If I had a nickel for every time European colonization introduced a pathogen that a continent had no immunity to, thereby destroying civilizations across that entire continent, and leaving the land so empty that the resulting springback of wildlife would lead later European explorers to declare the place a pristine wilderness, and formulate their ecological theory based on the faulty assumption that the land had always looked this way -- I would have two nickels. In the days leading up to Saturday's protests, I was very worried about Trump's response. I'm sure many were. He promised military force. There was that sherrif in Florida who promised to kill people. There was so much speculation about Trump and his goons using mass protests as pretexts for Sending Out The Guard and Declaring Martial Law, cracking down upon us all, increasing his power, sweeping away Democracy.

And on top of all that, Trump was going to have this big military parade in the nation's capital. He was going to flex his muscle, impose his will upon the helpless people of the city, make himself look like a fearsome foe who could crush anyone. He even got (carefully selected) members of the U.S. military to cheer him, breaking their ancient tradition of political neutrality. June 14, 2025, would be the day that our beloved Democracy was pushed over the edge and downhill by the Bully In Chief.

And then...

The protests were attended in the millions, they went off without violence anywhere besides Los Angeles, and Trump's vaunted parade was a dinky janky snoozefest. That even Trump fell asleep at.

What I'm taking away from yesterday is that Trump actually has all the fascist power and pageantry of a wet fart.

What I am also taking away from this is that if Trump's actions had actually faced genuine united opposition from Congress back in January and February, or even staunch opposition from a single party, he would have folded like a house of cards and we wouldn't be here right now. Trump doesn't even have a shred of what it takes to impose his will upon people united against him. The only reason he's got away with as much as he has is because Congress hasn't done jack shit to stop him. It's currently taking a nation of millions to do what Congress could have done easily.
