When I was drawing Sophia, I was having a rly hard time deciding what pose to give him. I tried poses for a headshot, then a bust, then fullbody, and I liked that, so I tried out like 4 or 5 different full body poses. Eventually I landed on this one which I liked, so I went with it. Surprisingly, I didn't hate my lineart like I usually do. Probably because I use a marker brush which gave it more varied line weight. I also really liked how the diamond shapes on Sophia's cheeks look like teeth, and I wanted to emulate that. However, when I tried drawing it at first, it just looked like diamonds on his cheeks, and not like teeth. It took a lot of small tweaks for it to finally looks kinda like teeth, but I like how it came out. I did also have trouble trying to make the body markings look like they were glowing, which I think was the intended effect in the reference drawings. At first, they were just solid color, but it looked super plain, so I added this sandy/cloudy effect in them and I liked that much better. I'm not very good at rendering hair, something I still need to work on... Doing the hair in this piece was a bit tedious but I think I got somewhere decent with it. Thank god for the smudge tool. I accidentally gave him two right feet on accident at some point when I was trying to figure out the feet LOL Overall, super fun to draw, awesome character design, and I'm glad I was able to make something with him that I'm proud of!

Personality:

As they deal with the loss of gems quite often, Marekanite has been built to feel dulled emotions compared to the average gem, helping "unnecessary" emotional connections to gems. As a result, they are often quite stoic. However, they are quite interested in organic life, fascinated by how "alive" every part of an organic being is.

I had been thinking about what death is like for gems. Of course, that would be shattering. Then, I began thinking about the people who's jobs are to deal with death: morticians. What if there was a mortician-like gem? That's how I came up with Marekanite.

My decision to make them "marekanite" came from researching gems that were representative of death. I found this gem called the apache tear, named after the Native American Apache tribe. If not already obvious, shape of their gem is a nod to the name "apache tear". "Marekanite" is the more technical term given to this gem, which I felt was more fitting to the official name of the character.

I wanted to incorporate some of the Apache tribe's clothing into the design so added the tassels and a patterned cloth on Marekanite's back. The pattern on the cloth is meant to resemble the cracks or shards of a shattered gem, referencing Marekanite's purpose. I designed them based on the classic shape of a ghost, hence the round hunched back and wavy shapes. If it wasn't obvious, I had taken some inspiration from the character the One Who Waits (otherwise known as Narinder) when designing the face veil. He is a character from the game Cult of the Lamb, which I had starting becoming OBSESSED with last year, who is the god of death, very on-theme for Marekanite.

I had debated on scrapping this character because I couldn't figure out how to make them work in the Steven Universe... erm, universe. Marekanite has the ability to sense life within a gem. However, there was one extremely major problem with this in the context of the Steven Universe story... Pink Diamond's shattering. Since Pink Diamond had used fake shards to stage her shattering, the use of a marekanite's life-sensing ability would've immediately ruled out that Pink was truly shattered once the "shards" were analyzed. I was bummed because the life-sensing ability was something I really wanted the character to have. HOWEVER, as I thought more about it, I figured out how to make it work. Since Pink Diamond was "shattered" on the battlefield, having been witnessed by several gems, no one would feel the need to check that the shards were real. After all, they'd seen it with their own eyes. Of course those were Pink Diamond's shards. Therefore, no marekanite would be requested to check whether or not the shards were legit, meaning the story of Steven Universe can continue as is. I was so happy when I figured that out and could keep marekanite the way they were hehehehe.

A few weeks ago, I had been listening to the song Cabinet Man by Lemon Demon, and I couldn't help but imagine this character who's 90% underbite and wavy hair. The more I listened, the more my brain worked and soon, I had this whole character in my head. I made a few initial sketches but eventually landed on some I like, which are the ones you see here. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I wanted him to look, playing with shapes and clothing and color a LOT. This might even be prone to change in the future if I draw this guy more but I'm pretty content with the current design.

Lore:

This is the Robert Picsole, or commonly referred to by others as the Cabinet Man. His first name, Robert, which means "bright frame", is taken literally, as a computer can be considered a "bright frame." His last name, Picsole, is a play on the word pixel, as he is very skilled in computers. He is an arcade technician whose job is primarily to fix and maintain the arcade machines. He gained the name "Cabinet Man" because his office/workspace is a quite small and cramped room within the arcade, like a cabinet of sorts. As of 2025 (though don't expect the time of this universe to follow the time of ours), he is 27 years old, having been born on June 4th, 1998. I chose June 4th because 6/4 is a reference to 64, as in 64 bits. Also, his personality aligns well with the Gemini zodiac.

Appearance:

He is skinny with pale skin, as he spends most of his time in his cramped office doing his work. His hair is meant to resemble that of a lightning bolt, a nod to his work in electronics. He also has stitches on his pants that resemble lightning bolts as well. He as square buttons that are a reference to the square pixels of a screen. In his transformed design, he keeps his zig-zaggy hair. He has gold-metallic gloves where he can produce electricity/lightning from, since gold is extremely conductive. His smile has become pixelated, a nod to the pixelated games found in arcades. His arms/sleeves have a sort of blue circuit pattern, showing the electricity that flows through him.

Personality:

He's a trickster, often messing around with his coworkers and arcade visitors if he's in the mood, playing light pranks of them or telling jokes. He's always smug, not taking anything too seriously. While he often chooses to work alone, he does not turn down company. However, he's not afraid to cuss out anyone who disrespects him or anyone he cares about. He's quite sharp with his tongue if he needs to be, often winning arguments and conflicts without getting physical.

Backstory:

I don't currently have a solid backstory for him, but I do have a general idea. In some accident, an active arcade machine he's working on, circuit boards and wires exposed, falls onto him. As he's electrocuted, he becomes infused into the machine, giving him these supernatural abilities.

Abilities:

He can transform from his normal human form to his electrical form by getting shocked by a significant voltage of electricity. Small shocks like static don't transform him. He can transform back into human form by choosing to release his electrical form into conductive material, leaving behind only his human body. In his electrical form, he can absorb and project lightning from anywhere on his body, but he often finds it most convenient to use his fingers. He can travel through anything conductive as fast as electricity would. He's able to transform and exaggerate his body to certain lengths.

There's this phobia I had heard of a few years back, I think it was called thalassophobia, and it was the fear of large/deep bodies of water. I tried my best capture that feel with the wide perspective and big worm. I haven't really practiced perspective like this very much but it was still fun to try out. I've also never drawn something underwater looking up to the surface before so that was a nice challenge as well.

Sorry it's been a while since my last post. When I posted the previous two, it was during my school's spring break so I had time to complete them, but since it ended, school and life had been keeping me busy. Anyways, here's the new piece! I'm fairly proud with how it turned out, though I think I miiiiight have gone a little overboard with it? Frankly, it was really annoying to render like 15 cats. Maybe I shouldn't have gone as hard in the colors and lighting as I did but i couldn't help myself! Plus, I got a ton of practice rendering fur, which ive never really done before. The lighting was also really fun to do. Oh, and yeah, I DID trace the cats, but for the purposes of this piece, I think it was necessary. Plus, I CAN NOT draw a photorealistic cat, even WITH a reference lol

I'm thinking about a making more of these now so look for that in the future. Anyways, this one was fun to do! I originally just drew it like normal, with a glowing line going through her face, but then I remembered that her body was literally falling apart while she was getting destabilized, so I thought "would it be cool if her face was also falling apart?" So that's what I did. I think it adds a slightly more graphic twist the original scene, but that fits the point of this series so I went for it.

I came across a tiktok that was talking about all the trauma Steven went through, and this clip of from episode Steven and the Stevens came up, where Steven was confronted by all the other Stevens, and then that one Steven destroyed the hourglass and all the Stevens turned into sand before his very eyes (wow, a lot of "Steven"). When I really thought about it, I realized it must've been horrifying to watch yourself die, and I can see why it must've been traumatic as hell for him.

I wanted to reimagine the scene in a darker, more grim way, a way that really highlighted the deadly elements of it. I decided to do this in a more realistic art style, mimicking a scene from a movie to bring out the drama of it (captions included!). I also went with darker lighting and a cooler tone, almost giving it a zombie-like vibe, since death is often associated with the cold.

Evidently, this piece is pretty rough. The lines are kind of messy, it's not really rendered thoroughly, and the background is just a couple of colors blended together. However, the thing is, I'm thinking about making this into a series. Perhaps I'll draw other traumas Steven endured throughout the series. It's definitely not because I'm kind of lazy and intimidated by doing a fully rendered realistic art style.
