Kurt’s eyes were bright on his dimly-lit face, wary and bewildered like those of a deer in the woods immobilized by a sudden shot. He remained motionless for a few seconds too long, and Jeanne realized with a sinking heart that she had just crossed a line; an invisible boundary beyond which neither of them had ever dared to go in all the years they spent together. She understood now that Kurt didn’t know what to do. Jeanne thought she knew what she wanted, but couldn’t feel, couldn’t know for certain.

  Maybe I’m just troubling him? Perhaps he thinks I’m just a spoiled noblewoman playing with her guard? That it doesn’t mean anything?

After a long, stilted moment, Jeanne let him go and turned towards the staircase. “It’s getting late, perhaps we should return before the cutthroats come out in earnest.”

Kurt stood up, coughed, straightened his sword belt, and followed her without a word.
