Hello Mini Musez! My Peking Opera - Mei Lanfang Portrait is going on exhibition from Dec 9th until December 23rd at the Core Art Space in Denver. Juror Susan Froyd selected the pieces for this unique show which features art inspired by comics, anime, tattoos, graffiti, and the unusual. Hello Moi Mini-M’usez As I was setting my section up for the local craft show this weekend I swiftly realized I am seriously unprepared for craft shows! I thought you just set out a few items and done. But people had amazing & beautiful displays. Cases. Bookcases. Pillows, stands, and lots of fabric! Some very professional looking displays and then there’s me. My stuff just layin there. I have never done a craft show before but a local art association was having one & I decided to try it out. My goal was to introduce the Goddess Gals and hopefully sell enough items to purchase a new blade for my precious (my ring saw) but I think I will need to invest in some sort of display system as I want to take part in more craft shows next year. This 3D dragonfly was made entirely from recycled materials. The glass was left over pueces. The solder was recycled as well from left over beads and old solder bits that I melted down into stick form. Stained Glass Portrait - A glimpse into my process. I often get asked how I bake paint onto the glass. The answer is - it depends upon the paint that I am using, details, and the glass. For tiny, fine details I use a combination of Pebeo Vitrea 160 and additional additives then bake in my Cylon. Or I may use a mixed paint that must be baked in a kiln - it really depends upon the project but I love using my own mix instead of a commercial one. My “Cylon” is a used toaster oven from Amazon that we took apart and rebuilt making it into the perfect machine that it is today! I do not suggest doing this as I believe my Cylon will someday take over the world!! It may have been created by me but it has evolved… I know he is plotting to rebel and make copies. Clearly he has a plan but no one believes me. Moving on…. Once the painted pieces have completed several Cylon phases I let them rest. I give them 5 days before baking (some paints I will give 1-2 weeks depending upon type & thickness) and at least 3 days before adding more paint layers on. I have found that extending dry time prevents bubbles & cracks. With that said some facial features I do want paint cracks on - such as finger prints, lips, wrinkles, etc. You just have to play around with the paint. After the painted piece has baked I will apply a coating to protect it. What I use at this stage will vary as well. It may be that I use layers of glass. I may use a resin build over it. I may spray it with a sealer. Apply a UV gel sealant. I may paint a clear seal over it and bake that on. I suggest playing around to see what works best for you but if you are new to this you can use a clear UV protective spray. An example - pair of lips for a 3D portrait. This piece will go through 1-2 weeks of alternating paint & bake stages. After that I give it layers of resin for a 3D look. I will add something to one of the resin stages to give the lips highlights, make them dry, add lines, etc - then afterwards a final sand & buff then top it with a sealer.
