Glass Corn

Hello everyone, today is Indigenous People’s Day in the United States! 

The recognition of this day, especially by President Biden (the first president to recognize it) contributes to an effort to correct centuries of white washing American history. It celebrates the Indigenous people who were here and thriving in hundreds of different cultures before white Europeans stepped foot on this land. It celebrates the longevity and perseverance of Indigenous people in not only surviving horrific attacks but maintaining their cultures and sense of identity. 

Indigenous People’s Day was first suggested to the United Nations by Indigenous people in 1977 but it would take many years for this idea to take hold. Today only a handful of states and slightly more cities recognize Indigenous People’s Day in favor of Columbus Day, which remains a Federal holiday. 

Today’s prompt, glass corn, refers to a specific strain of corn produced by a Cherokee man in Oklahoma named Carl Barnes who bred the rainbow looking corn from strains of traditional seed corn from various tribes. It’s a fascinating story that partially represents what today is about: celebrating the traditional while paving a way for the future. 

Obviously this particular story doesn’t take place in the Grimm’s corner of the US and it might be a difficult prompt to write about but we ( @curls-cat and myself) didn’t want to pass today without saying something.

Native Grass Seedling ID Guide - (Part 1) Cool Season Grasses: Weeping grass. Microlaena stipoides seedlings are medium sized and start with a rounded tip.
