Above. Portrait of Rachel Ruysch by Michiel van Musscher and Rachel Ruysch
🎨Artist profile.
🌷 Rachel Ruysch (RAHG-kehl RAH-eesh)
Country. Netherlands 🇳🇱
Age. Dutch Golden Age.
Style. Rococo. Still life/flower painter 🌺
Born June 3, 1664 The Hague, Netherlands
Death. October 12, 1750 Amsterdam, Netherlands (86)
Ruysch was the daughter if professor Fredrik Ruysch, a scientist, amateur artist, and proud collector of specimens. Her mother was Maria Post, daughter of Peter Post, an architect and sister of Frans Post, landscape artist. She had 12 siblings, her sister, Anna Elizabeth, was also a notable artist (who I will profile). Rachel would spend hours drawing her father’s collection and, noticing his daughter’s talent, Fredrik allowed her to apprentice under Willem van, Aelst, a still life artist, at 15.
By 18 Rachel was supporting herself and hanging out/learning from other still life artists and horticulturist like Agnes Block. She also taint her father and sister Anna to paint.
In 1693 Rachel married portrait artist, Juriaen Pool. After which she continued to paint prolifically, with her husband’s support. (He even painted a family portrait where she’s the main figure). With him she had 10 children, the youngest was born when she was 47. Unfortunately 7 of the children would die in their teens or early adulthood.
Rachel Ruysch was offered membership to the Confrere Pictura where she would’ve been the first female member. In 1701, she and her husband became part of the Hague’s Painters Guild.
1708-16 Ruysch became court painter of prince Johann Wilhelm (who one of her sons were named after) the Elector Palantine of Bavaria in what is now Germany. Unlike most court painters, Rachel wasn’t required to move, which is fortunate because otherwise she wouldn’t have been able to win the lotto. She was super popular and by the end of her life she painted over 250 known paintings. She worked from 15- 85 and was so admired that that poetry was written about her.

Ruysch’s early work consisted usually of the forest floor(above) before moving to bouquets (below)

Studies of art made by pre European art found in Ny. Probably made by Eries and/or Haudenosaunee artists. Some are rock art, some are artifacts.
If anyone has any resources, especially with images on pre Colombian art from ny or anywhere else in the US, I’d love to see it.
Here’s a link to a book you can read, online, for free, called “The Stone Age in North America. Vol 2 of 2. ” by Warren K. Moorland. White some images and info. It has the Elmira Effigy in it. The book was originally published in 1910, digitized in 2024.

Re: your question abt flowers :3
This is the template with traditional kashubian folk flowers I partially used (most of the designs on the drawing weren't mine). These are all artistic representations of common flowers, and a few bugs, like for example the first flower on the left in 6 row is a sunflower
(Kashubians are ethnic minority in poland native to north regions :3)
I see! How interesting!!

Went to my first non-school rally.
🚫👑No Kings Rally,
Fredonia, Chautauqua county, Ny. 6/14/25
I got lost so I couldn’t “March” there with the people I had an rsvp with (I would have been the youngest in the group) but I found the end point so I went there. I think next time I’ll go directly to the park. There were people of all ages but it as still tiny but Chautauqua county is a rural, conservative community so it wasn’t surprising. Also the Fred State (a state university) is on break so it wasn’t surprising mostly locals .
There was only one heckler but nobody reacted to him so he got bored and wandered off.
🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
Here’s some studies I made. I added some color after the fact. I may add more later.
The writing on the first one in just the date.
The writing on the 3rd down on the right says: “Honor those who died for a representative democracy. “
“I take down kings for fun.” “Compassion not oppression. “
The sketch next to that says “FDT”
Bottom right says. “We were all once strangers in this land.”

The thing about being an artist is that, even though there’s schools for it, and I went to one, like any skill; you don’t actually need to go. Artists learn from the world around them. Anything can be art. Anyone can be an artist.
Learn from those around you.
Read about artists, look at art. If your library is still open you may find art books there. Make masters copies, draw random stuff. If you’re sitting at a restaurant, draw the ketchup bottle or the view out the window. Go to workshops if you can find/afford them. (Sometimes they’re free) Go to museums if you can. Doesn’t even have an art museum, art is everywhere.
Experiment with different tools. Anything can be an art tool.
Doodle, you don’t have to draw anything, just make marks.
Talk to other artists.
Support other artists.
Keep trying.
Remember, some guy sold a banana taped to a canvas. Marcel Duchamp, a famous French artist, best known work is a urinal signed R.Mutt. A regular urinal taken off the wall and exhibited at a museum. The chocolate guy is an artist. cut paper shapes are a traditional folk art worldwide.
If you’re disabled you can still be an artist. Sara Biffin had Phocomelia and lacked arms or usable legs and was an accomplished painter in the 17-1800s. Below is a self portrait she painted with her mouth. Not ai voice command, her mouth.
Art can be fun, a devotional act, activism, anything

🦆 Sequana by sja
Gaulish goddess, personification of the river Seine and her source. She was adopted by the Romans after Gaul was conquered and colonized. She was especially worshipped in Northern France. Her primary place of worship being Châtillon-sur-Seine, Burgundy,France. The springs there are still called Fontes Sequanae.
Anything related to water đź’¦ is sacred to her. She is also a healer.
This image is based on a sculpture of her on a duck boat. A study for a future work? Or I’ll make this into a print. Not sure.

Haudenosaunee ? Maybe some Eries. Art.
Owl? Snapping turtle, ruddy duck, sturgeon? Not sure why it holding a head.
I don’t remember where I found them. I thought they were cool because I don’t see Haudenosaunee art much, especially pre colonial. I want to see more so if anyone has any ideas or know where these images are from I’d appreciate it if you’d share.
Thank you.

The ones below are from the McKlurg mansion in Westfield ny.
A hand beaded purse. Top left. Says “Seneca purse made 1840-1850, from wool, glass beads, and cotton lining.
Not sure what the thing with a bear carved on it is,, a club maybe.
Under that on the left is a box/basket with a sun on it.
Not sure what the plates on the right are. I honk they’re made of grass with quill embroidery.
Below left, not sure what the bird box, not sure is made out of. Quills? There’s a tiny basket and a carved canoe with people in it.
The carved staff has somethin to do with Red Jacket/Sa-go-ye-wa-tha, a Seneca leader who convinced the American govt to allow the Seneca to keep some of their land.. The staff had something to do with the Treaty of Big Tree. There’s a picture of Red Jacket n do to it.
