A vigorous and easy to grow deciduous shrub Weigela 'Bristol Ruby' will grow in most moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. The arching stems are covered in late spring and early summer with red-budded tubular flowers, fading to pink, in late spring.

In spite of sleeping poorly last night I managed to make it to today's botanical illustration class. The fern of the day was licorice fern (Polypodium glycyrrhiza), one of my very favorite species! I put a good two hours into that drawing, and it's the best one I've done during this whole class series, I think. I took some artistic liberties with portraying the individual leaflets, but it was great practice at getting little details down.

We spent the last 45 minutes of class with willow, likely Salix scouleriana. I was pretty tired by then, and probably only got about 15 minutes of dedicated drawing on the portrait of one leaf (including smudging it entirely too much with the eraser multiple times). Still, it was a fun study of the veining.

Next week is the last class; I'm sad it's ending, but I can take it again in the future and the instructor will have a bunch of different plants each semester.
