Come As You Are - Ch. 1
loneliness, the price I pay for love
Piper’s grandfather, grandmother, and all their ancestors who had lived on this land before them were buried there, in a family graveyard a hundred yards from the house. The shade granted to them by a mature elm tree provided a smidgen of solace from the rising daily temperatures. Kneeling at her grandfather’s grave, Piper wiped off the face of the grave marker bearing his name with a rag and a bowl of water she had brought from the house. She had not visited this site ever since shortly after his funeral and its neglect was evident in the crusted dirt and overgrown grass covering the edges of the flat marker. She could remember times as a young child where she would sneak out in the evenings and trace the etchings of the gravestones, feeling the rough granite under her fingertips as they traversed around names and dates she had not yet been capable of reading. Her father had not been keen about the habit but her grandfather held no qualms about it. Grandpa Tom had told her that it was good practice to spend time with their ancestors, he encouraged her to speak to them, to narrate about her life and how the world was.

For a moment, when dinner ends, Silena is sure it hasn’t worked, because Clarisse has stood up from the Ares table and been so quick to leave that she was sure she wouldn’t catch her. It fits that a warrior would be swift-footed, she guesses as she tries to sprint after her. Eventually, Silena catches her, reaching out a hand to grab around her arm. Clarisse makes a movement and groans, ready to shake her away until her brown eyes lay on her. For a second, Silena’s lovesick brain is sure that the girl’s eyes have lit up with the sight of her, but she pushes the thought away. She has a (self-imposed) quest and she is determined to succeed.
“Hey! Hey, uh, didn’t see you there, sorry,” Clarisse starts to ramble, as if doing damage control for mistaking her for someone else. Silena doesn’t dare to entertain the idea that maybe she’s just nervous around her. “Everything alright? Needed anything?”
Aphrodite, please…
“What’s the hurry for? Aren’t you staying for the bonfire?”
Clarisse looks around at both sides as if she was a cartoon character, and Silena just doesn’t get how there can be so few people at camp that see her as adorable.
“You want me to?”

“You came!” Chris exclaims once he reaches her side.
“Yeah.” She shrugs. “I only did it for him, you know?” As she speaks, she points to the 10-year-old boy, who at least seems to be having fun. “I know where I’m not wanted.”
Chris rolls his eyes at that.
“Bullshit! You’re plenty of wanted,” he says as he tries to smile.
Clarisse doesn’t reply, but holds his eyes for as long as possible, wordlessly asking him if he really believes that. “I wanted to see you!” Clarisse is about to tell him something about how she appreciates the sentiment but doesn’t need him to lie to make her feel better, when Chris grabs her by the shoulder and pushes her close to him.
“And I’m not the only one. Silena has been saving you a seat."
