the post about the seasons has me thinking-- are there different hemispheres in blest? is winter in ygrath equivalent to summer in like, conte?
There are hemispheres in Blest, but the entirety of the Continent and its surrounding lands take place in the northern hemisphere! Once you cross the Myrros Sea, the Nysos Sea, and then the Dyer Oth to reach the southern landmass, you would be crossing the "equator" into the southern hemisphere. So while winter in Conte looks extremely different to winter in Haven, where the weather is still warm, bright, and sunny, it still shares a common hemisphere so the seasons aren't actually reversed, they're just different because of the different biomes and regions!

Random Fact of the Day: Rush and Looney Tunes have a connection. You might be wonder thinking, what's the connection between Rush and Looney Tunes?  It has something to do with "La Villa Strangiato" which is off their 1978 Hemispheres. When pdbass connected the two, it blew my mind.  Around the six minute mark of "La Villa Strangiato," that's when the piece starts.  That section is taken from, pianist, Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse, written in 1937.  It was adapted and arranged by Carl Stalling.  "Powerhouse" has two parts.  The second section has been used in various Warner Bros. cartoons, "Ren & Stimpy," and others. Rush was sued for using it, but that statute of limitations had run out and nothing could be done.  They didn't owe him anything.  Upon Rush realizing what they did, they did what they thought was right and wrote him a penance cheque for using his melody. pdbass goes on to breakdown musical aspect of what Rush played.  Fascinating.  This is something I didn't know.  Goes to show that you're always learning something new. Wow.  Just wow.

do vuo and specky have character and stand info somewhere? kinda curious
[ To preface: while Specchio Mediano is my OC, Vuotela Trenne was moreso created between myself and my partner! In the future, I may lay out a more filled-out profile for Vuo... but for now, let's talk Specchio. ]
Tumblr media
Lots of reading under the cut! But here's a little character sheet. :)
Specchio Mediano...
Is not your typical gangster - sure, most folks would make that claim... but seriously, he does not belong in this line of work. Specchio is a timid, anxiety-ridden young man who rarely comes out of his shell. The only driving force behind him is that of his loyalty and dedication to those he considers his found family - the members of Squadra Guardie del corpo, or Team Bucciarati. Though he does end up opening up thanks to the antics of his more outgoing teammates - namely Guido Mista or Narancia Ghirga - he would mostly keep to himself and only really acknowledge the presence of their leader, Bruno Bucciarati.
Unbeknownst to anyone besides Specchio himself at the time, he and Bucciarati had a shared history - a brief encounter shared on the night Specchio lost both of his parents to an arson attack instigated by infighting amongst low-ranking Passione soldati. The way the wall before him opened up as if it were merely curtains being parted was an image he couldn't scrub from his head from the longest time. And when he paid off a private investigator to locate the one who saved his life when he was so young, he was directed to the now-capo of the Napoli territory.
The reason Specchio was so determined to find this man was because it was his first and only encounter with another stand user for the longest time. He had spent his adolescence afflicted with the mysterious power of his own stand without anyone to help him understand it, as the aura of his untamed ability made him difficult to approach by non-stand users. After clawing his way out of this unsociable and unhappy childhood, he took it upon himself to find someone who could explain this power to him... and because the only time he had ever seen a power like this was from that fateful night, he knew that whoever had been present there would have the answers.
Thus, he found the capo, and pleaded with him to explain the strange ability. Given that Passione (in this timeline, at least) was more stable, he was more than happy to assist the troubled youth... and once he saw the potential Hemispheres held, he welcomed him onto their team.

... and Hemispheres.
While not a particularly strong stand in physical combat, the passive and active abilities it does hold were beneficial for the illicit side of work. That being, Specchio could shoplift from and infiltrate into practically any area that was uninhabited by stand users - meaning he could get away with it in the general public.
Before properly "taming" Hemispheres, so to speak, only its passive ability was really available to Specchio. It was as if a veil was cast over him - not that he was necessarily invisible, but moreso that he radiated an aura that made him difficult to approach by anyone without a stand. Most eyes didn't look in his direction - which was good for a young boy who didn't want to be found, but also terrible for his interpersonal skills later on down the line.
Once he had gained control over Hemispheres, though, he could now create reflective surfaces at will, which worked like illusions against stand users. He could make missing limbs appear like they were still there by reflecting the body, which was quite helpful when used in tandem with Bucciarati's Sticky Fingers.
And even if its physical prowess was no more than that of the average mafioso, being touched by Hemispheres may leave one disoriented, as it will swap the hemispheres of the brain (or at least, their perception), making one's lefts become their rights, or their ups their downs. It can even make them feel as if Specchio's presence is right behind them - which could be true, if the one standing before you is nothing but a reflection...
But, Hemispheres tactical ability is easily overpowered by anyone skilled in CQC, as it is only physically capable of emerging from Specchio's back, meaning its range is actually quite short. Not only that, but the reflective barriers can be broken.
Hemispheres has two more abilities, such as its "resolve mode" and the ability awoken by the combined presence of Genesis' strings of fate and the gold stand arrow.
... but that isn't part of his base ability.

Additional Character Information:
[History]
Following the attack on Specchio's childhood home, he was left orphaned. Both his mother and father had perished in the fire that he only survived by what he believed to be dumb luck. He was hospitalized for a few weeks of his life, receiving the occasional letters marked with a stamp of an octopus - the only hint he had to the benevolent group paying for both his hospital stay, and reaching out to notify a next-of-kin. Once he had made his full recovery, he was sent to stay with his great-aunt Miele Mattani near the Catanzaro province of Calabria.
Even though this was his imposed "second chance" at life, it was anything but happy. Specchio, at the time, was known to his aunt as Seada Mediano... his birth name. He didn't realize at this very moment who he wanted to be, but he knew the lifestyle that Miele was pushing him towards wasn't one he was ready to accept. Not only that, but he had found himself plagued by strange visions and hallucinations ever since that fateful night that he had lost his parents. When he voiced these concerns, it was often brushed off as a form of trauma related to the incident; but Specchio knew it was something much more, something that felt more tangible.
In his free time, he kept to himself, studying any books on human psychology and physiology he could get his hands on. If no one would tell him what he was dealing with, he'd try to find it himself. It was around the age of fourteen that he found at least one answer - but not the one he was looking for: instead, he found himself. This, of course, did not go over well with his aunt given that she was more of a pious and by-the-book elder, so to speak. The misery in his life only grew given he was essentially caged, struggling with interpersonal relationships and feeling held back by the family he was forced into.
So he escaped. At the age of sixteen, Saeda Mediano was declared missing by Miele Mattani in the fall of 1998. But Saeda wasn't who Miele or the authorities should've been looking for.
That boy was Specchio, now.

[Modern Specchio]
Specchio, while independent now, had struggled to truly find his footing in society. Being homeless at his age wasn't the most ideal thing, but it was around this time Specchio found benefit in this mysterious aura lying in wait within him. Due to whatever ability this was, he had an easy time getting around most security, creating a penchant to shoplift whatever he needed, and sleep wherever he so desired. It was as if a veil was cast over him... and despite how this had always affected his socializing - he thankfully never needed to be social, he just needed to survive.
The boy was mature enough to understand that he still needed to learn, so he hung around universities in his travels and snuck into the back of classes in order to "attend" and listen in on lectures, which helped him to develop a fondness for things such as history and art. But the answers he sought were all the way back home in Napoli: he still needed to understand this ability, and part of him believed that going back to the place where this all began would provide. Regardless, he couldn't do this alone, and once he was close enough to home he attempted befriending local students by offering to steal alcohol for them (which was quite a hit!).
But this was the beginning of his downfall, as his first exposure to truly interacting with others created a level of fear in him - an anxiety that he barely had any control over. While getting to know the city life and even some of the more illicit undergounds - such as where he was able to get a tattoo and even some affirming care while circumventing the legal aspects of doing so - Specchio had made one unfortunate error. That was, putting his trust into the hands of friendships purchased by stolen goods... particularly, alcohol.
The night he made the attempt to return to the grounds of his former home, everyone was rather drunk, which only heightened tensions. His associates were playing around, roughhousing and the sorts, as a very tense Specchio attempted to approach what remained. Everything was already a blur to him, so when he caught a glimpse of flickering flames once again in an atmosphere already wrought with awful memories, something snapped. When he came to, he found that one of his mates was simply offering him a smoke to ease his nerves - but that same boy was now beaten, cowering on the ground. These weren't the answers he needed at all, but it did give him a confirmation: the blood wasn't on his hands, but rather, something that had emerged from him. When he looked around to try and find the others, he could only see his own reflection.
This mysterious ability had gone out of control.
The desperation Specchio felt upon realizing that this ability could be uncontrollably violent put him on his last leg. He used the remaining amount of savings he had to pay off a private investigator in order to find the identities of anyone who was present the night of that fire, knowing that he would be able to find the holder of the only other stand ability he had witnessed to that day: a zipper that had appeared on the walls of the building, opening an escape for him to crawl out from.
