I am pleased to announce the Town of Saugus has been awarded a $884,883 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA)’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program to fund the hire and training of five new firefighters. This federal grant award, which was announced by Congressman Seth Moulton’s office on Friday, September 13, will increase firefighter safety and assist the Saugus Fire Department in better serving and protecting the residents of Saugus by funding the benefits and salaries of five new firefighters for three years. This is the second time under our administration that the Town of Saugus has applied for and been awarded SAFER Grant funding to hire new firefighters. In 2013, the Town identified and applied for assistance to hire additional firefighters. The Town was awarded $1,222,760 to hire eight new firefighters and to fund benefits and salaries for three years. We have maintained and increased those staffing levels since the grant was first awarded in 2013. Public safety has always been a top priority for this administration, and FEMA’s SAFER Grant will further support that goal by securing additional staffing and continuing to prioritize the safety and security of our first responders, and residents and visitors of Saugus. This is a tremendous opportunity and savings for the taxpayers of Saugus. The Town will continue to identify public safety needs as we dedicate additional resources to further address the increasing demands of the community. I am pleased to announce that a series of improvements has recently been made at Stackpole Field in order to improve the Town’s most frequently-used field for Saugus’ youth. // Eleven thousand square feet of sod was recently installed to benefit the many local sports teams that regularly use Stackpole Field to practice or complete in games by providing them with fuller, softer grass, more cushioning, and a reduced chance of injury. In addition, stone dust is being placed around the perimeter of the football field, and maintenance of the baseball diamond is underway. // Thousands of Saugus students and children rely on the use of Stackpole Field each year to practice and play football, lacrosse, field hockey, baseball, and cheerleading. These fields need to be in top condition in order to provide the Town’s young athletes with the best possible playing conditions. // Some of the many benefits of playing on a grass field include: ▪️Stress on joints is reduced by the cushioned and resilient layers of grass and soil; ▪️The traction you get while playing on grass is excellent; ▪️Reduces chance of injury by providing better absorption of impact; ▪️Improved oxygen flow; and ▪️Cooler, cleaner surface with a better appearance. // We are proud to continue to maintain and improve our Town playing fields in order to provide our children and athletes with reliable and safe conditions. I am pleased to announce that a comprehensive, organizational needs and staffing analysis of the Saugus Police Department is underway in order to strengthen the structure and effectiveness within the Department, improve and streamline services to the residents of Saugus, and increase safety within the community. The Town has engaged Municipal Resources, Inc., a Meredith, N.H.-based support services firm, to conduct and complete the in-depth structural review of the department to help plan for the future needs of Saugus residents and to continue to provide the most secure and strategic police services within the community. Our goal has always and will continue to ensure that the Town of Saugus is operating in the most efficient, strategic, and structurally sound method in order to continue to serve the residents and visitors of our community to the best of our abilities. The Board of Selectmen and I are pleased to announce that construction is underway at Evans School Playground in order to build two new, regulation-size basketball courts, restore surrounding sidewalks, curbing, parking, and drainage and implement security cameras and lighting to increase safety and security on the premises. These upgrades are part of an ongoing effort to continue to improve the Town’s parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields for the children and families of Saugus. It is extremely exciting to observe the Evans School Playground groundbreaking and to know that the park’s reconstruction is underway.
