valjean grew up farming and pruning trees with his bulbasaur. his anger forged in prison is represented by his arcanine, and his second, more water-filled stint by his poliwrath. his time as mayor, partly in hiding, is when he acquires his mimikyu, and later takes on fantine’s marowak. oddish comes along as he raises cosette, but he doesn’t see fit to evolve her until javert comes crashing into his life again
