The final horror to hear they had all died for nothing, those long-forgotten people of our own village, that they had been innocent. "Victims of superstition," she had said. "There were no real witches." No wonder I had screamed and screamed.
"But my mother," Nicolas said, "told a different story, that the witches had been in league with the devil, that they'd blighted the crops, and in the guise of wolves killed the sheep and the children --"
"And won't the world be better if no one is ever again burnt in the name of God?" I asked. "If there is no more faith in God to make men do that to each other? What is the danger in a secular world where horrors like that don't happen?"

"Very few beings really seek knowledge in this world. Mortal or immortal, few really ask. On the contrary, they try to wring from the unknown the answers they have already shaped in their own minds --justifications, confirmations, forms of consolation without which they can't go on. To really ask is to open the door to the whirlwind. The answer may annihilate the question and the questioner."

Nicolas said, "It is splendid." I said, "It is petty." And it was like striking Nicolas. In my imagination he said what he had not said that night: "Let me have what I can believe in. You would never do that."

If you have a question that springs to mind from the findings that isn't answered in the results summary, please send me an ask! If it's something I can see in the data and doesn't identify a specific respondent, I am happy to answer any niche questions. As you can see, the results were on the long side already!

"I know nothing, because I know too much, and understand not nearly enough and never will. But this you taught me as much as any other I've ever known, that love is necessary, as much as rain to the flowers and the trees, and food to the hungry child, and blood to the starving thirsting predators and scavengers that we are. Love we need, and love can make us forget and forgive all savagery, as perhaps nothing else can."

The Vampire Chronicles Fandom Survey: One Week Left!
CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE SURVEY
I said originally the survey would be open until the end of June or until we had a significant number of responses- we are currently at 450, which is amazing! I don't anticipate getting too many more, but since some people may still stumble upon it, I will go with my original plan to close it JUNE 30TH, one week from today.
Share with your friends, share with your fandom discord! If you're in a fandom space that is not Bluesky, Tumblr, or Reddit that has people who would be interested in taking this, it likely has not been shared there yet. The correct places to share this are up to you, with the considerations that:
1. Respondents should be 18+ and have read one entire book in The Vampire Chronicles in any language.
2. Respondents should consider themselves a fan of The Vampire Chronicles books by Anne Rice. If you consider yourself a bigger fan of an adaptation, you're not super active in fandom spaces, you're new to the fandom- you are COMPLETELY welcome to take it!
I am hoping to get survey results out in July (hopefully early July, but Real Life will have to dictate that!)
Thank you so much to everyone who has responded and shared so far!!

"Very tempting, beautiful one," I said. "There were times in the last century when I would have given almost anything to hear those words. And we will come together, and we will talk, all of us, and we will have each other. It will be splendid, better than it ever was before. But I am going on the stage. I am going to be Lelio again the way I never was in Paris. I will be the Vampire Lestat for all to see. A symbol, an outcast, a freak of nature, something loved, something despised, all of those things. I tell you I can't give it up. I can't miss it. And quite frankly I am not the least afraid."

The Vampire Chronicles: A Fandom Survey
Click Here To Take The Survey!
What is this Survey?
This is an unofficial survey for fans of The Vampire Chronicles Book Series by Anne Rice. The questions are about how your interactions with the books, the fandom, and the adaptations. The goal is to collect information about the fandom for this almost fifty year old series to share it with the people who are a part of it!
Who should take this survey?
This survey is for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the books, or part of the fandom for the books. You should be eighteen and have read at least one of the books in its entirety, but otherwise, if you define yourself as a fan, please feel free to answer! People from anywhere in the world, who got into the books at any time, who read the books in any language, are encouraged to participate.
What do you plan to do with the results?
The goal is to create a summary report of the results, including any interesting trends, and to share it on this Tumblr account. Your answers, if you provide them in the survey, are only intended to be used for that purpose.
When will the results be shared?
The survey will be open until the end of June 2025, or whenever it gets a significant number of responses, whichever comes first. I have no idea how many people will be interested in this, so "a significant number of responses" is defined as whatever number makes me go "damn, that's a significant number of responses!" Any updates about the survey closing will be posted here, and the results will hopefully be posted within a few weeks at most after the survey closes.
Who made this survey?
I am a fan of The Vampire Chronicles, a fan of looking at data, and a huge fan of Microsoft Excel. I don't work with this kind of data professionally, but do fandom and personal data analysis projects on the side because I'm a very cool and interesting person. As stated above, my ultimate goal is to collect some interesting information and share it with the fandom!
Here on tumblr, I am also @sizeofyoursoul
Can I share this on another platform?
Please do! You can either share this post or the survey itself. If any questions come up, I'll answer asks here.

"If goodness does exist," he said, "then I'm the opposite of it. I'm evil and I revel in it. I thumb my nose at goodness. And if you must know, I don't play the violin for the idiots who come to Renaud's to make them happy. I play it for me, for Nicolas."

Oh, poor child, I thought. You might have had a little more compassion for everyone if you had known how beautiful you were, and you might have thought yourself a little bit stronger and more able to gain something for yourself. As it was, you played sly games on those around you, because you did not have faith in your own self or even know what you were.

Louis, whose green eyes are soulful, the very mirror of patient misery, soft-voiced, very human, weak, having lived only two hundred years, unable to read minds, or to levitate, or to spellbind others except inadvertently, which can be hilarious, an immortal with whom mortals fall in love.

The Vampire Chronicles: Adaptations and Supplementary Materials
I've seen (in answers and in reblogs) a few people mention in relation to The Vampire Chronicles Unofficial Fandom Survey (as of 6/9/2025, it is live, please take it here!) that they didn't know about a lot of the adaptations and supplemental materials asked about on the survey! Here is a list of them, and some info (for the US) about where they might be available as of June 2025:
Film/Televison/Musical Adaptations:
Interview with the Vampire, the 1994 film adaptation starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Kirsten Dunst; currently widely available for rental on most platforms for about four dollars.
Queen of the Damned, the 2002 film adaptation starring Stuart Townsend, Marguerite Moreau and Aaliyah; currently widely available for rental on most platforms for about four dollars.
Lestat, the 2005 Broadway musical by Elton John and Bernie Taupin; not currently available officially as either a soundtrack or an video recording. Unrelated fun fact: in current internet slang, did you know some people use the word "slime tutorial" as a search term for bootleg recordings of musicals?
Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, the 2022 AMC Television show starring Sam Reid, Jacob Anderson, Delainey Hayles, Bailey Bass, Assad Zaman, and Eric Bogosian, seasons one and two on AMC+, season one on Netflix and some ad supported streaming services, both seasons available for rent and purchase on Youtube as well.
Comic Books and Graphic Novels
Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and The Queen of the Damned by Innovation Comics; no longer in print but fairly widely available on places like eBay and ThriftBooks. The final chapter of The Queen of the Damned was never released but a proof was purchased at auction and scanned, and can be read here. All comics are also available broadly on the websites where you can read old comics.
The Tale of the Body Thief by Sicilian Dragon; no longer in print and available, but not as common, on places like eBay and ThriftBooks. Four out of a planned twelve issues were published, the full story formatted as a graphic novel is available online if you look in the right places.
Yoake no Vampire/Interview with the Vampire (Manga) by Shinohara Udou; never licensed or released in English, tells an abridged version of the story of the first book in three chapters. Alternatively called "Yoake no Vampire" (romanized Japanese title), "Interview with the Vampire", or by alternate translated versions of the Japanese title, including "Twilight Vampires" and "Vampires of the Dawn." Unrelated fun fact: the term for a scanned translated copy of a manga is "scanlation."
Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story by Ashley Marie Witter; Still, I believe, in print and widely available from booksellers, also available as an eBook. As of now, it is also available on Kindle Unlimited.
Biographies and Official Supplemental Materials
The Vampire Companion by Katherine Ramsland; only covers the first five books, I believe out of print, fairly available on places like eBay and ThriftBooks, and other used bookstores. A scan is available to be borrowed for free from the Internet Archive.
Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles: An Alphabettery by Becket; covers the books through Blood Communion, I believe still in print and available as an ebook, the ebook is currently about $6.00.
Prism of the Night: A Biography of Anne Rice by Katherine Ramsland; I believe out of print, fairly available on places like like eBay and ThriftBooks, and other used bookstores. A scan is available to be borrowed for free from the Internet Archive.
Conversations with Anne Rice by Michael Riley; I believe still in print and available as an ebook, the ebook is currently about $7.00.
Called Out of Darkness by Anne Rice; this is AR's "spiritual autobiography" and does not focus on The Vampire Chronicles, but is her only official autobiography. Appears to still be in print, is available as an ebook (around $10.00) and an audiobook (also on Audible).

Listen. Listen. Listen.
We don't all have to face this alone. We can work together. We can make new readers' lives easier. We don't have to pull the ladder up after us.
When Anne Rice uses the word dungarees, she's referring to blue jeans.
