My favorite of the French Polynesian islands I visited was Huahine, a sleepy island that seemed to have escaped the grasps of time. When you're here, it feels like you've entered the Garden of Eden. After a few days of sailing, @lemahanahotel, one of the only two hotels on the island (the other was closed), was the perfect place to recharge and indulge in some lovely meals and sunsets. Having had the privilege to visit and photography many, many countries, I no longer have the desire to travel to EVERY country on Earth like I once had. Instead, it's all about getting under the skin of certain special places and revisit the destinations I already know and love. Enter: French Polynesia. I recently had the chance to visit for the first time and photograph the cover story of this month's @hemispheresmag. I was blown away. The people, the culture, the landscape — the sense of adventure that laid on every corner. I was inspired by the "circle of life" connection every living thing had with the special land that they inhabited ("Consider the coconut!"). Thank you, as always, @christoshannides, @ellencarpenter11 and Mark Mantegna for this special assignment that fired up all my senses. Influenced by ancient Islamic architecture, I. M. Pei's Museum of Islamic Art yet has a uniquely modern design involving geometric patterns. At age 91, Pei was coaxed out of retirement by Qatar's then-Emir, Sheikh Hamad, to undertake this enterprise. Pei traveled throughout the Muslim world for 6 months to draw inspiration for his final project. Earlier this summer, I got to cruise around Lake Como, meandering through small ancient towns, negotiating hairpin turns to the tops of mountains, all the while on a steady diet of espresso and gelato every hour on the hour (thanks, @ale__bianco!).
