This is why countries do floodplain surveys like FEMA'S riskmap (https://www.fema.gov/flood-maps/tools-resources/risk-map), sometimes it is not that obvious where the floodplain is and how it will change until you model it. Especially as climate change increases how destructive storms are it's incredibly important to check how future events could wipe out existing structures and how soon. If you currently don't know what floodplain is around you I recommend checking what agency controls regulations and taking a look (Floods aren't the only studied hazards so take a look for others too)
Aside from just damages to structures though I really wish more people recognized:
1. Channelized flood ways like this (especially concrete lined) increase water temperatures and can decrease dissolved oxygen (makes it so fish can't breathe well through these stretches and decreases water quality for fish downstream too plus you can get more algae growth in these conditions where not much else thrives). This means these not only hurt people during flooding events that may become more common/severe, but also their local ecology *all the time*
2. Channels like this generally cause water to move faster (elimination of turns/banks/eddies/slope variations) which could decrease standing water in some cases, but can also increase erosion (faster water has more energy to carry more and larger particles of soil). So the community loses more material even at lower flooding events
3. The intention behind these channels are often complicated and typically well intentioned when they were/are constructed. Civil engineers and regulators are constantly learning from past decisions to figure out what serves the needs of people best for their circumstances. People have always wanted to live near the water because (in case this wasn't obvious) we need it to live and most everything we do needs water access. Cities generally can't just not be near a water source without having to make large investments in getting water to them anyways and even if there isn't a large body of water or river nearby rainfall can be enough to have a devastating flood on an unprepared area. This means engineers/regulators look for ways to mitigate risks to what we already have near rivers and try to maximize habitable space by waterfronts. The thing about streams though, is they do not want to stay following the same path forever, they want to wriggle around the face of the earth like snakes having a seizure. Being unable to predict how they move or when means being unable to communicate hazards and plan buildings nearby that can last a century (commonly you don't want to have to have to do repairs/rebuild important infrastructure/buildings within a shorter timeframe than that). So seeing risks to historic structures, existing communities, and emergency facilities there was some logic behind "lets make a channel so the water can move out of the city center faster and on a predictable path we can build around." If that works for a city, great, but it's got risk factors that Civil Engineers, Regulators, and Clients (whoever is funding it) have to consider

#long post#woops meant to keep this short but I am incapable#flood risks are important though#know what your risks are because it can save you in an emergency#like risks for even little things too#have an emergency evacuation plan not just for fires

This post reminded me of Innuendo Studio's Alt-Right Playbook series. Specifically the series has the video "Why Don't You Respond to Criticism?" and it describes how disingenuous people can try to ask these kinds of questions to a person to derail any conversation, control the narrative around a person, and sew discord where maybe none existed. While I may not 100% agree with the series, it does seem like one worth recommending to anyone interested considering the current political parties that have gained power. In this case though might not be what was happening with OP, but I've been keeping an eye out for this around other figures in my sphere of influence and wanted to ramble. If you go to watch that series though start at the beginning because it has a decent amount if disclaiming/explanation
“can you address this questionable post you made in 2013?” “when will you address this thing you’re in support of that I don’t agree with?” “why are you silent about x?” “I’m waiting for you to make a statement”
my brother in Christ, I am going to hold your hand when I tell you this, this place is called the internet, and while you’re here, you’re going to see Things from strangers that you disagree with or outright hate. because not everybody will share your beliefs. not everyone will agree with you. and you can’t demand an explanation from a stranger. no one owes you anything. if you see something you hate, block and move along. strangers on the internet aren’t politicians, they don’t have to make any heartfelt, public statement addressing everything they do that you, some random stranger, disagree with. it’s giving main character syndrome and no, sorry to tell you this, but the universe does not revolve around you

Was just looking through the wikipedia list of fictional non-binary characters (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_non-binary_characters) to remind myself of some characters (my memory is that of a slippery eel) and for some reason Popeye is on the list. Did not know that lore about my favorite sailor. Sadly I have already chosen my four warriors so someone else will have to decide if Popeye is a worthy submission
Okay so I’ve decided to host a smaller contest for characters like myself who don’t fall into the same category as a man or woman, an example of one of these characters is Raine Whispers from toh, no minors allowed, whether this contest will occur and how many characters it’ll include depends on the amount of submissions

Saw a whump idea the other day of basically this. How there's a special kind of hurt to doing something "in honor of"/"for"/"in behalf of" someone else that is against what they stand for. That actually works to destroy the things they love or the place they belong. It may not be on the dramatic level of some fanfics, but people shouldn't try to turn their favorite author into a whump victim. It's insane to pretend for a second that feeding an author's work into generative ai is some kind of preservation. It's not preservation when you copy/paste their work from one fansite to another, it's not preservation when you throw their work and writing style into the blender. Sites like AO3 (an actual archive) is a place to preserve a fic and it's up to the author to decide what site if any to use for posting and preserving their work.
This is the worst timeline. (x)

Windows that open, that actually let me smell the soft sweet nectar of reality. A scent so gentle that a candle cannot hope to imitate. My loves. You'll never know how much it means when you let birdsong and the sound of flighty critters back into my life to fill the empty husk that sits inside my chest as I toll away. Oh windows that actually open, I could cry for the alluring breeze passing through when it roars like a wave or merely whispers it's passing

Sure I see everyone's head cannons of strangers thinking Danny Phantom is a dead uncle or twin or the like and maybe Jack would believe that too, but Maddie? I don't think she'd buy that, she strikes me as the mom that went to every appointment and did her own sonograms from home with rigged up ghost equipment. She would be the one most likely to know if Danny (or fraternally Jazz) would've had a twin that could be that ghost.
But what if they had a third sibling they didn't know about, what if Maddie and/or Jack know that, one that Jack and Maddie kept a secret and they had picked out the name Bill for that baby? They were awfully quick to hop on "Invisio Bill" in early episodes if I remember correctly and as the local ghost hunters they may have started that name. Back to hiding the third child though, that could be for plenty of reasons:
- The baby might've had a different father. Plenty of couples struggle to conceive and seek ivf or similar. If the baby didn't survive then why bother explaining that yo the kids? This could explain why they recognized the face shape as similar, but accept the hair color or eye color of Danny Phantom as a evidence that this is their dead third child
- Maybe they had a miscarriage that happened after they knew Maddie was pregnant or maybe Maddie had an abortion. It could've been a risky pregnancy or maybe they didn't feel ready. Maybe their ghost equipment was just too toxic to Maddie's body for her to carry a child until they figured it out the hard way
- The child died young before Jazz was born. A child dead to unsecured ghost weapon seems likely in that household. Alternatively it could've been any regular cause of child death or illness due to the ghost equipment. It seems like they keep the most dangerous of their equipment in the basement now, I wonder why
- They experimented on the first child accidentally or otherwise and things didn't turn out well. The accidental experiment happened at least twice (Danny and Vlad) so why not a third time?
It's conceivable they wanted to talk to this lost child and that's part of why they made the ship and portal large enough for them to explore the ghost world. Depending on why they hid a third child you could justify why they don't tell Jazz/Danny sooner or if ever (Inviso Bill was technically a different timeline iirc), if you think both Jack and Maddie believe the same thing about Danny Phantom, etc. One important part of the headcanon to consider is if you think they genuinely are trying to kill Danny Phantom at any point or are they trying to capture him and why. Personally I'm still turning this one around in my mind as to what makes most sense to fit all the pieces together for my headcanon.
Anywho, if you write/read a story that uses any thoughts like this and want to share I'd love to read it!
I'm gonna be real I don't think anyone is ever gonna figure out Danny Phantom is living teenager Danny Fenton unless they see him transform. Because like. What the fuck is a half-ghost. Makes no fucking sense. If Danny Fenton is dead surely someone would have noticed by now.
What I think is more likely is that someone notices Danny Fenton bears a striking resemblance to Danny Phantom and delicately (or not so delicately) asks if he has an uncle or something who died young and that's why his parents are super into ghosts.

#reference for me to try
Hey kid, look at me.
I want you to T-pose. Turn your right thumb up and your left thumb doen and look at your right thumb. Move your arms up and down a bit until you feel a nerve running from your armpit to your palm. Now turn your right thumb down and your left thumb up, and look at your left thumb. Keep your chest facing forward and your shoulders back. Move your arms again until you feel that nerve again. Keep alternating between these two for a minute, or look at each thumb thirty times each.
Now sit down. Put your left hand firmly under your left buttock, palm down. Keep your shoulders back and put your right hand over the crown of your head, very gently pulling it to the right. Do this for thirty seconds, then do it again but with your right hand under your right buttock.
These are stretches for the nerves in your arms, and are very good for people who sit behind a computer a lot, or fibre artists, or you name it. Do them daily. They will hurt in the beginning, but keep doing them, even after the pain has gone, or it will return and you'll have to start all over.

To me this also highlights just how valuable it is to have everyone knowledgeable in multiple disciplines especially when they are in positions of power. So many politicians and judges went to school to focus in on just a handful of topics, but when they understand science we can prevent unnecessary hatred and inept laws/rulings. When lay people can learn for themselves and have a basic understanding of sciences they'll know better than to vote for or support the willfully ignorant and liars
#intersex people are real and valid
Literally sobbing. A judge, a US judge defended us. A judge brought up intersex people, using the term intersex, to *defend* us by not allowing our erasure. I'm having a lot of feelings right now
