Guys. The Phantom of the Opera is set in 1880. Christine is around 21 years old. If, after the events of the story, she were to live until about 90, she would have seen both World Wars. She would have seen the invention of the radio and the television. She could buy Superman comics for her grandkids.

She’d go from corsets and skirts with bustles all the way to the fashion of the the 50’s!

She could have seen The Lon Chaney Phantom movie in theaters. (If! She exsisted in a world where Gaston Leroux was actually reporting on strange events, not writing a novel.)

Idk why I’m thinking about this. I was just trying to take a nap. but man the turn of the century was crazy and the amount of technological and cultural shifts that happened between 1880 and 1950 would be absolutely WILD to live through.

This moment makes me so emotional. Christine is worried about falling under the Phantom’s sway again, who has publicly murdered and claimed responsibility for bringing down the chandelier. She is understandably frightened, and in the course of this scene she is insulted and even blamed for all the terrible events at the opera house. To make things worse, Raoul suddenly gets caught up in his idea to thwart the Phantom by using her to draw him out, while Christine is well aware that the Phantom will not be so easily beaten. She turns to Madame Giry for help, who is better able to speak up in the moment, only for all of the men in power to turn on her as well. It’s not until Christine melts down and screams in complete desperation that she manages to break through to Raoul, who even then does not truly listen to her. It’s no wonder the Phantom is able to hypnotize her so easily in the next scene, when he promises her the guidance and protection she has so recently been denied by others closest to her.
