This is a portrait of my cat Rex, as a squitten. His new nickname will be T-Rex. Tentacle Rex.
I had fun with this one, although I don’t know how I feel about the fact that the only portrait I have ever painted of my cat Rex is him as a squitten.
Anyways, thanks/ no thanks to my friend/ sudo-brother for this horrible idea. It truly is.

“Horror cannot be spoken because it is alive; because it is silent and is going forward; it drips into the day and it drips into sleep. Sorrow-recalling pain.”
— George Seferis, tr. by Rex Warner, from Selected Poems; “Last Stop,”

"Inspired by a true story, The Terror centers on the British Royal Navy’s perilous voyage into unchartered territory as the crew attempts to discover the Northwest Passage. Faced with treacherous conditions, limited resources, dwindling hope and fear of the unknown, the crew is pushed to the brink of extinction. Frozen, isolated and stuck at the end of the earth, The Terror highlights all that can go wrong when a group of men, desperate to survive, struggle not only with the elements, but with each other." This show is set in the 1800s but even so...Topical maybe? A source of inspiration maybe?

This man and everything he stands for, for me, has been the inspiration behind looking deeper into the early 18th century. Ultimately, I was inspired to explore it in my writing. I am fascinated by identity and personhood, how we define ourselves and how the labels pressed into us shapes us and our thinking.
So how does the absence of a language to describe a way of being affect those who don’t yet exist in the English language? How does the combination wordlessness and the pressures of society affect your understanding of self?
And now, add the unknowable. Alien creatures that live below the water’s surface and that are only sometimes glimpsed. Imagine the horror of having a predator approach you and it has no eyes, no discernible senses and it moves in a way that is alien to you. Stripped of all the rules of the world as you understand it....what next?
Humans grappling with themes and powers well beyond their understand, that smash the structure of their reality? That to me is endlessly fascinating.
