The screech of your rambunctious alarm clock echoed throughout the room. You groaned and rolled into your sheets; the soft cotton tangled around your legs, chaining you to the mattress. Peeling an eye open, you glanced around to find the offending device, spotting it above your head behind you. 8:00AM. More meetings today about the merge between two business. How boring.
You slowly emerged, like the dead, having to rub your eyes countless times to open and greet the sunlight whether you wanted to or not. Realising a heavy sigh, and a scowl, you yanked the alarm clock from the electrical outlet while trying to detangle your limbs.
After you decided what to wear, you headed towards the kitchen to have breakfast and hopefully avoid Jimin. By the time you arrived home last night, Jimin was already in bed and didn't question you about your whereabouts - he never did, since you both didn't talk much these days. It didn't really surprise you. Jimin treated you like a stranger and would always tip-toe himself around you.
When you entered the kitchen, Jimin stood there holding up a sheet of paper and leaning against the kitchen counter. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the top and his tie hung loosely around his collar.
"Morning," he finally spoke, which caught you by surprise. He looked up from the paper he was studying and gave you a small smile.
"Uh, good morning," you said quietly, opening the fridge.
"You were late last night," Jimin said. "Where did you go?"
"Just went to a club that was recently opened," you replied, grabbing a carton of orange juice out of the fridge. "Seokjin's cousin was singing there, so I thought I'd come along to support him."
"We have an engagement announcement with the media next week," Jimin said, letting out a sigh. "Then an engagement party at the end of this month that your father is throwing."
You knew the only reason Jimin wanted to have a conversation with you was because of the engagement and that only. This was the first proper conversation you both had since moving in together. It felt nice to finally speak to him but, you both still had that awkwardness lingering in your voices.
"Listen, I know we don't want this, but we need to make it work," Jimin said, with the sound of irritation in his voice. "At least we can be friends and show that we really want this marriage to the public. We can see other people behind closed doors or whatever."
"You are only saying that because you still want to be with Jiyeon." You groaned, leaning against the kitchen counter and flickering your eyes towards Jimin. "If you get caught, how are you going to get yourself out of it?"
"Maybe if you have ever fallen in love, you would understand." Jimin snapped, crumpling up the sheet of paper that he was holding and throwing it in the trash. "I have no time for this Y/N. I'm leaving."
Jimin exited the kitchen without saying anything else. You knew deep down Jimin resented you because it was your idea to fall in love with someone. You didn't realise how much it would affect him. It felt almost impossible to think about marrying Jimin when you knew both your hearts weren't there for each other.
"I'm sorry for snapping at you this morning," Jimin apologised, leaning back on his chair. "I was annoyed this is finally happening. I thought we had a few years left before our engagement was finalised."
After many hours of meeting between the directors of K.J Group and Park Corporations to discuss future developments and plans, both companies decide to merge. Jimin suggested that you have lunch together to sort out your friendship while also discussing the problem that occurred in the morning.
"It's okay," You nodded, giving him a small smile. "You wouldn't have fallen in love with her if I didn't make that dumb bet two years ago."
"I don't know how to break it to her," Jimin said, opening his bottle of water and took a sip out of it. "I love her, I really do. But this engagement is really killing me inside. I need to break up with Jiyeon."
"I'm sorry," you said sympathetically. Jimin was hurting on the inside, and you finally understood why he was so distant with you: his heart was hurting and he was unsure what to do next. "I can't promise you that it will be easy, but you still have time. We aren't public yet."
"I suppose, but I guess I need to be more careful when we announce everything to the press," Jimin replied, shaking his head.
People noticed Jimin's shift in work attitude. He walked around the office with his head down, not speaking to anyone, especially his friend Hoseok, who was always eager to talk to him. Only Jimin's father was unaware of his son's recent behaviour. He was always too preoccupied for Jimin, especially when he was younger. Jimin's father had been estranged from him since his divorce from Jimin's mother. It was something you both shared: divorced parents and egoist narcissistic fathers who craved power at any cost.
"Can I ask you something?" you asked, changing the subject. "Do you remember anyone named Kim Taehyung?"
"Isn't he not that bright scrawny looking kid that you were friends with in middle school?" Jimin replied, frowning at you in confusion. "Why are you asking?"
It then hit you. You realised why Kim Taehyung's name sounded so familiar. It was the bright kid who was never shy or uncomfortable around others. Taehyung was always pleasant around you and seemed to enjoy his time at school. However, your friendship ended when your father relocated you to a private academy in the heart of the city to be closer to Jimin.
The Taehyung you met recently was nowhere near like the one you used to know. He was so bright and happy as a child, but now something tells you that Taehyung is broken and angry at everyone around him. You could tell from his expressions and mannerisms; he was just rude and didn't care about the way he spoke to people.
"No reason." You lied, giving hims a reassuring smile. "Someone mentioned the name, and it sounded familiar."
"Alright, I have to go and meet the board of directors now. I'll see you tonight," Jimin said suddenly, pushing his chair back and straightening his shirt and tie.
After a long and boring day, you went to Magic Shop, informing Jimin that you wouldn't be home until later, which he probably didn't care about. All you could think about was Taehyung, and you couldn't concentrate on your paperwork or meetings because you were so intrigued by him.
When you finally reached the newly opened club, there stood Taehyung blowing smoke from his cigarette and staring at the moving traffic in front of him. His hair that was once bright blue was now dark brown.
"Taehyung," you said, making Taehyung's eyes snap up at your direction. "I remember you."
"Congratulations, the famous Y/N, remembers me!" Taehyung said sarcastically, dropping his cigarette and stubbing it with his foot. "Aren't you shocked? That kid back in middle school isn't me anymore. He's dead."
"What even happened to you," you asked, inching closer towards him. "You were so happy –"
"People change, kid." Taehyung replied, putting his hands in his pockets and leaned towards the wall of the nightclub. "Everyone has their reasons and secrets. It's whether I want to tell you about bright little Kim Taehyung in middle school."
"You don't need to be rude," you scoffed, folding your arms against your chest.
"Take it this way kid," Taehyung said. "When you have to sing at a shitty club to survive, then we aren't living are we?"
You knew back in middle school Taehyung's family had difficulties with money. He wasn't able to afford brand new uniforms every year or have a decent meal at lunch because his family wasn't able to provide him with a slice of bread. However, despite his financial issues at home, he was able to keep a smile on his face no matter how bad the situation got at home.
"Then why aren't exploring better opportunities? You were always smart at school."
"God, aren't you nosey." Taehyung laughed bitter, biting the bottom of his lip. "Rich people are all the same. They think life is so easy for them just because they have rich fathers who can buy them a company on their twenty-first birthdays."
"What is your problem with me?" You became enraged, irritated by the fact that Taehyung's every word was always rude.
"You are a spoiled rich kid, what else must I say?"
"Do you think I want this?" You shook your head, though you knew it was true. It seemed like everyone knew about who I was because of my father, their success was theirs and not yours.
"Of course you do. You could've said no. Nobody can force you to do things. " Taehyung sneered, turning his whole body around to properly look at you. "Make your own decisions - oh wait, you can't do that because daddy will cut you off and you will have no money. God, imagine being poor. It's not really you isn't it?"
"Your an asshole," you told him, balling your hands into fist. You were getting irritated at Taehyung because it was obvious that he had some kind of resentment towards you.
"True, I may be an asshole but I am telling the truth, whether you life it or not." Taehyung shrugged, digging into his pockets and pulling out a packet of cigarettes. "Let me ask you something kid, what do you want?"
That question was never answered. You were never given the freedom to make your own decisions. Your father probably decided everything for you, which is why your mother divorced your father years ago. Your father had no idea how to be a father, but he insisted on having custody of you because you were his business proposal.
You'd never know if you had the freedom to do whatever you wanted. It was something you had always wanted but struggled with because your dreams and future were handed to you on a silver platter. You desired complete freedom, the ability to freely love someone and do what you desired without someone interfering and controlling you like a puppet.
"I'm not sure," you said quietly, finally responding to Taehyung's question.
"I think you are lost," Taehyung said. "You don't know what you want but you want something."
"What on earth are you talking about?"
"You don't know what to do and where to start," Taehyung explained as he took a cigarette from his box and placed it between his teeth. He lit the cigarette and inhaled and exhaled smoke from his mouth. "You aren't a puppet, you are a person. You need to realise that."
"I already know that," you groaned.
"You need to change your life or you will end up miserable like the rest of us."
"Oh, and how do I go around doing that?"
"You need to take some risks, but stick with me and I can show you the world." Taehyung said. "Do you trust me?"
"I suppose, what else do I have to lose?"

You and Jimin have been living in your new apartment for a week now. You hardly ever spoke to each other and slept in separate rooms. It was as if your friendship had come to an end and you were both strangers. Jimin would work late most nights and then go straight to his room without saying anything.
A thick silence descended on you and Jimin, thicker than the uneasy tension in the air. Uneasy eyes glanced unceremoniously around every time you passed each other, and you both usually tried to avoid catching each other's glances as you walked past each other.
You still had a lot of unpacking to do. There were brown cardboard boxes labelled with a bold black felt-tipped marker scattered around the apartment waiting for you or Jimin to unpack it. However, it was mostly you doing the unpacking while Jimin wandered around you like a ghost, only grabbing what he needed and then walking away.
"Why don't you speak to him?" you friend, Jung Hoseok asked leaning back on the sofa which was the only place that wasn't cluttered with your belongings. "You're his best friend, I don't know why marrying each other would be so awkward."
Jimin introduced you to Hoseok. They worked in Park Corporations together, so they were work colleagues. Hoseok and his family knew almost everyone in town, from small businesses to well-known corporations. His family was well-known accountants who handled many people's finances.
"Maybe because he is in love with Jiyeon!" You snapped, pulling out a random ornament that was gifted to you from your grandmother and settling it down on the coffee table. "I have spent my whole life with Jimin, and now he acts like he doesn't want to know me anymore."
"Yeah, but Jiyeon knows about the engagement," Hoseok shrugged, leaning forward. "You guys were basically engaged from the moment you were born. It has just taken twenty-one years to finally finalise it."
"I know that," you sighed heavily, settling yourself next to Hoseok. "Jimin and I are never going to fall in love. We tried it but we failed. Honestly."
Your father only cared about wealth, and what could strengthen his company. I wasn't sure why it was a good idea that you and Jimin were to be married in order for both companies to merge. However, your father was heartless who didn't care about his family, he only cared about money. Your mother abandoned you when you were younger because she couldn't handle you or the company's stress.
You were the heir to the K.J Group, and your father only wanted you for that reason. He was unconcerned about your feelings or well-being; he desired wealth and power, which he would soon obtain when you and Jimin married.
"Okay, enough of this sad topic, I'm getting depressed listening to you complain," Hoseok grinned, crossing his arms against his chest. "Let's do something fun tonight. Seokjin mentioned about this new club that is opening tonight. His cousin is performing, it should be fun right?"
"What is this club called?" you asked.
"I think it's called Magic Shop or something," Hoseok replied.
"Okay, I guess it will take my mind off everything," you said.
This club's concept was not what you expected. Everything was glitzy but quaint. Deep blue velvet sofas with sleek and inviting wood panels were used with white table clothed round tables. Marble floors and exceptional glitters were used to create a look that was both elegant and comfortable. The walls were adorned with neon-lit lights, and a massive chandelier hung in the centre of the room.
You moved your gaze to the back of the club, where the navy curtains were drawn to one side, and watched a woman take her place for the soundcheck. The lights give her cheeks a dewy glow, and she seemed bright-eyed and optimistic about her stage career, even if it was just making sure the stage was ready for the performers.
"I'm glad you can make it!" A voice exclaimed, jolting you and Hoseok back to reality and directing your gaze to Seokjin, who was striding up to you both with a drink in his hand. It was strange to see Seokjin outside his restaurant, let alone drinking. You'd always thought of him as someone who never took a break from his work. "My cousin should be performing soon, but thanks for coming to support him."
"I had to get out the house," you replied with a smile. "And Hoseok said I was making him depressed talking about my engagement."
"The owners of this place are right over there," Seokjin said, indicating a taller and a slightly smaller person with dark hair. The taller person wore a black velvet suit jacket with small gold stars stitched on it, while the smaller person wore a dark purple suit jacket while holding a glass of champagne. "They are both music lovers so, they worked extremely hard to design and create this place."
"I can tell with this classical music playing in the background," Hoseok said, pointing towards a classical piano piece playing softly in the background. "I guess the theme of this place is stars... Or magic?"
"I suppose. The taller one over there is Kim Namjoon and the one beside him is Min Yoongi." Seokjin replied, taking a sip out of his glass. "They wanted to create a place where new artists can show their talents, thank goodness V was chosen."
Your eyes widened as you recognised the name 'V.' You realised it was the boy you met a few weeks ago at the restaurant - the day you and Jimin got engaged. The rude boy who sounded as if he didn't care what he was saying. The boy who later revealed himself to be Seokjin's cousin.
"His name is V? As in the letter V?" Hoseok asked, raising an eyebrow in confusion.
"It's his stage name," Seokjin replied. "He rather be called 'V' in professional settings. I'm not sure why, but it's the way he goes around these days."
Before Hoseok and Seokjin could finish their conversation, the lights dimmed and Namjoon and Yoongi took the stage to introduce the opening act. Everyone applauds as V enters the stage, his hair slightly neater than the last time you saw him, and his bright blue hair reflected in the spotlight. He didn't wear his worn-out suit from before, but rather a much more expensive-looking burgundy suit. His eye make-up was still dark, and he smiled slightly as he looked above and beyond the crowd.
Everyone fell silent as V sat in front of the piano. V began to sing after a few chords were played. His voice rolled across the hills in sorrowful waves, swells of power rising in his throat. His voice was smooth, clear, and commanding. His voice soared above the notes and filled the room. V's voice was soothing in a way that brought tears to your eyes; it was so beautiful that you wished it would never end.
The thunderous applause at the end had to have been a sharp slap back to reality, as you brushed away the stray tears that had fallen from my eyes. But how can an arrogant boy be such a lovely singer? He smiled broadly before leaving the stage, as if he had undergone a personality change. Seokjin grinned along with Hoseok, but you were left baffled about what you just heard.
"I think this is the first time V had a huge audience who actually appreciated his voice," Seokjin said, as he followed him towards an empty booth. "At my restaurant, V would sing for hours and then drown himself in alcohol because no one appreciated him."
"He's a good singer, I'll give him credit for that," Hoseok told Seokjin, finishing his drink that he ordered during V's performance and then placing it on the table. "Is a club a place to really start out?"
"Actually yes," a voice interrupted, causing all of you to look up. V was standing there with his tie hanging low from his neck and his suit jacket draped over his arm and a glass of what you presume was some sort of alcoholic beverage in one hand. "The music industry is competitive, and nobody wants just any good singer."
"Have you ever auditioned for entertainment companies?" Seokjin asked V directly. "You need to start from somewhere, you can't just rely on your relative to hire you for places. Namjoon and I can't always be here for you."
"Namjoon?" You questioned.
"Yes, he's my half-brother." V said, squeezing beside Seokjin on the sofa booth. "Companies are full of rejection. It takes hard work and dedication to actually want to train there and I only want money so I can get the fuck out of this place."
"Running away from your problems doesn't resolve anything," Seokjin sighed, grabbing V's drink out from his hands. "Stop drinking, you will become alcoholic if you keep up with this. This isn't very good for your health."
"You don't need to worry about me," V said, a small smiled played on his lips as he snatched the drink back from Seokjin's hand. "I should get going, they don't need me anymore, and I don't care about the other performances."
Without another word, V finished his drink quickly and slammed the glass on the table. He stood up placing one of his hands inside the pockets of his trousers before making an exit. He didn't mutter a single 'goodbye' or anything, he just left, and his cousin frowned at his actions.
I wasn't sure why, but you had this urge to follow him. Somehow, he interested you. It wasn't his rudeness that attracted you, but it was the way he say which was so beautiful like he was another person. It was the way V came and went as he came, or the fact he was Seokjin's cousin in which their personalities were the complete opposite.
"I'm going out for some air," you stated, glancing between Seokjin and Hoseok. "I won't be long."
You spin on your heels and exit the club's front door for some fresh air. The city noise, the cacophony of honks, and the never-ending chatter soothed me. However, it will only serve to remind you that this is where you'll be living for the rest of your life and that you and Jimin will one day own one of the city's largest companies.
It was past midnight, and you found V standing at the curb outside. His suit jacket still hanging over his arm, but eyes fixed on the bright lights of the city in front of him. You watched him pull out a packet of cigarettes from his pocket and lit one, and placed it between his lips.
"That will kill you," you spoke suddenly, causing V to turn around.
"Why do you think I'm smoking it?" V scoffed, blowing out more smoke. "Like I told Seokjin back there, I don't need you to worry about me."
"I don't understand what's your problem?" You snapped, crossing your arms and leaning against the wall of the nightclub.
"Do you even know who I am?" He asked, taking another drag from his cigarette.
"Seokjin's cousin," you said sheepishly. You weren't sure what V was implying at the time, and the look of hurt on his face made you think he knew you or something. You didn't recognise his face, and you didn't know his real name. He was just known as V.
"Well try to remember my name. Kim Taehyung and come back to me when you remember," V said, gently removing the cigarette from his mouth and dropping it onto the ground and stubbed it with his foot. "I'll be at Magic Shop all week."
Within a brief moment, V - or now known as Taehyung, had disappeared down the street that he could no longer be seen again. You were left standing there in the cold weather watching his figure down the street. You knew that Taehyung was strange, but something told you that you knew each other in the past.

"Since you are both twenty-one, it's time to finalise you engagement," your father said coldly, clearing his throat and pushing his glasses up to the bridge of his nose.
Your romantic life was never open to you, and you were never free to love someone else. Your father had promised you would marry Park Jimin, the Park Corporations' only son. Your father had only recently decided that it was time to finalise your engagement to Jimin.
You were forced to meet Jimin and fall in love with him since you were young, but you did the exact opposite. Because you were both stubborn, you ended up becoming good friends because you both despised the idea of marrying each other. During your high school years, you both conspired, made bad bets, and made a few people cry. Jimin was your partner in crime, but the prospect of marrying him made you sick.
The worst bet you ever made was on who would fall in love first. Jimin was guilty of this when he fell in love with a sweet girl in one of his university classes. She was very nice and understanding about your future engagement because she loved and cared about Jimin and understood that you two had no feelings for each other.
"I want you to have this," Mr. Park said, sliding over a navy velvet box across the table towards you. "It was Jimin's grandmother's ring and now I want you to have it since you're both engaged."
You opened the small velvet box in front of you, revealing a gorgeous diamond ring with smaller diamonds encircling the band. It was breathtaking, but you knew you didn't deserve or want it. The ring was intended for Jimin's secret girlfriend, whom he adored more than you.
You nervously glanced between your father and Mr. Park, who gave you a small smile and insisted you put on the ring. You wanted to find love with someone else rather than be forced into something you didn't want to do. You aspired to be a self-sufficient woman and the heir to the family business. You knew the only reason they wanted this marriage so badly was to merge Park Corporations and K.J Group.
"Thank you," you nodded, slipping the diamond ring on your finger. It looked so beautiful on your hand, but it was official. You were now engaged to Park Jimin within the matter of seconds - the day you dreaded for years. "It's truly beautiful."
"Next week, you and Jimin will be moving in together," your father said, pulling out a key from the pocket of his suit jacket and passing it over towards you. "I brought you and Jimin a nice apartment in the middle of the city."
Every ticking second you sat there, it became more difficult to breathe. It was as if you couldn't make a choice for yourself. First, you were forced to marry, and second, you were forced to live together under the same roof. You had feelings for Jimin, but not in that way. He was your friend who helped you get through difficult times and on whom you could rely. Being his wife, on the other hand, made you sick. Nothing will ever change the fact that you had no affection for each other.
"Excuse me," you said, letting out a sigh. "I need to go to the restroom."
You stood up slowly, adjusting your dress before heading to the restrooms. You, on the other hand, took a detour to the bar. You sat on the bar stool, waiting for the bartender to come and serve you.
"Congratulations on your engagement," the bartender smiled, pointing towards you ring and wiping the surface in front of you. "I bet you father is thrilled."
"Seokjin, you know I've been dreading this day for years," you groaned, resting the side of your head with the palm of your hand. "Look, it's going to be my fault when Jimin has to break up with Jiyeon."
"She knows about the engagement, right?" He asked, placing a drink in front of you.
Kim Seokjin, the owner of this restaurant. Your family used to come here quite frequently before you all drifted apart. He was a few years older, but he became your friend when you and your father began arguing at the table. You would always sit here and talk to Seokjin because he was always willing to give you advice or listen to your endless rants.
"She does," You nodded, taking a sip of the drink Seokjin handed you and scrunching your nose at the bitter taste that entered your mouth. "If I didn't make that dumb bet two years ago, we wouldn't be in this mess and we would've been happy together."
"This isn't you fault Y/N," Seokjin reassured you. "He was going to fall in love sooner or later. Jimin has all the girls falling at his feet, you are just lucky to be married to someone so handsome."
"I don't want Jimin in that way," You scoffed, mixing the liquid in your glass with a straw, thinking that this would improve the taste of the alcohol. "Why me? I have two other siblings, why aren't they not being forced into what I am going through?"
"Maybe because Park Corporations is the biggest thing right now with their advances in new technology and brilliant ideas," Seokjin shrugged. "And by your luck, they only have on son and he is the same age as you. I'm jealous, if I wasn't married then I would want to marry Park Jimin too."
"Shut up -"
"Seokjin, the usual please." someone called out behind you, cutting you off.
You turn around to see a boy with electric blue hair, slightly wavy and messy, wearing a worn-out suit. He wore dark eye make-up which made his eyes stand out. The dark coloured make-up that surrounded his eyes, distracted the attention from the dark circles forming underneath.
"Ah, V!" Seokjin beamed, quickly preparing this guy's usual drink. You had never seen this person before, especially in this restaurant where you visit every Friday night. "V, meet Y/N."
"Hello," he waved, flashing a smile at you. "I'm Tae - uh no, V.
"Y/N."
"I know who you are," the guy named V replied. "The girl who is the heir to one of the biggest company in this city. You're the girl who is supposedly going to change K.J Group, am I right?"
“I supposed,” you muttered, letting out a deep sigh. You weren’t surprised people knew about your existence. It was all over the tabloids about the chosen heir to K.J Group, and the amount of press conferences you’ve done when your father was unable to attend due to business trips or important meetings.
“Must be nice,” V said, leaning against the counter and grabbing the drink that Seokjin placed in front of him. “To have everything handed to you just like that, you’ll have no trouble with live anyways.”
“What’s that supposed to me?” you snapped, shooting a glare towards V and taking a sip out of your drink.
“All rich people are the same,” V shrugged, swirling his drink around his glass. “Things are handed to you on a silver platter, and you’re instantly the top of everything. No finance worries or anything, you’re rich and we have to work hard for what we want to achieve.”
In his arrogant triumph, he smirked -just a small pouting of the lips and a narrowing of the eyes. It was subtle, it was even more infuriating for you who caught a glimpse of it. You could tell this guy named “V” wasn’t polite and he was just enjoying this small talk.
You could already tell that V acted clearly on impulse and created the reason for his actions after the fact he was just so arrogant to someone who he had just met. He was different, and he didn’t care about what he was saying to whoever.
“V, enough,” Seokjin sighed, the soft gaze that promised laughter and easy banter turned into a glare with an intensity that locked onto V. “She’s a customer, and you are a singer. You must respect everyone around you no matter what your view is on them.”
“Y/N, we are leaving,” a voice cut in, causing everyone to turn around. It was Jimin with his hands dug deep into the pockets of his trousers and his hair that was styled almost so perfectly before had fallen in front of his face.
“Look who it is,” V muttered bitterly under his breath. “Prince Charming.”
You ignored V and turned your full attention to Jimin. You nodded and said your final goodbye to Seokjin, and completely ignoring the presence of V. After tonight, you were glad to never see V again, as your new life was now beginning with Jimin.

Masterlist
Age Sixteen.
You met him when you were sixteen. It was the start of a new semester, and you had just transferred to a new high school due to your parents' new job. Leaving your hometown was filled with tearful farewells, and looking back at the house where you once grew up for sixteen years broke your heart. That's how you met him, then. He was loud and outgoing, but one day he sat next to you at lunch and handed you a carton of strawberry milk. His gaze met yours, and you smiled with a heartbeat.
His name was Jungkook. He became someone you needed to fill the void that was left inside you heart from the move. Jungkook was always there for you, cracking small jokes when you were sad or he would wait for you outside your street so you both could walk to school together.
Your sixteens were filled with unease and anxiety. You were still trying to fit in with your classmates while also adjusting to your new home in an unfamiliar town. Everything felt foreign, but Jungkook made you feel as if you had always belonged here, and the anxiety and uncertainty you felt soon faded.
You and Jungkook found many things in common like taking photos, eating ice cream and the love for cheesy romance films. Jungkook was good at films and the media while I was in favour of literature.
Jungkook always did well in school - he never missed a day of school, was always to class on time, turned his homework in when it was due, and maintained straight A’s. He was always fond of studying and doing well in school which made his parents proud. Jungkook studied hard for everything which you admired.
“Here you go,” Jungkook sighed heavily, handing over your iced tea that you asked him to order. “The line was so long. I hate you for making me wait in that.”
Under the summer sun, I feel the warmth of those brilliant rays of light ranting us new vibrant colours, softly brushing smiles upon faces. A heatwave was beginning in the city and the avenue was lined up with deep green foliage that stood in the June heat.
“You were the one who suggested we’d get something cold after school,” you replied back, rolling your eyes. In the haze of the afternoon, the summer sun was beating against your back relentlessly, forcing beads of sweat to drip down your forehead. “Then you suggested that you would pay, so I waited outside for you.”
“You literally picked the busiest coffee shop there is,” Jungkook continued to whine, wiping his forehead with the back of his hands. “Being friends with you is annoying and expensive.”
You both had taken the subway from school to a nearby park in the city, yet you were both exhausted from the long day of staring at the chalkboard and pretending to listen to what the teacher had to say. The ball of fire in the sky blazed with a brilliant amber, so bright that you couldn’t admire it for long. Days like this, you wished you had gone home and filled up the paddling pool instead of walking around the city with your school uniform clinging to us.
“I didn’t ask for you to pay for me,” you scoffed.
“Y/N,” Jungkook said, letting out a small laugh followed by another sigh. “You know, we are best friends and I’m joking!”
“I hate you,” you said, walking ahead of Jungkook, for him to quickly catch up with his longer legs.
“Hey, do you think we will still friends in the future?” He asked so suddenly, making you choke on your drink. “Taehyung told me people we were friends in school drift from each other after high school.”
“Good, I hope we aren’t” you stated, and he quickly hit your arm. “I’m joking! I hope we are still best friends by then. Is that what you want to hear?”
“I hope so,” Jungkook replied. You turned to look up at him who was focused on the scenery in from of you. The way his dark brown hair flopped over his forehead and his jawline was becoming more defined. You haven’t noticed it before but Jungkook was change, not in personality but in appearance.
Jungkook has a lot of other friends that were really nice like Taehyung and Jimin. He was popular in your school because he seemed to charm everyone around him with his constant dad jokes and kindness towards other people. However, they didn’t know much about his personal life.
You gained a few friends when you were sixteen, and began to fit in with your classmates. You spent the whole year avoiding drama, or gossip so you ended up staying beside Jungkook.
“We could end up marrying each other one day,” Jungkook shrugged, flickering his eyes towards you and putting his hands in the pockets of his trousers.
“I don’t think that would ever happen,” you told him. “It isn’t like the movies. I would never fall in love with you. You are really gross and annoying.”
“Hey!” Jungkook exclaimed, hitting you on the arm again. “You aren’t the prettiest person either. You are ugly for a girl.”
“Stop being rude,” you whined, followed by a laugh and hitting him on the chest quickly. “Not everyone can be Jeon jungkook who has all the girls begging to date him.”
“You’re right,” he chuckled. “All the girls want a piece of this.”
“Gross,” you groaned, throwing your cup away in the trashcan and smoothing down your skirt with your hands. “Let’s just leave before we end up with bruises on our arms.”
At age sixteen, it was a year of happiness.
Age Seventeen.
At seventeen, things were slowly beginning to change. You and Jungkook argued frequently over small things that only mattered at the time. Taehyung called you both an old married couple because of the frequent bickering and arguments you both did. It all began when you both stopped speaking to each other for three solid days. From the moment that you and Jungkook stopped speaking for three days, the realisation hit that you were lonely and too dependent on him.
At the time, you were both stupid and naïve for arguing with each other. You both were only thinking about your own feelings rather than each others. You had been so mad at Jungkook because of his stupid decisions and the way he spoke to you.
Jungkook and you were both of the age where you wanted to start dating. According to school gossip, Jungkook became a "heartthrob over summer," and most of the girls in your class had a crush on him at the time. Jeon Jungkook began dating a new girl every two weeks, which resulted in him breaking a lot of girls' hearts and establishing himself as the school's biggest player.
You met Kim Namjoon at the start of the school year. He had just transferred to this school because he moved to a new house closer to where his parents worked. He was extremely smart and friendly to everyone including you. You instantly connected with Namjoon and feelings began to bloom between you both. Namjoon was sweet and kind to you, he would always treat you well and made you happy.
While you were happy in your relationship with Namjoon, Jungkook was onto his next girlfriend - not knowing how long they would last. She was a senior girl named Sohee. She was a quite popular senior and people considered Jungkook a lucky guy for dating such a gorgeous girl. However, Jungkook began to change before you eyes. He had become distant and distracted with the number of girls he slept with, he began slacking in his studies. This became a shock to both Taehyung and Jimin who had higher exam scores than Jungkook. You weren’t sure if it was because he was surrounded by girls all the time, or whether he didn’t want to be the best anymore.
You only recently found out due to his father’s high expectations, Jungkook was forced to study hard and do something he didn’t love. His father wanted Jungkook to become a doctor and study at Seoul National University but it was something Jungkook didn’t want. He wanted to become a film director in the future but if he ever told his father that, he would instantly disapprove his career path. Maybe, this was the best way of rebelling against his father’s wishes by not studying hard enough.
Weeks later, not to your surprise, Jungkook and Sohee broke up. However, this time he was clearly hurt over it because it was it was Sohee who ended things with Jungkook. This probably broke Jungkook’s ego as she was the first girl to ever break up with him, breaking his current streak of breaking other people’s hearts. As the superior Jungkook did what he did best and moved on from his current heartbreak from Sohee and dated another girl. That was when things began to turn sour between you both.
Jungkook became very bitter regarding the topic of Namjoon. He clearly showed that he disliked him and always questioned whether you were happy in our relationship. There wasn’t a moment when Jungkook was constantly complaining about the lack of attention and time you were giving him.
Your first initial thought was because Namjoon was better at studying than Jungkook. The situation made you feel terrible because you realised that Jungkook wasn’t happy that you were dating Namjoon, but you liked him too much and didn’t want to lose any of them at the time. Namjoon was charming, too well spoken and handsome. He was another person who you cared for, and that you became too dependent on Jungkook over the last year. You couldn’t just rely on Jungkook every time you felt sad or angry, after all he was just your friend, not your boyfriend.
“Y/N!” A voice yelled and quickly grabbed your wrist before you could react to the person shouting your name. You turned your head slowly to see Jungkook, shooting you a worried glance. “Why are you avoiding me?”
After a long school day, you had been trying to avoid Jungkook for almost a week. You'd get out of the house early to avoid him waiting for you at the bottom of your street so you could walk together. You were mad at him for making you choose between Namjoon and Jungkook so, you distanced yourself from Jungkook.
“What do you think?” You asked, tears already brimming the edges of your eyes.
“What are you talk about?” Jungkook questioned, softening his grip from your wrist and furrowed his eyebrows, scanning the area around you as if he was trying to figure out the answer.
“Namjoon and I broke up,” you stated calmly, yet bitterly. You shook Jungkook’s grip off your wrist and gripped onto your backpack tightly, ready to walk away from him. “If that is what you wanted to hear, then that’s your answer.”
The break up between you and Namjoon didn’t end on bad terms. It was a mutual agreement to end things between you both. Namjoon understood why you wanted to break up with him, even though it was stupid of you to break up because of Jungkook. You admitted it hurt your heart but it was the right thing to do. After all, you and Namjoon agreed to be friends after the break up. You felt like your heart was being ripped from your chest and the happiness you once had was beginning to crumble.
“I’m so sorry,” Jungkook said softly, his hand reaching out for your shoulder but you immediately took a few steps back to avoid his touch. “I mean it when I say it, but I didn’t want this to happen.”
“Jungkook, I’m not talking about this here,” you snapped, turning around so that your back was now facing him and continued your walk home.
The walk home was silent and uncomfortable with Jungkook trailing behind you like a lost puppy. You and Jungkook ended up at the front door of your house, thankfully your parents ween’t home to hear you yelling at Jungkook. From the last few weeks, you wanted to cry at how frustrated and drained you were trying to please Jungkook and Namjoon. You felt compelled to vent and blame him for your heartache, despite the fact that you had chosen to stop your relationship with Namjoon.
“Y/N, I didn’t like Namjoon,” Jungkook truthfully admitted breaking the silence between you both, and ss you entered your home, you both closed the front door behind you.
“Can I ask why?”
“I was jealous,” Jungkook said quickly, His eyes bore into yours, as if he was attempting to concoct a reason to justify himself in the position. “You spend all your time with him yet you don’t give me a single minute. I was your friend before he was your boyfriend.
“Bullshit Jungkook,” you said angrily. The room felt like it was closing in around you. In your mind, you were growing larger and larger, expanding with rage. You felt like any minute now, you were going to explode in front of Jungkook. “What do you take me for? I’m not the kind of person who would ditch their friend for their boyfriend.”
“What else do you want from me?” Jungkook sighed hard, averting his gaze from you and folding his arms across his chest impatiently. "I expressed my regret and provided you with an explanation."
"Why do we keep going around in circles?" you wondered, frowning at him. "We keep returning to the same subject, as if I'm the type of person who would break up friendships over a boyfriend."
“Oh, I don’t know Y/N. Maybe because you started changing because of him,” Jungkook tapped his foot impatiently against the rough wooden floor under him, as if he was about to burst out the door at any moment. "Everyone has noticed it, including me."
“Me? Changing? Jungkook, please. Just because girls seem to be interested in you doesn't mean you're a celebrity!" You screamed. "You're the one who's suddenly failing your classes."
“Whatever. "Fuck this," Jungkook snarled as he turned away from him and slipped on his shoes. He walked into your house and slammed the front door shut behind him. You were aware that your rage was dissipating, yet you still felt guilty.
Another argument has broken out between you two, but this time it's serious. You were continuously accusing each other of the same thing, but you never took the time to sit down and talk about it. It was one of your friendship's flaws. However, citing his grades was a step too far this time, and it was plainly a sensitive subject. You were so preoccupied with your own sentiments that you forgot Jungkook had feelings as well, albeit he didn't display them very much.
It took three days for you and Jungkook to talk to each other. Jungkook was the first to apologise, arriving late at night with black circles and bloodshot eyes at your door. You finally got down and talked to each other about the issues that were plaguing your friendship. You and Jungkook cried the entire night, realising that the whole thing was a waste of time.
Even when you thought the worst in Jungkook, there was kindness in his smile, a gentleness. It was the smile of someone who laughed with ease. He was the kind of person who lived how he believed people should, as if he were sunshine that radiated from the best aspects of those he met, their flaws which were entirely invisible to his graze. He was a calm sea. Yet, important of all, he was my best friend.
Seventeen, we realised that things do change. We realised that communication is the key in everything.
Age Eighteen.
You were finally graduating from high school at the age of eighteen. University seemed to be the only option available after long hours of studying and deciding what you wanted to do with your life.
It took Jungkook a long time to persuade his father that he wanted to become a film major at university. After watching Jungkook’s short film he produced, his father agreed and allowed him to study film instead of medicine. Eventually, Jungkook was accepted to one of the top universities in Seoul, scoring high on his college entrance exams and producing an amazing short film about life within high school. You were accepted into a psychology course in a university that wasn’t too far where you lived.
When Jungkook invited you to visit his vacation home in Busan with Taehyung and Jimin, it was your first summer vacation. You readily accepted since, after months of tension and sleepless nights, you needed a vacation from Seoul and didn't want to think about the issues of finally banding together. For a change, you just wanted to forget about your troubles for a while.
When Jungkook met Hana, his first proper girlfriend, he had ceased becoming the school's biggest player. He fell hard and fast in love with her, and he talked about her in such a loving way that it seemed like he never wanted to let go of her. They split up lately after nine months of dating because she wanted to concentrate on her education. So, instead of Hana, you've ended up on this tour. Jungkook was unhappy and heartbroken over it, but he managed to divert his attention away from it.
Days consisted of the sun shining strongly against pure blue skies, with the only source of relief being the villa's pool. It's been a week since you all came, and all you've done is lounge by the pool or hang out on the beach because the heat was awful.
You were sitting on the pool's edge, your legs dangling in the water, while you watched Jungkook swim around you, splashing water in your direction every few minutes, trying to entice you in the pool.
“Why won’t you come in?” Jungkook asked, swimming over to you and pushing his hair away from his face. “The water doesn’t bite.”
“I told you multiple times. I can’t swim,” you scoffed, pulling your sunglasses down to the bridge of your nose. “Besides, I won’t drown if I sit here.”
“Come on, I’ll teach you,” Jungkook insisted, leaning against the swimming pool wall. “It’s not hard! I promise I won’t let you drown.”
You were never given the opportunity to learn to swim. It wasn't because you didn't want to learn, because you did. Your parents were always too preoccupied with their jobs and continual travel to take you to swimming classes, so they never had the opportunity to teach you. So, you had a rather boring childhood. You wouldn't be able to accomplish simple things like learn to ride a bike or swim at this age, and you'd be humiliated if you attempted.
Jungkook's hand grabbed around your ankle and pulled you under the water before you could respond. His arms wrapped around your waist and pulled you to the surface, preventing you from drowning. You balanced both hands on each side of his shoulder, coughing up the water you had breathed and slowly opening your eyes to see how close your faces were.
“You’re an asshole,” you sneered, followed by Jungkook laughing at you.
You moved your hair out of your face and lifted one of your hands away from his shoulder. When your gaze met his, you both found yourself gradually leaning in. You'd noticed how much jungkook had changed since you were both sixteen. He wasn't the chubby and short haired kid who made him appear younger than he was.
You were adamant about not moving. You were gasping for air. It was as if you were trapped in place, your heart thumping furiously against your chest. You felt compelled to kiss him for a little moment, but you knew it was inappropriate because Jungkook had recently split up with Hana, and he was also your friend, and friends don't kiss each other.
“Guys! Lunch is ready!” Taehyung shouted from inside, causing you both to back away slowly where you were now coming back to reality.
Jungkook coughed and assisted you in exiting the pool. He snatched the nearest towel from the chair and flung it at you as if nothing had happened between you. You and Jungkook continued joking and having fun as usual on that day. It was as if the special moment between you two had vanished and was never spoken again.
-:-:-:-:-
Everyone was invited to a bonfire party on the second last day of vacation. Jimin believed it would be a nice idea if you all went to the party and spent your final days in Busan together. Jungkook's childhood friend, who he only spoke to every summer when he came here with his parents, held the party.
By the time daylight had passed, the sun had begun to set and the evening shadows had begun to develop. The flames arrived to brighten the night and warm the air, which was accustomed to the new summer heat. By this time, everyone had become tipsy or drunk and was mixing with the other guests.
To get away from the large crowd, you and Jungkook slipped out further away from the shore. The heat of the summer night, as well as the booze you had consumed, scorched your face. Jungkook grabbed your hand and dragged you away from the crowd and the music.
“Jeon Jungkook, are you happy?” You asked, adding a little giggle at the end as you both stopped walking to admire how beautiful the stars above you were and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks were soothing. “I’m happy. This is the first time in so long I can feel like this.”
“I am happy, especially when I am with you,” Jungkook slurred on his words. You glanced over at him and your eyes met with his. “When I’m married, I’ll think of you. The good times we had together.”
You both stared at one other for a minute, just smiling and enjoying each other's presence, until you felt yourself leaning closer. Something ignited when your lips met his, and the kiss deepened as Jungkook wrapped his hand around your waist, pulling you closer to him. When you closed your eyes, all of your troubles vanished from your mind. Jungkook pulled away a few minutes later, realising what had just happened.
“Y/N, we can’t do this,” Jungkook said quickly, biting the bottom of his lip and scratching the back of his neck. You didn’t feel drunk anymore, and you both stared at each other with confusion and panic written across your faces. “Friends can’t kiss each other. Beside, Hana and I are thinking about getting back together.”
“You’re right. This shouldn’t have happened.” You replied, smiling weakly and taking a few steps back from him. The feeling of your heart sinking at his words. “I’m going to check on Taehyung. You know what he’s like when he’s drunk.”
“Y/N...” Jungkook’s voice trailed, reaching out to grab your hand.
“It’s fine,” you reassured him, shaking his hand away from yours. You turned around and made your way back to the party where Taehyung and Jimin were. Your heart was suddenly aching, and you could feel the tears slipping down your face as you walked further away from Jungkook.
The holiday ended quickly, and nobody recalled anything that happened that night on the beach. Things were still awkward between you and Jungkook, but you both got over it eventually. The kiss was never mentioned and Jungkook acted like nothing happened. However, you felt something that you knew wasn’t right.
Soon enough, the news came out that Jungkook and Hana were back together. They were happy.
Eighteen, what an awkward year.
Age Nineteen.
Nineteen became your most hated period of time. You entered your first year of university a few months after that holiday in Busan, when you learned the unexpected news of your father's illness. You and your mother had not expected any of this to happen, but he became severely ill during his freshman year.
You and Jungkook became distant with each other. He occupied most days with his coursework or Hana, while you skipped most classes to visit your dad in the hospital. Your conversations were simple and short but they were your safe haven during the time you had to travel between the hospital and university. Nevertheless, soon that painful news arrived, another came along to take its place. Jungkook decided to study abroad in America for two years.
You had to force a smile when Jungkook told you the news. You needed him to be by your side at the moment, even though that sounded selfish because as much as you wanted Jungkook to live his life, and do what he loved, a part of you wanted him to stay. You told him it would be a great opportunity and to go through with it, even though it broke your heart.
On Jungkook’s last day in Seoul, you met up at a small coffee shop that you both used to go to everyday after school. Over the phone, Jungkook seemed extremely excited to tell you something but you weren’t in the mood to see anyone that day. Your mood plummeted when you got a phone call from your mom saying your dad has to go in for surgery due to heart complications. You wanted to be alone and dwell in your sadness, but it was Jungkook’s last day after all, so once again you had to force another fake smile.
“Hana said she will come with me to America,” Jungkook began, a smile widening on his face. “I really love her, and I think I’m going to propose to her. I can’t imagine myself with anyone else, you know?”
Those words felt like the final shove to push you over the edge. Your whole body was now going numb as those words registered into your brain. Thinking about Jungkook and Hana hurt, but now you realised it was going to be forever was indescribably painful. You would never have him and he would never be yours. The any chance of you two being together was officially gone.
“I’m not sure when I’ll propose to her, but make in the next year or something.”
You knew you should be smiling or at least responding to him, but the muscles in your face refused to move, as if they were frozen in place. Your mind was racing at a million miles per hour, but it was unable to form any thoughts. Jungkook's eyes were burning into you, and your heart was now pounding wildly against your chest.
“Please say something,” Jungkook said softly, his eyes boring to mine.
“I’m happy for you,” you said mutely, your eyes burning and your mouth growing dry. All you wanted was to curl up in your bed and be alone to wallow in self-pity and hatred. You couldn't show Jungkook how much your heart was broken. You could deal with the crushing emotions that were swallowing you whole later, but right now you had to sit here and pretend to support Jungkook's decision. "Hana is incredibly lucky."
“Are you sure? You don’t look very happy,” he said, barely audible as he continued to stare at you, the look of panic replaced with concern and it was growing by the second.
“I am happy,” you lied. “You love each other, and she’s willing to move so far away with you. I am just surprised that you jumped to the topic of marriage so suddenly.”
“I know, we’ve been off and on for the last two years and that we are still teenagers,” Jungkook continued, his eyes lighting up as he talked about Hana. “She got accepted into the same school as me, so I think it’s fate. I have never felt like this before, and I know she’s the one.”
“You are my best friend, and I’m just really happy this is happening for you. She loves you and you love her, it’s perfect.”
You knew you were rambling too much to sound normal, and he could tell something was wrong by the look on your face. Your brain was pleading with you to remain silent. Perhaps you could frame this conversation as a case of over-excitement or extreme surprise.
“I will always have you as well,” Jungkook reassured, leaning over the table and grabbed your hand, squeezing it tightly. “I know things haven’t been great recently, and this is an awful time to leave you, but I’ll make sure Taehyung and Jimin comes over to keep you company.”
“It’s alright, it’s your dream. Don’t let my personal life hold you back, idiot,” you said softly, looking up and giving him a small smile. The tears were already whelming up in your eyes. Every piece of news given to you recently were hard and painful. It was like the world was giving up on you and giving you the worst luck ever. “It’s going to be so hard not seeing your ugly face every day.”
“I’ll alway be here for you no matter what. You know what,” Jungkook said seriously, his eyes boring into mine with a concerned expression on his face.
“My father is doing just fine. We will be okay.” You lied. “Don’t worry about me.”
“I’m glad,” he said, eyes glued onto my face as he tried to gauge whatever was running through your head. It was like he was trying to look for something or trying to read your mind but had no idea what was happening. Jungkook knew you too well to know something was wrong though he could never figure you out completely. “Why do you seem so... not you?”
“I’m fine,” you reassured him. “I just feel very overwhelmed with everything going on. I think I should go.”
The lies escaped your lips one after another. You just hoped you sounded more convincing out loud than in your head. Even if you tried, you were never good at lying to anyone especially to Jungkook who knew you better than anyone. Jungkook was your friend, and you should’ve been mores supportive over their relationship no matter how hard it was.
“Do you want me to walk you home?”
“No, it’s okay. I have to pick a few things on the way home,” your voice began to shake, and your eyes were whelming up.
“I’m going to call you later, okay?” His voice was quiet, but serious. One thing Jungkook was good at was not letting things go, and for once you were a bit unhappy about it. The last thing you needed was another conversation with Jungkook asking you what was wrong. You quickly mentally noted to turn your phone off as soon as you got home. You could deal with him another time but not now.
You grabbed your coat, immediately ripping your gaze away from Jungkook, pushing the glass doors and made your way outside. The second as the wind brushed against your skin, you felt the sudden pain boiling over you, as your eyes filled with pointless tears while you walked down the street. It felt like you have been dropped in a pool of ice-cold water, and your body was seizing up. Every nerve on your body was working overtime, but somehow dull all at once.
How could you be so stupid? How could you let yourself fall in love with someone who could never love you back, especially that person being your best friend.
Soon, it became Jungkook’s time to leave Seoul for two years. At the airport, it was Jungkook’s family, Taehyung and I waving him goodbye. Hana was there with her hand intertwined with his and smiling at each other every glance they got.
“Are you okay?” Taehyung whispered, leaning closer towards you.
“I’ll be fine,” you sniffled, quickly brushing the stray tear that left your eye. “Two years won’t hurt right?”
You tried your hardest not to cry when Jungkook gave me one last bone-crushing hug before taking Hana’s hand again and headed towards the departure gate. Once you couldn’t see Jungkook or Hana from the distance, you broke down in tears. He was really gone, and you were sure what hurt the most: Losing your best friend or never telling him your feelings.
Age nineteen, what a mess.
Age Twenty.
Twenty was lonely.
Jungkook already went through his first year of his study abroad programme and he told you about his time in America and how he loved being there while learning new skills. Although time differences were a struggle, but you still managed to call each other once a week. Most of the time you’d fall asleep on the phone to him while he was just getting up to start his day. The neighbourhood seemed empty without his presence. Most days, you were consumed in your own thoughts that made silence seem so loud.
He would ask about your father but you would lie and change the subject quickly. His condition was a lot worse than last year and he decided to come home and live what so little time he had left at your home. Your father was extremely weak and struggled to walk these days as the pain he had was unbearable. So, he was forced to sit in a wheelchair and had to take so much medication every day to ease the pain. You didn’t want Jungkook to worry though, you told him everything was fine and he should continue living his life. You were constantly reminded how unhappy and lonely you were as you watched your father’s life fade away every day.
It was your decision to drop out of university this year. The workload and your father’s condition combined in one was becoming too difficult for you to balance as you were in a constant state of stress and anxiety. It became beneficial for you mental health. While your mom worked, you stayed at home with your father as you wanted to be beside him as long as possible. You promised that you would go back to studying the year after, and that you would be healthier and happier when you returned to university again. It was another thing you never told Jungkook about that year, you didn’t want to worry him.
Taehyung and Jimin visited frequently to make sure you were okay. You were thank you had them as friends because they filled the void that Jungkook left and they took your mind off things when you were upset or anxious about things going on in my life. They would drag you out the house to go for food or they would just stay with you until it was late. They both promised not to tell Jungkook about my father or dropping out of university, and once again you were thankful.
Jungkook and Hana were still strongly in love. Every phone call you received from Jungkook was mostly hoe much he loved Hana and his thoughts on proposing to her soon. Even though it hurt you when he talked about proposing to her, you had to sit and listen about it which hurt your heart knowing he will never love you the same way.
It was that time of year and Jungkook was finally coming home for Christmas for the first time in a year. However, you had to endure this Christmas with Hana as well. You couldn’t tell whether you were excited to see him, or you were completely dreading everything coming towards you at Christmas.
Even if it was only for a few hours on Christmas day, you found yourself standing outside Jungkook’s house and could hear the muffled voices on the other side of the door. Just hearing his faint laughter made your stomach do small involuntary twists. You took one last long deep breath before the door swung open.
“You are finally here!” Jungkook smiled, nearly knocking you over into a tight hug, a laugh leaving your lips as you wrapped your arms around the towering boy. Your eyes felt heavy, fluttering shut as you squeezed him tightly, his nose burying against your shoulder. “It’s really good to see you.”
For a moment, it felt like it was just the two of you. Just you and Jungkook, with his arms holding you and his smell of his cheap cologne that he always wore making you feel intoxicated. Your back arched some, so you pressed onto him, his own body leaning forward as he nuzzled against your shoulder. Jungkook took a deep breath into your skin, fingertips pressing onto your back as if he was trying to pull you closer to him.
“I missed you,” you muttered, eyes opening and focusing on the gorgeous girl standing behind him by the door. Reality began to slap you in the face, and realisation hit that Jungkook had a girlfriend he loved. You felt sick to your stomach, grip loosening around him in an instant as you began to pull away slowly. “Hana, right?”
The moment the words left your mouth, he seemed to quickly to detach himself from you and began hastily moving beside his girlfriend. They looked incredible together, his arm easily slinking around her and her face heating up when Jungkook pressed a small kiss on her cheek.
“You remember Y/N, right?”
“Of course, we went to the same school together!” Hana giggled, walking towards you and pulling you into a tight hug. “Jungkook has also told me so much about you.”
“Okay, don’t expose me like this,” Jungkook whined, running his finger through his hair. Hana let go of you and moved back to strange beside Jungkook who was blushing furiously. “Well, we better go back inside and open the presents before dinner.”
-:-:-:-:-:-
A few hours ended up staying for dinner. You were uncomfortable here. Uncomfortable being sat right in front of Jungkook where you had the perfect sight of Hana and Jungkook side by side, feeding each other bites of their dinner. Every so often, Taehyung would make quiet gagging noises beside you to make you laugh as he was just as uncomfortable as you were.
It felt too overwhelming, them being so in love. The anxious feeling in your chest every time Jungkook took a second glance at your way. Your nerves were at max capacity, body nearly buzzing from the emotion bottled up inside of you and all you wanted to do is go home where you wouldn’t feel this way.
You sighed quietly, and pushed your chair out, excusing yourself as Jungkook’s family and Taehyung all fell into silence to hear the story that Jungkook was telling them about. Hana had her hand over Jungkook’s while she laughed and smiled beside him.
The moment the bathroom door closed behind you. You sighed heavily, leaning your back against the hard-wooden door and closing your eyes in sheer relief that you could be in here for a solid minute lost in your thoughts. You were on edge of a mental breakdown and your brain was on overdrive to keep you from functioning. You were holding so much in, and you didn’t want to hurt anyone’s heart in the process of hurting yourself, but at this rate you couldn’t handle your own feelings that now were consuming you.
After quickly splashing your face with cold water and a few deep breaths, you adjusted your body to stand up straight. You pushed the door and gave yourself a mental pep talk on the way back to the dining room, aware that silenced has filled the room.
You scrunched your face as you entered the dining room, confused why Jungkook and Hana were stand, and no one was speaking. Jungkook had his back to you and Hana’s big brown eyes were sparkling, focusing clearly on Jungkook. That’s when his body sunk down to the floor and onto one knee, you body immediately halting at this very moment.
This wasn’t happening.
This couldn’t be happening.
But it was.
Gasps filled the air with excited squeals from Jungkook’s family. Hana’s hand lifting up to her mouth and covering it in shock, her own eyes filling up with tears just as yours were. However, Hana’s tears were of happiness and joy whereas yous were not. From the corner, you could see Jungkook holding a red velvet box where the ring was positioned nicely in the middle as it sparkled under the faint light. The world felt like it stopped spinning and your lungs stopped functioning as Jungkook turned around and his eyes met yours for a split second before turning back to Hana.
“Hana, I know we are young but I am sure you are the one I want to spend my whole life with,” Jungkook said, with a shaky voice but a smile. “Will you marry me?”
“Yes!”
Those exact words made your world crumble inside. Everyone burst into cheers and clapping at her answer as Jungkook slipped the ring on her finger, but your body was shaking uncontrollably as everyone rushed over to Jungkook leaving you standing alone. Your feet carried itself backwards, and your eyes burned with tears that were beginning to fall from the corner of your eyes.
Your body pushed forward and rushed out the doors of the dining room, your body collapsing forwards as you stumbled out of Jungkook’s house and choked out on a sob that ripped from your throat. You couldn’t hide your true feelings anymore, and didn’t care that you were being selfish. You couldn’t pretend for the rest of your life that you were okay with everything and you were in love with your best friend.
“Y/N,” a voice spoke softly, placing their hand on your shoulder. You looked up - your vision being distorted from the tears that you could only figure out it was Taehyung. He looked at you with a sympathetic look which made the next tears seem so much stronger. “I know you love him. I can see it in your eyes, and I didn’t know he was going to propose to her tonight. He mentioned it but I didn’t expect him to go through with it.”
“Why does it hurt so bad?” You croaked.
“Love always hurts,” Taehyung said quietly, patting your back gently.
“I’ve tried to be happy for Jungkook. I tried so hard to accept this but nothing I do is making it easier. It hurts, and I want it to stop.”
Your crying was subsiding but the ache in your chest was only growing. The tears began falling down your face and you heard footsteps coming outside. Jungkook had stepped outside and your body began to seize again, the tears returning faster as you covered your face with your hans. Taehyung moved over to cover you, but you could only see a glimpse of Jungkook’s worried figure.
“Jungkook, get back inside.”
“Taehyung no,” Jungkook snapped, trying to get around Taehyung who was blocking you. Jungkook’s hand reached out to touch your arm but you flinched away, turning your back against him and facing the road ahead of you. “Please look at me. Please talk to me Y/N, stop shutting me out.”
“It’s okay Taehyung. I feel like there is no running away from this,” you said, looking at Taehyung and giving him a reassuring smile, but he just moved out the way clearly because he didn’t want to go back inside.
“Why...” he started quietly, his hands lifting as if to reach out for you, but you stepped back.
“You and I both know why Jungkook, you aren’t stupid.” you sighed.
Jungkook sighed deeply, his hand reaching to rub the back of his neck as his eyes flickered towards you. You could feel his gaze burning holes into your skin, but you could barely look up to face him. You were terrified of his reaction that the truth was out and there was no going back.
“How did it happen? The kiss?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m so sorry Y/N. If I made you feel that way, but we are only supposed to be best friends, and this can’t happen to us.” He whispered as he stepped forward to get closer to you. “Friends aren’t supposed to feel like this for each other.”
“Then we can’t be friends anymore,” you replied, your voice cracking and you looked up at him. “Let’s forget each other. It’s easier for me as it is for you. You are now engaged, and in love with someone else.”
“What? No.” He said immediately, the sound of his own voice squeaking as he spoke and the tears whelming up in his own eyes. “I need you.”
“You don’t need me anymore, and it’s too painful to even be friends with you anymore. I’m sorry if I’m being selfish. I just can’t do it anymore, so I’m putting myself first for the first time in so long.” You whispered. “You will always have Hana who loves you more than anything in the world.”
“But I can’t be happy if you aren’t in my life.”
“I can’t be happier here anymore, especially with you. Do you know what it’s like to watch someone you love, love some else Jungkook?” Your throat feeling like hands were around it, choking you as you tried to speak. Your breathing became shaky, voice thick from crying. “It’s the most painful thing in the entire universe. I don’t like who I’ve become anymore, and I don’t want to wake up every morning want to cry because you don’t love me.”
“I do love you,” his voice cut in, eyes boring into mine across the porch. “You mean everything to me, much more than I can explain.”
“You may not love me but you’re not in love with me,” you wavered as you tore your gaze from him. “There is a difference, and distance is what we need so you can focus on getting married and I can focus on my life, and move on.”
“Please don’t go,” Jungkook begged, the tears falling out of his eyes. His voice barely audible as he stepped closer to yo, and his bottom lip trembling. “You are my best friend.”
“I’m so sorry, this was supposed to be the happiest night of your life yet, I’ve ruined it because I can’t control how I feel about you,” you said quietly, walking closer to Jungkook. Your hands reaching up and cupping his cheeks, dragging away his fallen tears with your thumb. “Thank you for everything, and I’m sorry.”
You let go of Jungkook and backed away from him. Taehyung took you back to his house that night and let you stay over because he didn’t want you to be alone. The tears were still falling harder from your eyes as you laid beside Taehyung who was soundly asleep beside you.
Twenty, a tragedy and you lost your best friend.
Aged Twenty-One
Twenty-one, you left Seoul for good. Your mom thought it was a good idea to get out Seoul for a while because you were constantly reminded how unhappy you were living here in this city, and you wanted to forget the last five years of your life. A few months turned into a year, celebrating your 21st birthday alone was also pretty tragic. You moved in with you aunt who stayed herself on the outskirts of the town you grew up in. Only now, Jungkook seemed to be something out of a dream. He only existed in photographs and memories.
A few months after you and Jungkook stopped speaking, your father had taken his last days in Seoul. He passed peacefully watching the sun set down in the garden of the home you spent the last five years in. Your mom wanted to stay in Seoul where she treasured her memories that were made and where the love of her life spent his remaining years in this house. So, you decided to escape the streets and leave everything behind.
You followed your father’s wishes that year, going back to university in a nearby city where you made new friends. His name was Jung Hoseok, and he was the most friendliest and carefree guy you ever met. The way his happiness radiated off everyone else, there never a dull moment around when Hoseok was there. He was always finding new ways to include you in activities with his other friends.
Hoseok was also a psychology student, so you had more things in common such as what profession you both wanted out this degree. He cared about your feelings and knew why you left so abruptly from the city. He was someone who you relied on when you needed advice.
You both tried having a romantic relationship with each other, but it didn’t work out. You didn’t feel that spark between us and you thought remaining as friends was good for you both. He knew that I still had feelings for Jungkook even though you barely spoke about him these days. You heart remained empty and cold, waiting for someone to fill the void that left Jungkook.
Taehyung was the only person you kept in touch with from Seoul but you never mentioned where you went. You didn’t tell him, but he was okay with that. All he knew that you were safe and trying to live your life as much as possible. At first, he updated you with Jungkook news but you told him you no longer wanted to hear it anymore because it hurts too much to think about him, and remember your past that you shared. You wanted a fresh start this year, no heartbreak and no Jungkook.
Exams were finally over. Hoseok and some of his friends decided to go to a bar that evening to celebrate completing your exams for the year which was extremely difficult. After pulling all-nights and drinking as much caffeine to keep you awake, you were finally able to relax and not care about anything else in the world.
“Woah, slow down,” Hoseok laughed, taking the shot of soju away from your hands. It was the second time drinking since that Summer in Busan and you still couldn’t handle your alcohol. “We have been here for two house and you are drinking that like water, including the other beverages you ordered.”
“Why should I?” You said, grabbing the shot back and took it quickly, holding your breath as the bitter taste burned your throat. If you thought about it, it was nice of him to keep reminding you as you ordered more drinks at the bar. However, if I was a bit sober, you would actually listen to Hoseok and listen to him by slowing down on you alcohol intake tonight.
“At least pace yourself,” Hoseok reminded you again as he shook his head.
“Why should I?” You repeated, straightening up in your seat and trying to wave the bartender to serve you again. “I have not had a drink since that summer. I’ve earned my wait.”
“What happened that summer?” Your other friend, Rena asked. Rena was one of Hoseok’s many friends before you moved to this town. She was nice, and extremely smart, studying medicine.
“I kissed my best friend at some bonfire party,” you said with a drunken smile across your face, as you poured the soju that was sitting in front of you into a glass. “He acted like it never happened but that’s when I had this huge crush on him. Why do I like him so much? He doesn’t know I exist anymore. He doesn’t even text me to see if I’m okay.”
“Ouch,” Rena replied, running her fingers through her long dark hair and exchanging glances between Hoseok and I. “You never told me what happened in the last five years.”
“She doesn’t need to talk about it,” Hoseok stepped in quickly, shooting a glare at Rena.
“I fell in love,” you sighed, leaning forward and placing the palm of your hand under your chin and stared at the empty glasses in front of you. “I fell in love with my best friend and I miss him but that’s my fault. I told him we couldn’t be friends anymore.”
“Why don’t you speak to him? Amend things.” Rena asked.
“I don’t want to speak to Jungkook,” you answered stubbornly as you glanced over at Rena. “He’s engaged now, he doesn’t need me. Who the fuck gets engaged at twenty years old? He’s still a child.”
“Is that why you moved here?”
“Yeah,” you shrugged, resting your head on the table. “I’ve got nothing going for me in Seoul, just heartbreak and Jungkook.”
“Okay, I think you have had enough tonight. Let’s go home,” Hoseok said, getting out of his seat and grabbing you by the arm.
After stumbling towards a taxi, you felt like it was going to throw up but Hoseok kept reassuring that you weren’t going to throw up. You eventually got to Hoseok’s apartment where you tripped over your own feet and fell flat on your face. Usually, you would’ve cried from embarrassment, but you were far too delirious and pissed to understand what the hell just happened moments ago.
You heard Hoseok release a loud sigh and sat on the group beside you. You rolled over onto you back, finding no reason to stand up. You began giggling out of nowhere as the thought of you falling was all too hilarious to you. You suddenly stopped laughing and stared at the white painted ceiling above you and it was just silence.
“Why doesn’t anyone love me?” you asked, muttering under your breath.
“What?”
“I just want to be loved, is that too much to ask?” You said sheepishly, your eyes closing slowly. “I just want to stop feeling this way. Feeling so unhappy with myself.”
You could heard words muttering in your year before you blacked out. There was no memories of that night. For once, you felt numb inside and the only feeling you had the next morning was a rough hangover and a bruise on your knee.
At age Twenty-one, you hoped to feel something again.
Age Twenty-Five.
It has been four years since you last spoke or saw Jungkook.
You were finally happy. Everything had changed since that night, and you were finally able to move on from Jungkook. Your heart didn’t long for him anymore, and it was finally healed from the heartbreak that you caused yourself four years ago. You had finally accepted their relationship and realised that you were the selfish on after these years. You had let your own heartbreak ruin you and Jungkook’s relationship that you build for five years.
You returned to Seoul a year ago because of a job that was offered through this big company that you couldn’t decline the offer. You didn’t think you would ever return back to Seoul because everything seemed like a distant memory which brought you so much pain in the past. As much as there was painful and sad memories in Seoul, there was also good memories that laced the city - especially when you were sixteen, the day you first met Jungkook.
You and Taehyung remained good friends, even though distance was a problem between you both. You spoke with him daily and eventually told him where you were living which made him visit every weekend. Soon, you both found your ways to each others heart and began to love each other. He was kind to you, and he was a person who was your shoulder to cry on when things got tough, that is when he found a place to your heart where you thought was broken the most.
I heard from Jungkook somedays from Taehyung as they were still best friends. He told me Jungkook got married two years ago, and he brought a larger house with Hana. You were glad that Jungkook was happy in his new married life, and you treasured every moment of your friendship. Even though you and Jungkook no longer spoke anymore, you could only wish him the best from a distance and maybe one day you will meet again.
Taehyung and I were happy. With the season’s changing more each week, the snow melted and the flowers started to bloom. The small stuffy apartment changed to a bigger apartment with Taehyung. He would make you laugh every day and made sure that your day was going okay.
Waking up beside Taehyung every morning was a blessing because almost four years ago, you felt like your heart would never heal from the heartbreak that you had from Jungkook. You believed that you would never love someone like you loved him because of the fear of rejection returning to you. You had been at the lowest point of your life at that time, the most shattered and heartbroken you ever felt. You almost lost yourself at one point, dwelling on your sadness every ticking moment four years ago. You had become a better person from the pain and landed a dream that you never wanted to wake up from.
Which brought you to this moment right now, where your legs were tangled up in soft cotton sheets with your sleeping boyfriend beside you, his hair a mess on the pillow and his cheeks pressed up against the pillow. Your fingers trailing over his face, brushing the hair away from his forehead and eyes flickering at his peaceful face.
“I know you are awake,” Taehyung whispered not opening his eyes.
“How can you tell?”
“I can feel you touching me,” he grinned, opening his eyes slowly.
“Don't make it sound creepy.” You whined, slapping his chest.
“I know you can't help looking at me, I'm so gorgeous.“ his laughing made you smack his chest again, trying to frown like you were annoyed. His hands sliding to your hands as he maneuverer you on his back and pulled you on top of him. The sun casted a glow against his cheek at an angle, making your insides flutter from how beautiful he looked.
You hair was shorter, falling in a messy manner over your face. His hands slipped from your hips down to your bare thighs, thumbs circling into the skin as he held onto you in the place of his lap, your knees bent onto the side. The blanket poled around your backside making goosebumps rise from the sudden burst of cool air hitting your skin.
"So pretty," he said softly, his eyes soft and squinted as they trailed over every inch of me. His eyes furrowed as his smile faded slowly, and a heavy sigh escaped his lips as he gripped onto you waist. "I love you. You do realise that?"
"I know. I love you too," You clarified, your fingers playing with the hem of his shirt.
"Jungkook wants to see you again," he said quietly. "It's been four years, and he's still sad without you in his life. I know you have avoided him for so long. Maybe just give him a chance."
“Okay,” you replied. “I’ll do it.”
"Really? That was easy." Taehyung said, suddenly frowning like something bad was going to happen. "Do you think you will still have feelings for him if you saw him again."
"Everything is in the past now, and I love you, not him." you reassured him. "If I saw him again, I wouldn't feel the same way about him. What's happened is gone, in the past. I have you now."
"Okay, I was being stupid then."
"You've always been stupid," you said, rolling your eyes at his persistence and then cracking a smile when he started to whine. His hands slowly found their way to the middle of your shirt, fingers attacking your sides as he sent you into a fit of laughter. Your body falling onto your side, and in a quick moment he was on top of you, pinning you down with his weight as he continued to tickle you.
"I'm sorry!" you squealed, the tears rolling down your face at how hard you were laughing, your hands gripped onto his arms.
"Say you love me and then I'll stop."
"I love you. I love you!" your laughter bellowed out as his hands stopped moving at your sides. He smiled as he rolled back beside you, laughing quietly beside you. You rolled onto you side to face him, trying to catching your breath from laughing. His eyes locked onto mine, and he smiled softly into a gentle expression.
"Let's get married."
"What?" you asked, eyes widening as he sat up, your own body following. You crossed your legs as you watched him reach over to the bedside table and opened the drawer. He pulled out something and held it in his fingers in front of you. Between his finger was a small silver ring with a diamond on the centre of it. Nothing fancy, just simple but effective.
"Not right now," he clarified, as he grabbed my hands and laced his fingers with mine. "But someday, when we were both ready. I want to make you mine."
The earnest looks on his features made you melt, and without a word. You nodded as he slipped the ring onto your finger.
From when I was sixteen, you wouldn't have imagined life like this. Even when you thought your heart would never heal, in place came Taehyung. The person who who cherished and loved when you were twenty-five. Although he wasn't your first love, he was someone you wanted to spend the rest of your life with. The only person you want to love.
"I love you," Taehyung whispered, pressing his lips onto yours and from that moment, you were certainly positive that this was were you exactly wanted to be, and you were happy.
"I love you always."
After a few months, you reconnected with Jungkook, promising to remain good friends and to meet once a week to catch up on your lives. It was nice to see him after four years, and nothing had changed between you two. It was like when we were sixteen and made a promise to never let go of each other.
You and Jungkook were able to let go of the past. He was living his married life, and you'd soon be starting yours with Taehyung. You were glad that when you looked at Jungkook, you didn't love him the way you used to; he was just your best friend since you were sixteen, full of happiness and hope between you both, and nothing seemed to worry you both anymore. You didn't keep anything from each other and kept your friendship going on a positive note.
It was perfect. He was perfect, and you were glad after nine years you were able to find someone you truly loved. You were both happy. You promised each other when the moment was right, he would say those four words.
And when he knew when the moment was right, you would say yes.
Twenty-five, Everything was truly perfect.
