Learning to discriminate less in regards to where plants come from. I often get called a plant racist. Indigenous, native, local, exotic—these terms complicate nature. There’s beauty and aesthetic purpose in most plants, even if their wild ancestors came from 3 or 3,000km away. 🌳 West Australian Red Flowering Gum - Corymbia ficifolia. 🌳 Mountain Ash - Eucalyptus Regnans. 🌳 🌳 🌳 #seeds #nativeplants #indigenousplants #exotic #local #eucalyptus #eucalyptusregnans #corymbiaficifolia (at Cape Schanck) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj8-eqTBzu0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s nice to see 0.01% of biodiversity managing to live with the human concept of fencing. 🌳 🌳 🌳 “The moment settlers put up fences they excluded themselves from 99.99% of the world’s biodiversity.” 🌳 🌳 🌳 #echidna #native #wildlife #fences #biodiversity #settlermentality #reforest #trees #plants #shrubs #grasses https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj1GUhCBoNR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It's time to ask the birds for help! I'm donating a few Fairy Wren prints to sweeten the deal when you pledge to help our local farmers raise funds for a new Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program on the farm @barragunda. I live on this farm, these guys (and birds) are my friends, this is my home and the fairy wrens are inextricably linked to this Southern Mornington Peninsula landscape. I can't express deeply enough how important it is to steer away from the current mass-agricultural models that are destroying the planet's biodiversity. 🌳 Support @morningpennifarm and @regenerating_farms to meet their goals here at the farm. Manjal Jimalji — Devil’s Thumb trail. 🌳 Usually a cloud forest but a clear day gave me a great appreciation for this landscape. Signs of original occupation the whole way up tells the story of fire creation for the Eastern Yalanji people. A little illustration of a peyote from 8 years ago has been resurrected by the tattoo artist @imbusy666 — Recently inked on @idratherbegardening — — — #Peyote #cactus was ingested by the #Aztecs for it's #psychoactive properties. It has been used for #spiritual purposes for over 5,000 years. It is said to be the plant that enabled the #Aztec #warriors to fight as they did. This is why planting native trees is so important. From seed these plants are two years old. They’ve been in the ground here for 6 months and already the soil health is improving and the preference of undergrowth grasses for the native animals, like the female eastern grey kangaroos here, is evident. These local trees—blackwood, she oak, saltbush, eucalyptus and banksia species are already providing shade, food and companionship for large mainland mammals/marsupials. Plant native trees and somehow native soil biology reappears, and so do native grasses and other ground-cover plants that have attempted to reappear for the past 200 years but have been suppressed by poor land management. It’s really easy to bring back biodiversity to biologically-degraded areas, you just have to be willing. 🦘 🦘 🦘 #native #plants #trees #reforest #reforestaustralia #reforestation #kangaroo #easterngreykangaroo #blackwood #plants #eucalyptus #sheoak #saltbush https://www.instagram.com/p/CeTNCRilU8Z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ink is finished on the koala. Just have to spend a few days colouring it now. — If you didn’t know, koalas have recently been declared an endangered species by many Australian states. No recovery plan for the Australian marsupial is in place despite it being identified as a requirement nine years ago. — Australian governments, land developers and real estate magnates continue to destroy koala habitat every single day of the week. The solution is simple—reduce human populations and the koala population Increases. 🐨 🐨 🐨 #koala #ink #blackandwhite #sketch #illustration #penandink #banksia #leaves #blacklines (at Mornington Peninsula National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeOOrKWl1j0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🐨 The toughest part of this drawing is done, I think. It’s just banksia flowers, branches and leaves from here on in. 🐨 🐨 🐨 #koala #ink #sketch #illustration #penandink #banksia #leaves #blacklines (at Mornington Peninsula National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdhD3LNh9r-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Been staring at these reference photos for too long. What keeps running through my head (as well as the decline of koala populations to the point that your children might live through their extinction) is that I’ve never seen an illustration of a koala that I thought represented it without looking like a caricature or an anime character. A hard face to replicate. — I’m open to suggestions though, even William Cooper couldn’t get them quite right. — — #koala #extinction #illustration #photography #wildlife #populationmatters (at Greens Bush) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcIQ1fNBmLP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I’ve been bushwalking here almost every week for the past three years and have not known about this place until today. Long Point in Greens Bush is an aboriginal camp. I had read there was a place once called “Blacks Camp” at the head of Burrabong creek and that it had “great archeological potential with a fine example of a camp kitchen.” That’s it? That’s it! That’s all the information I could find about what might be the most culturally important place on the Mornington Peninsula. — The local Bunurong people certainly lived here, they certainly cooked here, they drink from the converging creeks, feasting on kangaroos that were in abundance around the grassy hills here. They carried shellfish here from the two nearby coasts. They built their homes, their shelters, and food stores from trees in this forest. They set fire to trees and grasses here with seasonal knowledge that spanned generations. They weaved their baskets from the grass trees and basket rush here, they carved their spears from casuarina trees here. They did all this. Yet, no “official” land title exists for the Bunurong people. — — #bunurong #country #trees #campkitchen #firesticks #fire #eucalyptus #bush #greensbush #firstnations #morningtonpeninsula https://www.instagram.com/p/CbCKRnRh79r/?utm_medium=tumblr

Everyone prepares for the end of civilisation differently. For me it’s to become a seed bank of plants we’re losing faster than I can plant them. — — — SOWING THE SEED by Wendell Berry. Sowing the seed, my hand is one with the earth. Wanting the seed to grow, my mind is one with the light. Hoeing the crop, my hands are one with the rain. Having cared for the plants, my mind is one with the air. Hungry and trusting, my mind is one with the earth. Eating the fruit, my body is one with the earth. #WendellBerry#theMadFarmer #Poems #agrarian #poetry #nativeseed #seeds #indigenousplants #sowingtheseed https://www.instagram.com/p/CawB8NulDj_/?utm_medium=tumblr

Found some time today to photograph the first of the Paperbark series of drawings. Native Australian birds inked on paperbark from the habitat these birds depend on. ‘Melaleuca swamp’ is the vegetation class and these original illustrations will come with a few seedlings of the Swamp Paperbark (melaleuca ericifolia) that I’ve grown from seeds I’ve collected. — I hope you like this series as it will be the first of my original drawings, besides private commissions, that I’ve ever parted with. — — — #paperbark #illustration #nativeflora #nativeplants #kookaburra #blacklines #swamppaperbark #nature #forest #swamp #drawings #birdsofaustralia (at Cape Schanck) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZeQNOulw_5/?utm_medium=tumblr

Recording new bird species after 3 or 4 months of landscaping & revegetating the area around the farm. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I planted the first tree @barragunda and it seems fitting to enter the first bird I saw on this farm when there was nothing but buffalo grass surrounding the house. Since then biodiversity has increased fourfold. — There is more to come, I’m sure. — Get a copy of your own avian diary through @luludotcom — www.aviandiary.com — — — #aviary #aviandiary #birdwatching #birding #naturalhistory #fairywren #birds #birdsofaustralia #capeschanck #superbfairywren https://www.instagram.com/p/CZRR19AF9F8/?utm_medium=tumblr
