You mentioned that F1 the movie is a re-narrativization of Lewis Hamilton’s career, can you expand on this? I’m not that familiar with Hamilton’s lore besides that the broad strokes of the brocedes divorce. I’m also a fan of this dumb movie and would love to hear your thoughts on how it relates to real F1

Ok first of all, I am being a little bit silly when I say that the movie is a renarrativization of Lewis’s career… to be completely honest I doubt he had as much influence on the script as he would like us to believe.

SECOND OF ALL those who think the movie is a Brad Pitt self insert fantasy are wrong… it is only a Brad Pitt self insert insofar as every Brad Pitt movie is a self insert. I think the real self insert is for Lewis… Joshua and Sonny both stand in for young and old versions of Lewis respectively. I think Joshua best represents Lewis’s rivalry with Fernando… now that Lewis is older and softer and wiser and living in an era where the kind of attitudes drivers used to have don’t really fly in the media landscape, I think he’s trying to reimagine his younger self as hotheaded and naive and capable of humility and teamwork. Young Lewis was none of those things. He was intelligent and ice-cold and not willing to compromise ever (and these are probably some of the things that made him a good driver). I think it’s also interesting that a Fernando-esque figure appears in the form of Ruben… it’s maybe a sign that Lewis knows he can never have a wholly good relationship with a driver as long as they are still racing.

Sonny on the other hand is a way for Lewis to fantasize about winning races long after his fifties and then have a spectacular and graceful exit. And also maybe to imagine that he will be okay with leaving the sport to the young drivers (he will never be okay with this).

A lot of people are praising the movie for accuracy, but it really amazes me how inaccurate the movie is with respect to driver dynamics and feelings and behaviour during races. You will rarely if ever see teamwork like Sonny and Joshua displayed during that fuckass film.

Another thing i want to say about f1 movie is that (spoilers) a protagonist’s life threatening crash is canonically caused by racing against Max… classic Lewis re-narrativization behaviour
