i think the best bit of worldbuilding by far in the mass effect trilogy is the lore that went into the quarians. from the beginning, you're immersed in their culture and their customs. tali's only dialogue in the first game is her talking about her people, and even in the other two games it doesn't extend too far outside of that. and for good reason. you get an in-depth look into their economy, their way of life, their religion. you learn about their creation of the geth and their subsequent exile from the galaxy. you visit the quarian fleet far before you visit other homeworlds, and even when you do they're burning to the ground. the quarians are uniquely flushed out in a way that asks you to keep digging, keep learning about a culture.

and then there's kal'reegar, from galveston, texas. he only smokes camels and drinks bud light. his hobbies include lawn care, smoking meats, and watching that son of a gun dak prescott lead the cowboys to the superbowl.

I was looking through some game dialogue stuff and somewhere in the same conversation as "We're a team, Garrus. There's no Shepard without Vakarian, so you better remember to duck."

Apparently Shepard can say

"Shepard and Vakarian, storming heaven... I guess there are worse ways this could end."

This post reminded me of my question of how often Shepard calls Garrus "Vakarian" outside of the bottle shooting scene - the answer is never, not counting the indirect "no Shepard without Vakarian," the "Primarch Vakarian" dialogue, and using his full name in the bottle shooting scene "I love you" and a couple of times in ME2.

have been looking out for what garrus calls shepard throughout the three games since this post and here we go!!!

ME1: always “commander” with the exception of battle banter.

ME2: “commander” with outsider present, “shepard” in private or in the presence of other squadmates

ME3: i don’t think he has ever called shepard “commander” (also note: my human girlfriend, sweetie and love of my life in citadel dlc)

and now we compare it with wrex and tali:

i didn’t pay much attention in ME1 at first but if memory serves me well:

wrex: “shepard” all the way

tali: a mix of “commander” and “shepard” in ME1, then “shepard” all the way

i just think it’s a really neat detail.

ofc wrex wouldn’t give a damn about those stupid human rules and formalities. he respects shepard but it’s not because of the title, but slowly earned.

garrus respects shepard. due to the turian militaristic culture that’s so deeply ingrained in him even if he’s a “bad turian”, he sticks to “commander” at first because that’s…well…the chain of command. but as their bond grows stronger, whether platonic or romantic, the personal connection causes him to use a more intimate way to address shepard.

then finally tali who also respects shepard from day 1. she’s been isolated on the flotilla for her whole life until her pilgrimage. she’s just a kid who’s experiencing the world for the very first time, so she’s scared of making mistakes especially when communicating with other species. sticking to “commander” sounds right to her.

quarians aren’t always being treated kindly. they were stigmatised. especially with what happened to her before joining shepard — being hunted down by saren’s assassins, rejected to land on illium, called “suit-rat” on the citadel, and more, she didn’t expect kindness on a human ship. but she’s welcomed by shepard and some of the crew.

(i’d also like to point out that when ash is expressing her doubts about aliens on board, she specifically mentions “wrex and vakarian”, not tali, which is a bit funny considering tali is the one most invested in the ship’s technology.)

as a naive girl who just left the flotilla for the very first time, and got treated like shit the entire time, i imagine she’d be quick to trust someone if they show kindness.

with the not-so-militaristic culture of hers, she feels comfortable switching to “shepard” quite frequently even in ME1.

(also the markings are supposed to be for the turian's "colony of origin" so they probably wouldn't work like that anyway)

when andromeda came out with castis and his markings people were all pissed he didn’t have the same markings as garrus, but if garrus’s mom had appeared in-game and didn’t have the same markings no one would have batted an eye. turians don’t need to be patriarchial guys!! we don’t need to do this to ourselves!!!!!

Question for people that have played BG3: what subclass fits Karlach's canon story the best? I'm on my first playthrough and from what little I know from fic Wildheart seems unlikely (as useful as Speak With Animals might end up being) but Berserker seems kind of ~mean to her (violence and disregard for herself in battle when supposedly she's a sunshine? :( ) but I've never seen Wild Magic brought up in fic but idk maybe it's a close analogue for her heart going wacko sometimes?
