While I was in Sweden to examine some of their medieval nalbinding, I had the chance to sit down with Återskapat and my friends Nele and Ingela and have a good long chat about nalbinding. You can join us at the table here: https://aterskapat.libsyn.com/terskapat-103-nalbinding?fbclid=IwY2xjawHeL1hleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHbPNT6aDBrFHyFa225JfSlQlkfG9Gas4p_8lyC_Pl_MCtL7PmX5PIVNMoA_aem_lYoAREO9yHImj_0PpqeqiA

Knee-length nalbound stockings have been extremely rare in the archeological record. But while I was examining the medieval Nidaros Stocking in April, I learned of another medieval knee-length stocking! This week's Nalbound Object of the Week is a 15th century stocking from Helgeandsholmen in Stockholm, Sweden. Excavated between 1978-1980, it was recently sent to Stockholm's Archaeological Collection […]

A friend of mine, Nele Nuutinen, is studying crafting science at University of East Finland, and her bachelor's thesis is about nålbinding instruction books. (She's not quite sure what the topic of her master's thesis is going to be, but it will be about #nålbinding as well.) If you #nalbind, Nele hopes you might find few minutes of your time to answer a short survey about the printed sources you have used to learn to #nålbind. The survey is open until second of March.
Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask her. She would be especially glad if you could share the link to other groups where nalbinders may be found so she can get a wide range of sources. The survey's in English, but is looking for information in any language.

A post about our trip to see the Shroud of a Woman Wearing a Fringed Tunic at the MET with thoughts on how to wear your “Coptic” socks. Also a teaser about upcoming research into the traditional usage of Nalbinding in Central Africa.

Just published the recording and supplementary material for my NESAT XIV presentation, But it looks like... methods for differentiating non-woven looped structures, that was presented on August 25th, 2021. It's a close look at the differences between the structure and the techniques, secondary construction details that can be determinative, and the confusions that can occur based on surface textures. https://nalbound.com/2021/09/03/but-it-looks-like/

I’ve been testing out construction theories regarding pickups (based on an extant pair in the V&A Inv 2085&A-1900) & Z-plied yarn in S-cross (roughly based on Inv 1243-1904) in Roman Era Egyptian cross-knit nalbound socks using some lovely madder dyed yarn. They are almost done. Just the overlapping slit ankle section to go. Gauge is a smidge too large, but will make nice winter socks.

My most recent nalbinding project. Styled after the Romano-Coptic socks from Egypt and surrounding regions. Cross-knit looping stitch.
