What's kinda unsettling to me is that in the 1999 adaptation, there is that scene in episode 17 where some of the applicants are shown in their rooms and stuff and one of those scenes features Ponzu in that bathtub and one of the snakes is eyeing her.

Tbh you can see it however you want but personally, I think that this scene was quite unnecessary to some amount, especially if you think about it how in a later episode, where Tonpa is describing Ponzu to Leorio, he gets those flashbacks and one of it is that bathroom scene. Like how does he even get a flashback of a scene he never witnessed, especially such a private one. And – in my opinion – it doesn't get better if you think about how he had this (slightly) flirty behavior towards her (also while she was unconscious) (I'm talking about the English DUB and how he kept calling her princess and stuff)

Okay I know that such behavior happens all the time in the world and older anime do feature this more than modern ones (at least what I've experienced so far), but still...

yk I'm thinking about Ponzu's death to this day. It's not only a gruesome death but also a (in my opinion) really disrespectful scene in general. I never really thought about the disrespectful aspect, until I was rewatching bungou stray dogs recently and there is that scene in the 15 arc, where Dazai keeps on shooting a body even though he already killed the person. Chuuya then gets annoyed and interferes with "What's the use in shooting a dead body?" (or at least something like that).

Every person has their human dignity and even when they die, this dignity fully remains. This basically also applies to fictional characters, since they're people as well. So I think by letting the chimera ant keep on shooting Ponzu, the scene was not only gruesome to the eye, but also hurt her dignity in a way it shouldn't have been.
