Unfortunately I had to take a break last week due to health reasons. It's been a while since I sat and worked on a concept sketch, but this image had been going round and around in my head for a while now and demanded to be drawn. This sketch was inspired while looking through the baby bestiary volume 2 by Rudy Siswanto. When I came across the satyr image, an idea for a new painting popped into my head as clear as day. A few weeks ago I was taken off furlough, and had to put my painting projects on hold as I rebalanced my schedule. This weekend however, I was able to squeeze in some time to pick an abandoned project up, painting a friend's Blood Rage miniatures. In particular, I was able to finish the Troll mini, and completed the base colours on the Fire Giant. I have been debating all week what I should share as this week's status, or if I should even post at all with the current events. But a new habit I have developed seemed appropriate to share. I have wanted to do figure drawing for years, but never had an opportunity to. Last week, I decided to take the initiative and looked for online figure drawing classes, and discovered #figuary, a 28 day figure drawing challenge. After watching the first day of their 2019 videos and the companion @croquiscafe video, I decided that I would begin each work day with a life drawing session, using the miniature sketch books I had made as an extra challenge to improve my skills. One thing I have enjoyed seeing is the diversity of the models used, and it got me thinking. From the models we use, to the people who make our supplies, to the people who sell our art or the artists themselves, the art world is full of people of different race, gender, size and sexuality. The people involved in making the art we enjoy is as varied as the art itself, each with its own merit, and each equally as deserving of recognition in the world, a world which would be so much less vibrant, and beautiful if that variety was not encouraged. Support your artists, and support diversity in the art world. Another painting complete, another happy client. I had originally been commissioned to paint a Damascus sword, with engravings down the fuller, with full reign for creativity I settled on replicas of a viking sword excavated in Finland for the inspiration for the blade design. I deliberated about the best way to present the sword, and made the decision to create a scene around it which I knew the client (who is a close friend) would appreciate. This painting presented many firsts and had some interesting challenges, but I am pleased with how the final piece has emerged.
