright moments.

Rise Rant: Leo's Sword Situation
Yes, this is a call-out post.
I obsessively reload the Rottmnt page on AO3 every day so I'm caught up with most of the new/updated fics, which is how this phenomena came to my attention.
There are a decent amount of fics where Leo still uses an odachi instead of his iconic twin katana after unlocking Hamato Ninpō. I know some Rise fans were unhappy with the reversion to the OG weapons and stick with the mystic weapons, and there's nothing wrong with that. You do you. I've even seen some fic authors write Leo using both odachi and twin katana interchangeably. Great!
My issue is with the group of people who seem to think that post-Ninpō, Leo wields TWO ODACHI.
I was reading a fic yesterday where one commenter (we'll call them OP) 'informs' the author that Leo uses twin odachi post-Ninpo, not katana.
Someone else replied, saying something along the lines of "I thought the garden trowels turn into twin katana. They're different from what I remember."
Then OP responded to the reply like "Nah, it's odachis. Imagine how strong Leo must be to wield two at once!"
And that, as they say, was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.
WHERE DID THIS IDEA COME FROM? Denial? Glorification of Rise? Misinformation? Something else? All of the above?
Odachi and katana are very different swords from appearance alone. You don't need knowledge of martial arts to know this.
Still in denial? Here's the proof.
Katana have thinner blades and wide hilts. Odachi are much bigger and heavier, and in the show clearly have a wider and longer blade.

IRL comparison. The odachi is bigger and longer than the tachi (the smallest sword in the 1st pic) and the katana is smaller/shorter than the tachi.

This size/length difference remains true in the show. The odachi is almost as big as Leo at his full height while his twin katana only take up roughly the vertical length of his shell. There are some inconsistencies because the show has too much going on to really focus on sword length, but still.
If you're still not convinced, then let's talk animator logic. Except Donnie, all the turtles use their OG weapons in the beginning of the pilot episode. The katana in Leo's hands are basically identical to the katana he wields post-Ninpō.
The way the two swords are drawn in the show are also visually different.

Just from a logical standpoint, it's obvious that Leo would not be using two odachi. We've seen him wield his odachi with one hand so it's entirely possible that he's capable of using two at once, but even so it's hardly practical and even just plain inefficient, especially when you take into account his sword-throwing teleportation move. It doesn't matter that Leo could do it. Two giant, heavy swords are just cumbersome and impractical for a fighter who relies on speed and mobility.
Headcanons that glorify Rise are one thing. The "bio-engineered soldiers of war" headcanon is fanon because there are many uncertain factors so who's to say it can't be canon. However, spreading very blatant misinformation of canon, like this debacle with Leo's swords, is not okay.
TL;DR: Rise Leo uses one (1) mystical odachi for most of the series but uses twin katana after unlocking Ninpō.
If you still can't see it, then you are — to put it harshly — either blind or stupid, neither of which are mutually exclusive.
Thank you for listening to (reading) my TED Talk.

Rise Ponderings: Restraint
A continuation of this post, and inspired by @pillowdrawz's art.
With everyone in Rise's universe being a little more durable than they should be, I'd imagine that mutants and yokai are even more so.
The turtles have always gone all out in fights, both because they don't know any better and because their rogue gallery is always as physically powerful and durable as them (the Purple Dragons and Stockboy being the exceptions) so they have no reason to hold back. We often say that Rise's villains are jokes, but like? The rogues can endure Donnie's tech (mystic is still on the fence as we've never seen him directly use it on any rogues), Mikey's fire chains, Leo's sword slashes and Raph's powerful punches. Heavy impact, first-degree burns, deep cuts, painful punches. Those things HURT when you're on the receiving end. Yet, the rogues seem to bounce back very quickly.
Thanks to cartoon logic plus their villains' enhanced durability, the Rise turtles have never actually killed someone (cmiiw). Well, besides Warren Stone but he's a technicality due to his regeneration abilities.
And that's not even mentioning their major villains, the Shredder and the Kraang, who are even more powerful than our beloved bio-engineered weapons of war. In those scenarios, even their all wasn't enough to stop them.
Rise is the only series where the turtles never actually defeat their major villains on their own. One was defeated with help from their ancestors and the other was locked away (again). Their villains are THAT POWERFUL.
Could you imagine the ramifications of Rise assuming the other universes run by a similar logic? Like, they don't realise just how overpowered their home universe is in general. They think the other universes' villains are like Rise's so they treat them the same way. The other turtles' stories about their villains DO NOT help.
Going all out, guns blazing (in Donnie's case, literally) on every villain they encounter in the other universes because that's their norm. The villains who in those universes are arguably far more mortal than theirs.
That's a bloodbath waiting to happen.
I wonder how the Rise turtles would feel knowing they have actual blood on their hands?

Rise Ponderings: Durability
Has anyone noticed that everyone in the Rise universe is surprisingly durable? Call it cartoon logic because a lot of Rise defies modern physics, but even then, they don't really get hurt.
Maybe that's why the Kraang was so devastating. In a world where everyone is a little more durable than normal, what monsters the Kraang must be to be able kill the entire world population (yokai, mutants, and humans alike) in a matter of a few years.

You know, I envy those of you who live in US. This season of D20 is making me really want to get a Dropout subscription but I can't because US dollar is approx 4 times my country's currency.
CMIIW, the annual Dropout fee is $59.99. That's $5.99 per month, which sounds pretty affordable for at least middle-class folk (cmiiw).
Yet given my circumstances, as much as I want to, I cannot afford to pay 260+ annually for a streaming site that I won't use everyday. Inflation here is crazy so that's a week's worth of groceries.
In fact, there's a lot of amazing subscriptions that I want to try but again, they're paid in US dollar so whatever you pay for a month, I'm paying x4 that amount. It's a lot. I'm genuinely devastated.
Anyway, anxiously waiting to see what happens next to our intrepid heroes and what 'Once Upon A Time' entails. Still waiting for Ep. 4 best moments on Youtube.

Spirits above, the Winx Club idea though.
Every time I rewatch the Nickelodeon clip of the turtles unlocking their Ninpō, my brain incessantly screams "MAGICAL GIRL TRANSFORMATION".
The idea of the turtles having a Winx/magical girl-esque transformation haunts me. I like to imagine they would incorporate their weapons and Ninpō into the transformation sequence, while the beginning notes and the chorus of Seventeen's Hitorijanai plays in the background in place of the Winx songs to tie into the Hamato Clan's motto.
I have a very elaborate animatic (transitions and everything!) playing out in my head right now and it is at times like this that I truly lament my utter inability to draw.
Many things have popped in my head today in regards to ROTTMNT ideas for AUs of which I feel the need to share simply because I want to.
1. I imagined a ROTTMNT x Winx Crossover AU and I just found it as one of the funniest things I have ever imagined. I don't know what would be sillier, the turtles having Winx transformations (I REALLY WANNA DRAW THAT (and while I know guys don't have transformations I find the concept of them having one as too good to pass up)) or them simply just being transported there and proceed to cause chaos with their mystic mojo.
2. I also imagined a ROTTMNT x Psychonauts Crossover AU which is fascinating in it's own right. The psychic shenanigans they'd get up to OMG. If they were from that world originally and their ninpo was a sort of passed down psychic power it would be quite interesting. I imagine when they are found out after a mission to check the strange activity that went on in New York due to constant tips, the agents would be very weary of them due to the whole Grulovia thing. If they have been transported there however, it would be funny to just have them end up at either Whispering Rock or the Middle of the Mother Lobe (or the surrounding area). Everyone would freak out because "OMG THEY ARE GIANT TURTLES" and they'd be like "Chill, we aren't gonna hurt ya, we just need to get back to our own dimension because of mystic hijinks" leaving everyone even more confused.
And
3. ROTTMNT characters dancing the Waltz or Ballet (mainly Donnie and Leo), simply because I was listening to Waltzes and think it would be neat to see them do that.
Welp, that's the end to my lil drabble. Enjoy!

Story Prompt: Rise Dark Gods AU w/ a side of TMNT mega-crossover
Summary:
Participants, the Bale welcomes you. Only one can reign supreme in the Battle Nexus. Will it be you?
In a world where everyone is either immortal or a god, life and death means very little. Nobody's had a good grasp of the sacrality of life in at least five millenia.
To a society that cannot die, certain death is fascinating. It is why Lady Octavia's Battle Nexus is so widely celebrated; her team does a phenomenal job of creating the illusion of certain death. Yet an illusion can only sate their obsession for so long. The surge of offerings at Leo's temples is a sign that people have gotten bored.
Perhaps it is time for the Battle Nexus to go multi-dimensional. Surely, the people will enjoy seeing alternate versions of their princes battle to true death.
⚠️TW: suidical undertones, blood, gore, graphic depictions of violence, MCD (but kudos to you if you somehow manage to get around it)
Themes:
Reckless endangerment in the first degree - Beings of power blatantly disregarding the preciousness of life, either because they do not care or do not understand it. Either way, life is meaningless to someone who can live forever.
Hints of classism - Beings of power using the lower class for their own entertainment. The Battle Nexus exemplifies this in its mirroring of the gladiator fights of Ancient Rome. The noble and powerful (gods, immortals, yokai) place bets and spectate the event from comfortable seats high above whilst the gladiators (mortals, in the case), typically slaves or of a lesser background, battle to the death for a prize/the title of champion.
-
The idea is that several TMNT iterations of your choosing are summoned to play a twisted, deadly version of the Lair Games in this Dark Rise AU's Battle Nexus. Their opponents are both each other and this AU's Rise boys, who control the arena and created the games being played. There are six rounds: one round against a space made by each brother, a fight amongst the players, and a final battle with the four gods in the flesh.
The space created by each brother reflects the domain they govern. Raph's round, for example, might involve facing childhood fears because he is the Patron of Childhood. Similarly, Leo being the Patron of Games and manipulative bastard that he is, would have his round be 4D chess, with him (White) as the opponent and the players (Black) as living pieces. Like the chess game from Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone except they actually die.
