She wanted to step towards her, to greet her as a friend, even if that wasn't what they truly were, but she didn’t move a step. Their eyes met, just for a second. Gaara’s eyes widened just a little before another politician stole her attention away again. Right, Gaara was here both as Naruto’s friend and as a Kazekage. She had to spend time with them as well.

There was a new yet so familiar feeling that touched her heart and tightened in her chest. It was loneliness. For the first time in a long time, she was alone.

Lee wanted to be like her friends. She wanted to walk over to Gaara and hug her tightly and call her her beloved. Gaara would hug her back, and ask her what took her so long. Gaara would excuse herself from the group and walk away hand-in-hand with Lee. They would kiss seconds after Lee shuts the door to her apartment, and show Gaara how much she misses her through kiss marks left on her skin.

But they couldn't do that, they weren't like other couples.
