A note with some attached photocopies held together by a paperclip is handed to Quix during his next visit to the library by one of the librarians as he goes to pass the front desk. The pages are well annotated, with some lines highlighted.

Quix - Hope you are well. I was doing some research on weapon usage pre-explosives and went down a bit of a rabbit hole on the bow and arrow just due to its pervasiveness throughout the world. Over 60,000 years old and, while less so maybe in a combat sense, still well loved and practiced today which is pretty impressive. Anyway, you are one of the few who seem to at least humor my historical prattle, and I know you have an affinity for archery, so I hope you can appreciate some of my recent findings. I am sure you are more than practiced in contemporary techniques, but perhaps some forgotten tips from times past might be of some minor interest to you? Take a look if you want; I also included some of the titles and their classification numbers if you actually feel compelled to read more for yourself.

Did not sleep well last night. No surprise. But have woken up to see the next day this morning- much to my begrudgement.

Quix crushed my tickets out. Hate that asshole. Hate that he was right even more. Doesn't matter. Suppose it would be remiss of me to miss in witness of what H has coming to him.

What does he even care anyway. For such a recluse he sure loves inserting himself into everyone else's business. Don't you have enough to worry about with students your own age? Fuck Q. Fuck H. Fuck Umbral. Fuck this stupid house and its paper thin half ply walls.

Whatever. My head still hurts. I am having 3 Cokes for breakfast and fixing the locks. Again.

Does you have a favorite sport or anything you like to do? Just for physical activity or exercise, not for competing. Unless you like to compete in sports.

"You're correct, I'm not much for competitive sports. At least team sports. So if you're here to recruit, I'd like to decline." He stretches his arms above his head, then rolls his shoulders a bit.

"I can keep up just fine though. I try and get out to run if the weather's nice. But I was quite excited when I heard there was a pool space. I liked swimming at the beach as a kid. Not quite the same in a pool, but being in the water's a nice change of routine outside of classes. Not a lot of students go out there so it's a nice solitude break without judgement, and not to mention is more of a full body immersion. The rush of the water in your ears paired with the constant need for breath doesn't leave a lot of space and time for overthought. Makes it a good mindfulness exercise in that sense too."

Lacerta vivipara. My previous guesses at Claude’s species have been verified by Virgo- the nice redheaded girl at the sanctuary. I was not sure, due to his unusual black scaling, but she was sure to confirm that while he is a common viviparous type he is quite special. Which I knew, of course, but it was nice to hear someone else say it- especially so from a specialist. She told me she keeps care for a lot of the animals around the premises, and there was more wildlife here than I had initially realized in the area. She even helped me set up a tank; it has climbs and hides while resembling his outside environment. It was fun to arrange. Claude seems to enjoy it. Today was a productive day. I wonder if she ever needs help over there.. she could probably use some height.

Thank you again for the birthday wishes. I know we have only been rooming for a few weeks now and we did not get along at the jump, but I am grateful for the (dare I say) camaraderie we have come to. I have not celebrated the occasion much in the past few years and more since it has been acknowledged by someone else, so the consideration no matter how small it may have felt for you did mean a lot to me. Here is to one more year of life I suppose, and I appreciate that if it has to be here it can at least be spent along with you.

📓 [03/03/200x, 09:12] Umbral told me a story about Backup last night. He presented it as extraneous, funny even, but I think it had a bigger impact on him than he initially led on. I cannot say I knew Backup all that well personally, but his reputation continues to speak volumes past his severance with the house and it does not speak of kindness or nobility. Cruelty, usually, is what is associated with his actions, and I do not imagine it was really all that different behind closed doors. But, I suppose there could be room for some incongruity. Umbral seemed dismissive (disappointed? confused?) when I did not find the humor or merit in the memory shared. It is worrying to think how much he endured even outside of that singular event to make what he said seem normalized or justified. Perhaps I am looking too deep into the pit that is my roommate’s motivations, but still this does shine a lick of light down the well. I would hope then, with this forced time now separated, he is able to find praise outside of that cycle. Backup deserves retribution for the pain he has inflicted unnecessarily. More importantly though, Umbral deserves real love.

"Honestly, I was mostly expecting empty office or storage space. Perhaps it's less seen as ominous as it is unremarkable," he mutters, giving a last gleam down the rest of the hall and noting a nearby room code to be archived for later perusing. Or even hiding out of his own, if the area is as less foot trafficked as it is now. “I can appreciate the lengths you’ve gone for some solitude. Seems to be both in scarse commodity and in sickening excess.”

Saturn follows then in turning back from just a few steps behind. Quietly as they return, he continues to wonder of his own significance to the house. In how he may differ from the names on that list, he comes up with only petty circumstance over any besting of wits or potential.

Clearly the venture took a turn from his original direction, though he could not have expected where it would go anyway. There is still more to unearth too. A scratch on an itch of curiosity but the desire to dig out the dirt still present.

"Next time," the brunet repeats in agreement.

They seamlessly mesh back in with the small trickle of students heading back to their classes. One or two adults walk past with purpose in their glares to supposedly find culprits. As he watches the ground leading back to the linguistics class he tries not to think of the names. Instead he thinks of Spartan soldiers, and considers if their childhoods training as child fodder for the glory of their land felt similar. It was all they knew.

A dull day in class, but Yoriko seldom focuses too much attention on it. She must have an excuse for keeping her grades low, and often times it is not intentional that the excuse is watching others with a near obsessive anxiety.

It is only natural, she tells herself, since they are so often getting themselves into harm's way and if it were not for their quiet, twitching observation then the danger would not be realised until later.

That is to say, although they quite like languages, their eyes are still drifting about the place from the back of the classroom watching familiar heads when their eyes lock onto another and, for a moment, they still.

There is no ploy at play, nor self-righteous act around his offer. When seeing earnest intentions in others Saturn tends to reciprocate in honest dealings. And while self-preservation may be of high priority, finding and revealing truths involved in greater matters treads a bit higher- especially considering he and those he has grown to care about are still apart of that community.

He half smiles a bit and nods, considering shortly then of the others in question. To ask aloud felt unwise for the time being, but the possibility of hearing from some other perspectives inside is further engaging in desire to go forward. There is something to collecting told history as well as written, and holding that spoken memory in the folds of a personal library locked in synapse. What better way to store of information than so personally within.

A brow raises then at the mention of the tower, their glaze whispering more than was verbalized.

“Rats huh? Guess it can’t be helped, especially with how old this building is.
