Clickity Clack, Please Chat Back - Spirit Communication - $10

✵ An outgrowth of a Techno Divination event I hosted in DaMa this reading uses recycled key caps from a keyboard to generate two pieces of information:  1) a few single word messages from an entity, spirit, or deity; and 2) a few hints or clues into the entity's nature, personality, and possible relation to you. ✵ The goal of the reading is to provide the querent with a message and enough information to begin their own process of researching and contacting the entity who left it.  The querent does not get to request a message from a specific entity - this is a "whoever calls" type of reading.

Scrying - General Purpose Reading - $10

✵ Also known as “seeing,” scrying is one of the oldest and most common methods of divination. I personally prefer to scry via a piece of obsidian, or water in a silver bowl or basin, in which I look for images while in a trance.  This method is a good all purpose method, with no real strong suite I have found.  Jack of all trades, master of none.

✵Also known as Tea Leaf Readings.  I get to enjoy a nice cup of tea then interpret the shapes and symbols the tea leaves make.  Readings will include a picture of said symbols for you to make your own interpretations as well.   I've found tea leaves to be very good for simple, quick, looks ahead, either for the day, the week, or the month coming up. Also effective for simple, more straightforward questions.

Then send the appropriate payment through my Ko-fi (also linked in my sidebar under "Payment"). Put the tumblr username you sent your request from in the payment message. I'll then add your reading to the queue to be done in turn. By default I will reply to request publicly, but if you would rather have a private reply please let me know and I can privately respond to your reading. **Caveat! I do not do mediumship or “godphoning.” I am happy to answer questions about spirits and spirit relationships, but I will not pass messages or speak for them. If I feel a question is too close to either of these I may ask you to re-phrase your question. If it cannot be rephrased I reserve the right to choose not answer that question. In these situations querents will have a chance to choose another question or to receive a refund.

I’ve gotta start incorporating my practice into my bullet journal because my bullet journal is consistently the only thing I will touch nearly everyday

I’m thinking I could make a bookmark to act as a placeholder but more importantly to keep important reminders, sigils, intents, etc that I want to see everyday. I could also set up a log in my weekly spreads for card pulls. I have more thoughts but not the brain power to put them in words

use the harvard spectral classification system to identify the color of the star you would like to work with - use these colors to represent the star of your choice in spellwork.

ideas for using colors to represent stars in spellwork:

[This is a fictionalized account of something that was communicated between myself and J, my familiar spirit. For storytelling / convenience / communication's sake, I will write it out as a conversation with words as if he were a person standing next to me, but the reality of it was less tangible and more... woo-woo. While dialog is fictional, the message that was communicated is accurate.]

I had my recently purchased copper pendulum in the pocket of my work jacket, and was fiddling with it in stolen moments in between stocking the walk-in cooler. I wasn't divining with it, just playing with it like a fidget toy. I had a theory about the conductivity of copper being good for communication with spirits, and judging by how apparent J was making himself, the theory was pretty sound.

"Some materials are easier for me to touch than others," he said. "Metal, stones, sticks, feathers, seeds..."

"Natural materials," I summarized.

"Sort of, but not always." It didn't exactly explain much, and my confusion was evident. So J continued with an explanation. "Show me what's in your pockets."

I pulled out two of my pocket trinkets, knowing which ones he meant. In one pocket, a small potato that had fallen onto the deli floor. A good thing to have on me to absorb unwanted 'bad vibes', of which there were many in retail. In the other pocket, a plastic d20. Not a nice one, just the generic blue one from the starter kit, so that I wouldn't be sad if it fell out of my pocket.

J 'pinged' the potato first. A nice spiritual reverberation, a sharp crack like a heeled shoe hitting a marble floor. Then he pinged the d20. A dull thud, more like a boot in mud.

"So... natural materials," I repeated.

Head shake. He indicated a wooden crate on the shelf I was stocking, then gave me an image of one of the plastic action figures on my bookshelf at home. "The action figure is easier to touch than the crate."

He'd lost me now. I was trying to figure out what the copper pendulum had to do with an action figure.

"It isn't necessarily the materials," he explained. "Natural material is one factor, yes. But narrative is also a material."

"So... my Caduceus Clay figure isn't magically resonant because he's made of plastic, but is beause he's also made of story?"

Somewhere in woo-woo land, I got the sensation of the little bell and woosh sound of a character level up in an RPG, and approval from J. The idea started clicking into place less like a slow conversation now and more like a file upload.

I had a plastic Yoda figurine that I found in my basement. He had long ago lost his robe and walking stick. The painted details on him had started to fade a long time ago. But I decided he was my Lucky Yoda, and I carried him in my pocket for every theatrical production I was part of all throughout college. When one of my cast mates was nervous about their role, I would pass Lucky Yoda off to them. 'Here, take Lucky Yoda. He'll help.' Soon enough, people would ask for him for comfort, or start asking about him during tech week to make sure I was going to remember to bring him. On days when I forgot him, the production was worse, even when I didn't mention to anyone that I hadn't brought him.

Was Lucky Yoda more or less powerful than a four leaf clover would have been? Common advice I had seen from other witchy sources said that the closer an item is to its natural state, the more powerful it will be. A tree has more power than a log which has more power than lumber which has more power than a picnic table. By this logic, Lucky Yoda should have been far removed from any sort of magic. But there was no denying that he had an effect on myself and my cast mates. (Whether or not this effect was magical or psychological is not something I'm here to debate. Believe me or don't. I'm not your priest.) A clover would have had more 'nature' magic to it, sure. But Yoda had story, and that story gave him power. J might not have been able to 'ping' Lucky Yoda as well as a clover just by nature of its materials, but the narrative of him was something that J could ping.

The ethereal concept of 'story' seemed to have a more concrete physical substance in the world of spirits. And I am reminded of the folklore that angels or fairies cannot be creative, and that the ability to create is uniquely human, a little spark of the divine in us. And in the world of spirits where everything is intangible, why wouldn't the intangible nature of a story be just as concrete as everything else in their world?

"Now you're getting it."

I found myself standing stock-still in the cooler at work, staring blankly at a half-unloaded cardboard box of packaged soup while the vaguely blob-like form of a spirit bounced happily at his student's understanding.

I shook my head off and got back to unloading. "So... story: good conductor. Copper: good conductor. Plastic: bad conductor."

"Plastic without care and creativity, yes." J gave me the image of a flimsy, shitty, plain dollar store pencil box. One of those ones where the plastic didn't form correctly, so there's little bits of sharp plastic that you can break off of the edges. "If there's anything you don't want me to touch, you can put it in one of these. But don't put stickers on it, otherwise it starts to get easier."

"I think I get it. Thanks! Here, would you like some soup?" I place a plain plastic container of soup up on the shelf.

"Ha ha."

Based on your own definitions of when spellcasting starts, how long does it take you to cast the majority a typical spell?

Like if you find the conception and development of a spell to be an active part of working the magic, or the gathering of materials, etc., then that's your start point: but basically choose your own starting point however it makes the most sense to you.

A "typical" spell is the framework you usually use, or the kind of spell you perform most often on average.

"The majority" of a typical spell being the bulk of the work; so for example if I made an enchantment that took an hour, but then I fed it once a day for 3 days, I'd say the spell took an hour. But it's whatever, you must label it according to your whims and desires.

I know the definitions are going to be pretty messy on this one, but I'm deathly curious.

"Spell" being any working of magic.

"My advice:

For a moment, take humans out of the picture. Let’s say humans never existed. Because this isn’t Christianity- this wasn’t all created for us because we’re some tragically bipolar deity’s children.

So no humans. And Existence is this big… swirling ocean… of different forces. And, per animism, they have some degree of sentience. Some are working with each other, some are in a kind of hermetic polarized pair (hot and cold), some are in contention (like the Greek gods vying and scheming against each other). We call those big sentient forces gods.

And there are, also per animism, smaller consciousnesses. For example, this ONE river has a spirit that’s a kind of child of the spirit of “all rivers everywhere”. The spirit River, with a capital R.

So here’s the thing.

Let’s say you’re The Spirit of Shenandoah Forest. And you’ve got this complicated situation on your hands. And you reach out to the various spirits of the forest for help, but they all basically say “I can’t do all that, all I know how to do is (their domain) stuff!” So, crap. Where can you find a being that’s not dedicated to being a specific thing like a tree, or a river, or a hill? Because they just know how to be a river or whatever.

Boom. Humans.

Humans’ domain, if you think about it, is changing things. We change one energy into another. We change trees into buildings. We change dreams into music. We change food into poop. We change loose energy into magic. We change poverty into prosperity. We ourselves change youth into age. And we ourselves are so changeable too- if you plunk a penguin in the desert, it dies. You plunk humans in the desert and they adapt and thrive. We are “changers”.

So it’s my own personal perspective that us humans are kinda like “outside agents” in Existence. We’re the “Wild Draw 4 card”. And when gods/spirits need that flexibility, we’re what they reach out to. We’re kinda their jack-of-all-trades.

So how bananas is it to pretend you can pick ONE force out there as “your thing”. Or one god as “your god”. That’s like your Craftsman multitool saying “sorry, but from now on, I’m only going to be a pair of pliers. I’ve got all these other tools here, but you can just suck it up and twist in that screw with your fingernail or something, because I’m not doing it. I’ve decided it’s not my thing.” And they get mad, and we get smited, and all kinds of havoc goes down. The myths and legends are full of those situations. And it greatly cheapens our value to the gods and spirits.

I think it’s MUCH better to ask yourself “so what do I believe in? What do I want to see more successful, and healthier in Existence?” And maybe the answer is love, or truth, or learning, or brotherhood. Hell, maybe it’s warfare and violence. But once you’ve set your sights on a personal goal, you can then say “okay, so what gods and spirits are also working to further this domain?” and look for ways to leverage your flexibility and multitasking to help them. Then you’re not just this mopey little bitch asking for a handout all the time, you’re a useful ally who is on the same team.

I was recently part of a really outstanding ritual for Lughnasadh, and my role was to raise a crossroads and establish a ritual gateway to the underworld for a kind of guided meditation ritual. And when I got started, I said “Hekate, I’m about to make a crossroads and a liminal space that involves death and necromantic energies. I think that all of that aligns with you and yours. If it pleases you, then I invite you to come and work with me as I do this”. And the…. Vibrancy of that power, and its result, was just so so much more than it ever used to be when I’d whine to the gods about what I wanted them to do for me.

So that’s my advice. Don’t “pick a god”. It’s dumb. Think about what’s important to you, find allies, and work to support what you believe in with flexibility and dynamism."

Hi, I hope you are doing well. I used to like creating sigils but I stopped when I started questioning where the energy of the sigil comes from. maybe it's stupid but I was worried all the energy of the sigil would be attached to me and would drain me in a way. I run on low energy most of the time, this is why it worried me. Would you mind sharing some methods to charge or activate a sigil ? In your experience is the sigil an egregore of it's own or is it always attached to the person who created it ?

Hey sorry for the long wait on the response!

I personally don't think a spell is always actively attached to you energetically unless you have purposefully made it do that.

As for how to charge sigils, there are a variety of things. You can do some focused energy work to put energy into it or you could use an outside source like I tend to do.

I usually charge a crystal in the sunlight or moonlight and then place the sigil under said crystal. I generally like the physical aspect of the crystal which is why I do it. One of my friends suggests using other natural phenomena such as rainbows and storms, another suggests the use of active energy (burning/ripping/etc) or passive energy (under a burning candle/in the sun/etc). Another suggests using offerings as you would for a spirit (food, drink, incense, candles, etc).

I also will do digitally drawn sigils and have them up on the screen as I charge my phone so that the electricity charges the sigil.

Is there a good way to involve dice into the craft? I am a big fan of DnD and have a bunch of dice sets which I really love.

Also I kinda followed yalls advice and feel a lot better now, meditating was the best for the drain.

Do you have tips or setting up altars and stuff? I keep finding conflicting resources and while I have a direction in mind Id like some tricks and tips.
