THE GRASS WASN'T ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE. After Battle City, Serenity's mother was extremely controlling when it came to Serenity's social life. She wasn't allowed to date in high school. Living with her mother was stifling. The little freedom (at age 13) to see Joey and his friends was about the most male interaction she'd gotten. Serenity had a strict curfew of 6pm with her screened female friends until she graduated high school. She was often bullied by popular girls for being so monitored by her mother.

"Yeah! Let's go!" They finished their shopping and took a cab to her apartment.

It was a two bedroom apartment and one of the nicer, modern, more spacious ones in Domino City. Shiny wooden floors, a big living room once you walk in. She'd prepare them chicken soup, almost sukiyaki style in the adjacent kitchen. For now, she put her groceries away and packed Joey's groceries aside.

"Make yourself at home! You can even spend the night if you want to! I heard it's supposed to rain this evening." Serenity got to preparing their meal, leaving Joey to rest on the couch.

She leaps into his arms for an embrace like she always used to, feeling safe in the castle that was Joey's protective hold.

He was right. Despite that wretched mother of hers, they would always be a family. Always connected, no matter what, if not by blood or otherwise. His words moved her. She was his world? and she wouldn't be able to see the world without him. Then, they had a lot of lost time to make up for. She sniffles.

"Joey.. let's make up for lost time then. Come have dinner at my place.. please? It's.. so empty and lonely there by myself... I can make us chicken soup in the hotpot."

Her gaze dropped when Joey held her hands in his.

"Mom kept us apart almost our childhood, and I'll never forgive her for that... but, Joey.. you need to know the reason why." Serenity sighed deeply, her heart weighed heavy with sadness.

"She finally told me the truth after all these years.... Joey... we aren't... I mean, we're not.... we're not siblings. Not by blood. She isn't your mother, and your dad was never my dad. It hurts that she kept this from us for so long.... but I guess it explains why she tossed you away the way she did...."

Serenity's hands shook violently in his, and she couldn't help the tears that started to fall.

"It hurts so badly, Joey. I feel lost. Like she wanted to drive us apart and to make sure of it.. We have so much time to catch up on as it is, but why do I feel so sad?"

Where would they go from here?

He looks like he has no idea. She tried to hide the somber feeling that was washing over her with a weak smile.

"Not at all. I was just in a daze, that's all..." Of course, there was more to it than that. She was sitting on a huge revelation that would change their lives forever, and he had to know... but, not here. Not yet.

"Walk with me. We can shop together. I live not that far. How about you?, b--erm, Joey?"

It was hard not to call him big brother, but she had to get used to it. She babbled and went on about how she moved out of her mother's place and started working at KaibaLand as they progressed throughout the market.

The wheels of the shopping cart screeched faintly when she came to a stop in the produce section of the grocery store.

Serenity sighed. Here she was again. Another deposit in her account from her mother that she damn well didn't want, but she definitely and unfortunately needed.

Working at KaibaLand paid enough for food and other living expenses, but living paycheck to paycheck proved grueling when it was on a weekly basis. Her grip on the cart tightened in anger. Her hands shaking a bit.

She hated feeling so helpless without her mother. Serenity decided. She had to save her paychecks and someday break free from that lying woman. Given the recent revelation. She was determined to male this a reality.

Gathering ingredients for traditional chicken soup, she gathered them in plastic baggies one by one. All healthy veggies filled with nutrients. She needed her strength if she was going to work hard this week. She kept moving through the market until her cart gently collided with someone else's. Breaking from her thoughts, she looked up and quickly apologized.

"Oh! I'm so sorry! I didn't---Joey?" She met his gaze, faintly gasping at the sight of him. It's been a long while since they've seen one another... and she wondered then if he knew the truth... could he?! She had to find out. No matter what, they would figure it our from here.

"It's a bit fast paced during rush hour, but it's going great so far! And the costume? I like it a lot, too!" Serenity says with vivid honesty and a geniune smile. She didn't feel awkward at all, and she actually appreciated Mokuba's curiosity.

"The costume department really did tailor it perfectly to me! They layered my hair a bit too! To make me look more like Magician's Valkyria, I mean! She was one of Yugi's cards at one point, so some of the kids recognized me today!" Serenity beamed proudly, holding up a peace sign.

After a moment, She gave Mokuba a once over glance, noting his particularly casual outfit. She gave a somewhat bashful look hidden by her usual sweet disposition.

"I'm guessing you're doing some undercover work, huh? I hope I pass!" Serenity clasps both of her hands together.

"Though, I AM excited for shift rotations later in the week! Never a dull moment here at KaibaLand, it seems!"

She was forewarned by her manager that she'd be doing several different tasks as time goes on. Ticket Ushering was just one of them. With her looks being nearly uncanny to her character, she'd have lots to do to attract the theme park goers and of course, their wallets. In the meantime, she secretly counted down the minutes for her break. She was a kid at heart, and really wanted to ride the rides and win some Scapegoat plushies at the game booths.

It was a simple, mundane work task for tonight. Check the guests into the theme park. Being a ticket usher was easy, but she had to make sure to follow each greeting with a smile and a cute pose as she was trained to.

The theme park was full of staff dressed as duel monsters, after all. And Serenity was no exception. She was in full Magician's Valkyria attire. They had to make the experience very lifelike and exciting for the kids, and what was more magical than ushering ticket entry inside of a Magical Hat booth?

When her line of people had finally dispersed, Serenity looked beyond the neon attractions, over the sea of theme park goers and up at the moon that hid behind the colorful fireworks. She clenched her fists.

She was determined to save up enough money to eventually cut all ties with that wretched mother of hers. She just needed a bit more time...

The next thing she knew, a teenage boy was trying to get her attention! What a surprise! A much older Mokuba appeared! One of her bosses for that matter! But why was he here? Serenity blinked a few times, but smiled vividly. Surely she wasn't in trouble or anything, right? No pressure.

"Mokuba? Is that really you? It's been a while!" She had yet to even notice the tall man in the baseball cap not that far behind him.

Shizuka currently works full time as a ticket usher at KaibaLand. She is saving for college and wants to pay for it herself. Her mother already sends her monthly support as is, (for her apartment and expenses) much to Shizuka's disdain. She works in full cosplay on theme, dressed as Magician's Valkyria.

I want to make a serenity [shizuka kawai] blog, but my headcanon is that she and Jou/Joey are NOT blood related.

The reasoning canon is never disclosed, but why is her last name kawai and not katsuya? is it normal practice in Japan for a divorced woman to take away her child's surname AND give them her maiden name? where did kawai come from? this makes me believe that they indeed, have different fathers at the very least.

So, could that mean their mother had an affair? (It could be the very reason for jou and serenity's parent's divorce altogether) but, why would she send her own son to live with a drunk, unfit father? I would truly imagine that would mean their mother had no connection to jou/joey whatsoever if she could put her biological child in such a fucked up upbringing. It's easier to imagine their mother saying "he's YOUR son, you take him." also, his father could've been a drunk AFTER the divorce also.

POINT IS.. in my AU of the two being COMPLETELY unrelated by blood, I wouldn't mind shipping them. I have always wanted to make this muse for years, but I'm terrified of the possible hate I might get for adding this muse to the community. I would NEVER ship biological siblings. I still feel like I'd be treading taboo waters. I'm HEADCANON-ing their entire familial ties altogether. Is this okay? Am i wrong for wanting them to not be blood related when they are otherwise canonly siblings? Any thoughts? Feel free to send me anon asks, private dms, or public replies on this post.
