I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but more people should read incomplete/unfinished/in-progress fanfics.

I've noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say "and make sure to scroll down and click completed only" or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics 'because they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didn't realize this fic hadn't been updated since 2012'.

The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writer's WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isn't the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while they're ahead when they aren't garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If you're worried about reading something that hasn't been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.

Anyways, support your favorite fanfic writers by engaging with their WIPs.

“Roy?”

He hadn’t heard her call him that in years, and she had always maintained a professional aura between them, even throughout Ishval. Their shared childhood was so well swept under the rug that sometimes he wondered if she even remembered the scrawny teenage boy she’d once spent endless summers with.

“Hey,” he replied evenly, unsure of how exactly to approach her. Perhaps she was still in shock, and she certainly seemed confused.

“How are you feeling?” He asked, moving closer to the bed.

“My head is pounding, and I’m a little tired. I don’t remember what happened exactly…”

“You don’t remember?”

She shook her head, wincing when the action caused her pain. “Everything’s a little hazy… I don’t… was it something my father did?”

At that, Roy started, his eyes widening as he stared at his Lieutenant.

“Your father?” He asked gently, doing his best not to frighten her but the fact she’d brought him up at all worried him.

If there was another thing Riza Hawkeye did not talk about, it was her father.

She nodded innocently. “Isn’t he here?”

“Riza, your father died eight years ago.”

At one particularly low point he drunk calls Mustang apologising for what a handful he was. Roy is so amused that he’s not even mad about being woken up in the middle of the night. When he offers advice, Ed shouts about how he’s not even a parent and hangs up. Roy’s not offended in the slightest. He might even offer up ideas to Ed’s kids on how best to annoy their father.

In my headcanon, Ed’s oldest kid is a tomboyish daughter who favours him in many ways and he starts to realize what a handful he was in his youth.
