If anyone has ever told you that yarn isn't sentient they're LYING because not only is it sentient it's EVIL and it CHOSES TO TANGLE ITSELF SO IT'S HARDER TO WORK WITH

listening to podcasts or audiobooks while i work on my silly little fiber crafts really makes me feel like i'm engaging in the ancient human tradition of shared storytelling while we work

I used the woven band for my new bag. The bag itself is done by nålbinding. The band is used to secure the edges. I made two mistakes during weaving but fortunately they will be nearly invisible in the end. Now I need to make another band for the front. I am still not sure which pattern I want to use.

Saw a post where someone talked about only having one project going at a time, and it baffled me--I always have like 3-5 projects going at any given time with no problem. So I'm curious:

Me: “Oh, it’d be so cool to make my own socks! Oh, but I apparently bought the wrong length circular needles.”
Knitting Goblin, living in my brain with $0/month rent: “Ooh! Double pointed needles! You prefer metal needles and they’re shiny!”
My WIPs: “Or you could finish the scarf, bag, cat toy, or doll before you start a new hobby.”
Crochet Goblin, somehow paying even less rent: “Or you could try tapestry crochet? Perhaps an amigurumi dog?”
Nälbinding: “Didn’t you want to try me, too?”
Embroidery Hoop: “She hasn’t even looked at me in months! Wait your fucking turn!”
Mending: “Oh, she thinks about me daily. Patches. Embroidering over the little holes. SHE HASN’T EVEN ATTEMPTED.”

Scrap Along 2025
Hello. Scrap Along 2025 begins later this week on Friday, February 14, and runs 30 days through the Ides of March (March 15). Just make something from leftover yarn and post it on social media with the tag #ScrapAlong2025
The idea for this grew out of comments left back and forth with Hidden Pond Yarns when I posted about being inspired by knitters to make a scrappy Musselburgh hat. Katya in turn is inspired to try scrappy knitting herself, and it reminded me of how much of my life is the result of other people's participation.
Right now, of course, a lot of people have the urgent, immediate need to piece their lives back together from what's left of family, friends, jobs, home, food, healthcare, their very identities. It makes the idea of a spontaneous project that's one of a kind and absolutely gorgeous as much an act of defiance as it is community and creativity.
If you use yarn to crochet, embroider, felt (I made a list) knit, latch hook, macrame, nalbind, needlepoint, tat, weave, and any other yarn craft I left out, you can scrap along.
Post your results and progress with the tag #ScrapAlong2025. Tag the dyer if you can, and the yarn shop where you made the purchase. They should know we're using their yarn. Add alt tags to your photos. It's important for accessibility and searching.
But most of all, have a great time.
Thanks.

I finished my new bag. It's done with nålbinding combined with tablet weaving. The holder for the belt was done by crocheting for sturdiness. I will add a wooden button and a leather band so that I can close it. I just need to find the right wood for a button
#nalbinding#tablet weaving#medieval#crocheting#my stuff#it's so much bigger than my old bag#abd so much more beautiful

The non-yarn items I got at NY Sheep & Wool! A Nålbinding needle, a Lucet and some fiber for spinning. The braid on the left has 20% yak hair in it so I'm excited to see how it spins!

Knitting a freehand bag and started wondering how often people even use patterns, anyway. So--how often do you use a pattern when you make things ? This include knitting/crochet/sewing/weaving/nalbinding/bobbin lace/tatting/etc but also things like woodworking, cooking, and baking. If you want to just pick the thing you do most often that's fine.
I personally do not use patterns as I find them far more confusing than just figuring out the construction of an item and simply making it. I do very occasionally browse ravelry for inspiration but have downloaded maybe 2. In the 5 or so years since I joined. And have followed exactly 1, which I modified every single aspect of. In my defense, dyslexia.
#poll#knitting#crochet#weaving#tatting#sewing#quilting#nalbinding#bobbin lace#cooking#baking#theres just SO MANY patterns out there and i kind of dont understand why... who is using them ???#they are so hard to follow even when written well#i get that thats dyslexia talking and not true for most people but it still baffles me#i also dont follow cooking/baking recipes but in a different way#the issue for crafting patterns is that i cant read and so i cant figure out what the hell im supposed to do#but recipes are usually lists and dont have tons of abbreviations and dozens of steps#so i can kind of read recipes but i just like doing my own thing and also have been burned by recipes before#so even if i try following the recipe as hard as possible i will inevitably change some things#like what about the whimsy. also i will use a butter wash after taking this out of the oven i dont care that it says eggs#and while i dont do legos anymore i was the same with that too. we got a kit once and my sister loved following each step#oh my god. the worst. i would covertly make other things with the remaining pieces while she assembled the thing#i do think that were i not dyslexic i would still not follow patterns#like i said i just prefer to do my own thing most of the time

Been curious how a nalbound bag would go, and a few weeks ago I was gifted the perfect yarn to play with. Turned out great, I think! The shoulder strap and white stripes are… appliqué? Made post-facto but attached as they were made. Haven’t settled on if I want a button or a toggle. HMMMMM Don’t know all the vocab- Finnish 2+2. Most connections were F1. Connection loops for the stripes/strap were picked up after the +2 of the stitch but before the stitch was finished.
#Handmade#fiber arts#string craft#Nalbinding#wool#artists on tumblr#I’m leaning antler toggle I think? An antler button would look rad but I think all I have are pretty rough. Don’t want to snag the wool.
