I was recently asked what I’m doing and I promptly responded, “nothing.” The Italians have described my life aspirations best, Il dolce far niente - the sweetness of doing nothing - and now I spend each day finding the best way to do nothing. As rivers go in Kenya, the name Ewaso Nyiro is a little confusing. Not because Ewaso Nyiro translates to brown river (in Masai) and almost all the rivers in Kenya are brown but because there are two totally different rivers with the same name.

The young men from the Samburu tribe of Kenya have an unorthodox virility contest. They compete to see who can jump the highest from a stationary position.

On a recent hike up Mount Ololokwe, our guide Paul Kominga was also a Moran from the Samburu tribe. While watching the sunset from the mountain, Paul gave us an impromptu jumping show.

Down in Olkoromaritian, the Ewaso Nyiro river lazily meanders on her way to Lake Natron. Like an avenue of water, the shores are lined with fig trees on either side under which camping is a welcome reprieve from the +35°C temperatures. I spent my weekend floating on a rubber tube, drinking beer and doing fuck-all as monkeys darted across the fig trees and the sun arced over the horizon.
