I recently revisited @cafelunette.hfx after some time, and although I was initially dissatisfied with my first visit, this time was very different. I’m not sure if it was time to work out the kinks, or the acquisition of @teymour_adham, but they seriously stepped up their game. The côte de boeuf was sensational and all of their appetizers were on point. Here’s my take on a huevos rancheros. Corn tortillas topped with fried eggs, @pitbossgrills smoked queso, homemade guac, refried beans, salsa two ways, and a lime cilantro crema. I then topped it with crumbled feta and pickled jalapeños. A nice way to elevate any salad is by the addition of fresh cheeses or prosciutto. Stone fruit also add a level of complexity and acidity to help round out the dish. The World of Coke store in @disneysprings is a three story modern space filled with coke products from modern times to gone-bye eras. This space is both retail and museum with items to purchase and lots of information on the history of the brand. The top floor features a @cocacola cafe with a range of Coke based menu items to choose from and it has spectacular views of Disney Springs. The entire space has a sense of nostalgia and American pride. In downtown Bradenton you’ll find @pier22dining, an elegant space that sits right on the waterfront. They have spectacular views and a wonderful ambiance. Their food, however, does not live up to the grandeur of the space. It tastes mass produced and is sloppy. It tastes akin to cruise ship food. They use great ingredients, but due to the volume it’s almost impossible to make it taste fresh and great. My risotto was sloppy, asparagus soft, and the pasta was anything but refined. The sushi had rice that was undercooked and it was mediocre at best. From initial impressions, @xocoffeeshop had lots of potential. They had a nice clean open space, specialty beans, a great espresso machine, and beautiful presented pastries behind glass. Unfortunately, they did not live up to expectations. Their lattes were too hot, so it was impossible to actually taste the beans, and their pastries were all stale and obviously not freshly baked. I was surprisingly disappointed, as I expected great things from everything I initially saw. There isn’t a more iconic Nova Scotian dish than the mighty Donair. This spiced beef dish is served on a warm pita with onions, tomato, and Donair sauce. The sauce is sweet and garlicky, and like nothing else. Halifax has called the donair its official snack since the 1970s. It’s perfect for late night eats or while enjoying the game. Since 1957 @grohmannknives of Pictou have been making handcrafted qualify knives and accessories. They use high quality materials to produce a product that is both durable and functional that last forever. They have everything from Chef’s knives to hunting knives, and everything in between. This is their take on an ulu. These traditional knives have been used by the Inuit community to cut frozen meat, skin caucuses, and help to make clothing. It is a multi function tool that is incredibly versatile, but also represents culture and tradition. Although @grohmannknives missed a couple of key elements true to form, such as sharpening on only one side, it’s still a beautiful tool that’s sturdy and incredibly sharp. The next time you’re in Pictou it’s worth stopping by their factory shop.
