1963 ♡ The Curtis House
Mr Curtis crept downstairs, trying his hardest not to make a noise, as he didn't want to wake anyone up. The fact that his eldest son was alseep on the couch, still wearing the clothes that he had on the night before, took him by suprise.
He walked over and tapped him lightly on the face. "Hey, junior. What are you doing here?" Mr. Curtis sked.
Darry groaned and put his hands over his eyes, as they hadn't yet adjusted to the brightness of the sunlight pouring in from the living room windows. "What?" He asked, his voice slightly raspy as he hadn't used it in many hours.
"Why aren't you in your room?" The man rephrased his question and tilted his head slightly. Mr. Curtis was a tall man with a decent enough build and short, dark hair. He looked exactly like Darry, just twenty years older.
Darry yawned and sat up on the couch. "Gracie's asleep in there, she stayed over last night," he explained.
"Oh," his father spoke, before shrugging his shoulders. "Well alright then," he made his way into the kitchen.
One thing that Darry really appreciated about his dad was that he didn't ask too many questions, he just dealt with what information was given to him and minded his own buisness.
"You're up early," Darry observed as he followed his father into the kitchen.
"Yeah, I'm trying to suprise your mom by making breakfast," he said taking ingredients out of the fridge. "So I gotta be quick before she wakes up and I'm gone,"
Darry let out a smile, his parents were one of the few married couples that he knew who met in high school and were still completely head over heels for eachother years later. It even made someone as tough as him believe in true love.
"Hey- uh, can I ask you a question about something?" he leaned against the sink, figuring that if anyone knew how to help him it would be his dad.
His father noticed the serious tone in his voice. "Of course, what's going on?" He mixed up all the ingredients in a big bowl.
"When did you know that you loved Mom?" He looked at his Dad looking for an answer... for both the question he asked and the one in his mind.
Mr Curtis cracked a smile, he had a feeling that he knew what this was about. "Well, if I can pick the exact moment that I knew, it would be in the summer before out senior year of high school. We went to the beach with a few friends and I decided to chase her with a jellyfish. She ran away and as I tried to run after her, I fell over a sandcastle and flat onto my face. She laughed so hard that she had to lie down and it was in that exact moment that I knew I wanted to spend every day of my life hearing her laughter... and I have,"
Thoughts flooded Darry's head like a tsunami, whirling around until he finally came to a descision. When he zoned back in, his father was plating up the breakfast and the coffee was ready.
The first thing that Gracie noticed when she woke up was her pounding headache.
The second was the discomfort of her leather skirt that she was still wearing.
All that she remembered of the night before was going to the party, drinking way too much beer and Darry carrying her up to bed. Everything else was a blur, as if she was remembering the night through frosted glass.
If anyone could clear her foggy memory, it was Darry. She went over to his chest of drawers and pulled out a pair of grey tracksuit bottoms. She then changed into them and then untied her shirt, buttoning it all the way up. She looked like shit, with last night's makeup smudged across her face and her hair knotted beyond belief, but she couldn't give a fuck.
Rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, Gracie finally opened the bedroom door. As she stepped onto the landing, she saw Mr. Curtis carrying two plates of pancakes up the stairs. It made her realise that she hadn't eaten since lunch yesterday, and her stomach rumbled just thinking about food.
"Morning," Mr. Curtis sent her a knowing smirk before he disappered into the bedroom that he shared with his wife.
Gracie walked down the stairs, gripping onto the banisters so that she wouldn't lose her footing and fall down. She heard the radio playing an Elvis song from the kitchen, Return to Sender.
The girl slowly trudged into the kitchen and saw Darry standing by the stove, chuckling to himself at Gracie's heavily hungover state. "Morning Sunshine," he spoke sarcastically.
Gracie groaned in response as she sat down at the kitchen table and put her head on her folded arms. Darry laughed harder and put a plate of pancakes and a cup of coffee down infront of her. The girl lifted her head at the smell of coffee and took a sip before starting on the food.
When she was about halfway through her breakfast, a daunting thought popped into her head. "I didn't say anything... weird last night, did I?" She asked Darry, who was now sitting on the seat opposite her.
"No, you didn't say anything..." he shrugged as he spoke, which Gracie knew was his tell whenever he lied.
"You liar! What did I say?" She asked, covering her hand with her mouth in shock. She honestly didn't remember a thing.
Darry laughed in response. "Just that, you called me a liar... repeatedly," he let out a smile.
Gracie creased her eyebrows in confusion "Why did I call you a liar?" she tried to remember as she ate another fork-full of pancake.
"Well," Darry started "I told you that I was taking you home because I cared about you, which I do, and you said that I was lying because I only cared about Shelly?" He shook his head at the memory and took a sip of his coffee.
Gracie hid her face behind her hands in embarassment. "Anything else?" She asked cautiously, in fear that drunk her confessed her feelings to the boy sitting infront of her
"Not really,"
Thank. Fucking. God
Gracie looked up at Darry and sighed. "Hey, I'm really sorry about how much of a bitch I was to you last night. I'm sure that you and Shelly are going to have a great time at prom and-"
She was cut off by Darry bursting into laughter once more, as if she was saying something humorous. "I didn't ask Shelly to prom," he explained, once the laughter had subsided. "She lied to make Paul jealous or something, I'm not quite sure,"
Gracie's mind was taken up by two emotions; relief and dread. If he didn't ask Shelly to prom, it was probably because he already had another date...
"I have no date right now, but there is this one girl that I'd like to ask," he looked straight into Gracie's eyes as he spoke but the girl was too busy feeling her heart shatter to notice the undertone in Darry's voice.
"Oh, what's her name?" She responded, looking blankly at the wall behind Darry's head.
He looked away and shut his eyes tightly. "Shit Gracie, you're really gonna make me say it?!" He snapped. He was never good with directly showing how he felt.
"God, I was just trying to take an interest in your life. No need to shout at me!" She stood up and stormed away. She was stopped in her tracks by Darry's next comment.
"Yanno what Micheals? Sometimes you can be so full of yourself that it blinds you!" He follows her to the living room, running both of his hands through his hair and letting them rest at the back of his neck.
Gracie turned to face him once more. "What are you talking about, blinds me from what?" She asked in a confused tone.
"It's you," Darry voice lowered back to a regular speaking tone as he took a deep breath. "You're the girl I want to bring to prom,"
The pair stood facing eachother for a moment as Gracie stood, speechless.
When she finally processed what had been said to her, she threw herself at Darry with such force that he stumbled back a few steps as he caught her.
"So do you wanna go with me?" He asked as he wrapped his arms around her waist.
Gracie pulled away from the hug to look up at him. "Sorry, I already have a date,"
The girl watched as Darry's expression turned to a look of worry and shock, like he had just been told that someone ran over his cat. "What! Who?"
Gracie cracked a smile. "I'm just fucking with you," she burst into laughter, clutching onto his arms to stop herself from falling onto the floor.
"Youshould'veseenyourface!" She spoke breathlessly between spurts of laughter. Darry looked at the girl in his arms in with the biggest smile on his face because he knew.
He wanted to spend every day of his life hearing laughter.

As the bell rang at the end of 5th period on Friday, Gracie walked from her American History class to her locker. She noticed a few cheerleaders standing against the lockers, which she recognised from their uniform. Her eyes scanned for Sally but she wasn't there.
Gracie opened her locker, trying to think of what she needed for her next class, when a voice could be heard from the other side of her locker door.
"Hey Gracie," Paul said as he opened his own locker, which was just two to the right of hers.
"Oh hey Paul, any exciting plans for the weekend? Gracie asked with a smile. Despite him being a soc, Paul was always friendly to her.
"Yeah, a couple guys from the team are throwing a beer blast by the river tonight after the game. I've been trying to convince Curtis to go all week, but he still refuses," he sighed. Gracie chuckled, she knew Darry's stubborness better than anyone.
"Yeah, well good luck with that," the girl closed her locker door.
Then, the volume of the cheerleaders' conversation increased so that everyone close-by could hear what they were talking about. "Yeah it will be so much fun. Who are you going to prom with, Shelly?" one of the girls asked.
"Well actually," Shelly's eyes glanced over towards Gracie and Paul before she continued. "Darry Curtis asked me to prom yesterday after practice. Isn't he such a hunk?" She asked her friends.
The rest of the cheerleaders giggled in agreement but a few meters away, Gracie's face dropped into a look of shock as she stood for a moment, silent and motionless. Paul noticed this and put a hand on the girl's shoulder. "Gracie I-"
His words were cut off by the bell ringing and before he got a chance to repeat himself, Gracie darted down the hallway. She didn't stop until she reached her Science class, where she took a seat beside Sally.
"Why are you so bothered about this? He's the football captain, obviously he's gonna bring the cheer captain to prom." She thought, but her thoughts were getting to loud and she just wanted to forget about them. So she turned to Sally and asked
"Hey are you going to the beer blast down by the river tonight?"
"Let's Go Tigers, Let's Go! Let's Go Tigers, Let's Go!" The crowd chanted over and over. Gracie was at the sidelines with her camera, trying to get some decent shots. She had managed to get a clear photo of the cheer pyramid that she was certain would make it into the yearbook.
It was nearing the end of the fourth quater and the score was tied. It seemed like everyone was on the edge of their seats with the anticipation, 30 seconds wasn't much time to secure a win. The seconds counted down as Darry caught the ball. He ran as fast as he could, dodging the defense of his oposing team as he sprinted through the end line and-
TOUCHDOWN!
The crowd cheered energetically as the final buzzer sounded, signalling that Will Rodgers High had won the game.
The team surrounded Darry as they cheered "Curtis! Curtis! Curtis!"
The huddle dispearsed when the player's girlfriends ran on to the field, pulling them close in a celebratory kiss. Darry's eyes darted around as he looked for Gracie, secretly hoping that she would run up to him too.
He found her, leaving the field with the Sally, not even acknoledging his win.
Where is she going? He thought.
"Come on Gracie, He's outside!" Sally called out from the bottom step of her staircase, where she was sat buckling the strap of her black wedges.
"God, you're so impatient!" She called back, throwing her red lipstick into her handbag and checking herself in Sally's bedroom mirror one last time before heading downstairs.
She wore a black leather mini skirt, a red gingham shirt pulled up and tied just below her boobs and a pair of red mary-janes. Her hair was slightly twisted and pinned in on either side, showing off her face and perfect makeup (courtesy of Sally).
"Damn girl, you look smokin' !" Sally exclaimed and jokingly whistled as Gracie did a spin. Although she was happy her friend finally agreed to go out, she was suspicious as to why.
"Hey, why do you wanna go to this beer blast anyways? You're usually against all that stuff," she asked, standing up and grabbing her handbag from the couch.
Gracie shrugged "Wanted to see what all the fuss was about," she lied, with a fake smile plastered across her face.
Sally nodded and smiled back, although she didn't believe her one bit. The pair left the house and saw a red Chevy Corvette Stingray parked outside, a car like that could only belong to a really wealthy soc.
"Who is this guy?" Gracie asked, leaning closer to her friend. Sally said that the guy she was going out with was picking them up, nothing else.
"His name is Charlie, he's super rich and super hot," she nudged Gracie's shoulder and led the way to the car, swinging her hips as she did so.
Gracie chuckled and followed her friend close behind. They got in the car and Charlie drove down to the riverside, where the party was happening. She had to admit that Sally was right, he was hot.
For the first half hour of the night, everything was fine. She stuck with Charlie and Sally as she drank one or two beers and listened to the music. It all went downhill, however, when Sally and Charlie disappeared to make out under the bridge.
That wasn't the reason for the downfall, infact she was happy that her friend had someone to kiss. It was just that the moment Sally left, Shelly arrived.
There she was, in her short dress, her blonde hair cascading down past her shoulders in waves. She looked beautiful, no one could deny that and that made Gracie incredibly jealous.
Of course Darry would wanna go out with her, just look at her... god stop being jealous Gracie, just stop- thinking! She thought as she picked up another beer and chugged it, figuring it was the quickest way to get what she wanted, an empty brain.
Beer after beer after beer, her vision got blurry and so did her thoughts. So much so that when a guy came up to her and started guiding her back to his car, she followed.
Darry got out of his truck, fixing his short, freshly greased hair. He wore a pair of new-ish blue jeans, a brown belt holding them up, and a black t-shirt, which showed off every muscle on his body. The T-shirt was covered by his red and white letterman jacket.
When he walked down to the riverside, he was immediately met with people congratuating him on his win and girls who were very obviously coming onto him. He very politely excused himself as he looked around for Paul, who was the one that had convinced him to come.
Instead, he saw Gracie walking up the hill with a guy. Well, less walking and more stumbling, as she was so drunk that she could barely stand up but the guy with her seemed perfectly sober.
He marched up the hill behind them and placed a firm hand on the guy's shoulder. "What you think you're doing there, pal?" He asked, with a raised eyebrow.
As the guy turned around, Darry could see who it was. His name was Chris and he was the substitue line-backer who spent all this past season on the bench. By the look on his face, it was clear that he wasn't expecting the football captain to be standing behind him.
"Uh, I was just-" he stuttered out.
"Not with her, you weren't," he spoke back coldly. He then pulled Gracie away from Chris' side and started walking back to his truck with his arm around her waist, to stop her from falling over onto the grass.
"Hey, I'm real sorry Darry," Chris ran to Darry's side and practically begged for his apology to be accepted. "If I'd known that she was your girl then-"
Darry stopped in his tracks and turned to face the boy beside him. "Well now you know... and you better get the hell out of here before I beat your ass," he threatened, his veins almost popping out of his neck in anger.
Chris nodded and scurried away. It was just then an extremely intoxicated Gracie looked up and mumbled "Darry? 'S that you?"
The dark-haired boy's expression softened as he looked down to the girl by his side "Yeah darlin' it's me,"
Gracie giggled at the nickname before she realised that they were were walking away from the party. "Where'r we goin'?" Her words were slurred but they had a immenent tone of confusion.
"I'm bringing you home," he said simply.
Gracie gasped dramatically and pushed Darry away from her. She quickly realised that she couldn't stand by herself so she sat on the grass and crossed her arms, like a child throwing a tantrum. "I'm not going, s' too early,"
Darry ran a hand through his hair with a sigh as he realised that this was going to be harder than he thought. He kneeled down beside the girl and tried to talk. "I know, but you're drunk and it's best if I just get you home, doll," he spoke with a soft tone.
"Why?" She asked, giving Darry a death-glare.
"Because it's not safe for you here. That guy was trying to take advantage of you and I bet that he wasn't the only one thinking that way. I care about you too much to let that happen to you, Gracie," he responded, taking the girl's hand in his.
Gracie pulled her hand away and turned to face the other way. "Stop lying Darry, I hate liers," she said softly as she pulled her knees to her chest, her eyes watering up.
Darry was confused at the girl's words. "What?"
"You don't care about me, you care about Shelly," she said as the tears finally spilled over and down her face. "I know you asked her to prom,"
This just made Darry grow even more confused. "I have no idea what you're talking about,"
Gracie turned back to face him. "I told you to stop lying to me! I heard Shelly telling all her friends about how you two are going to prom together!" She shouted, before starting to cry again, her body shaking with every sob.
Darry leaned over and picked Gracie up bridal style, as he carried her back to his truck. He placed her onto the passenger seat gently and shut the door. Just as he was about to get in on the driver's side, an idea came over him.
"I'll be back in a minute," he said before locking the doors of the truck and walking back down to the party. He didn't stop until he was face to face with Shelly, who was talking to Paul by the edge of the river.
"Hiya Darry, how's it going?" Shelly smiled.
"Can I talk to you for a moment?" He asked, glancing over at Paul.
The blond boy immediately understood and threw the half-full bottle of beer that was in his hand into the river next to him. "Damn, I accidently dropped by beer! Guess I gotta get a new one," he shrugged and walked away.
"Is everything alright Dar?" She asked sweetly, but Darry's crossed arms and tight jaw gave off the impression that everything was infact not alright.
"Why the hell are you telling everyone that I asked you to prom?" He said in a whisper-shout.
Seemingly unnaffected by the angry undertone, Shelly started to laugh. "Oh that! I just said to make Paul jealous, and it worked. He just asked me out! Oh I hope you didn't mind,"
Darry scoffed "Yeah, well I do mind. Gracie heard you and know she's upset for some reason? You're a really mean person and I hope Paul comes to his sences before it's too late!" He spoke, angrily before storming back to the car.
Shelly was left speechless, with her mouth hanging wide open. The interaction was soon forgotten when Paul came back and she put back on her flirtatious attitude.
Darry drove quickly through the streets of Tulsa. He never spoke to women like that but right now, he was too angry to care. It was only when he was parked outside the Micheals' house did he realise that Gracie had fallen asleep in the seat beside him.
He turned off the ignition and shook her lightly, she started to stir and eventually opened her eyes. "Where are we?" She asked, sleepily.
"Home," he replied, getting out of the truck "Let's get you into bed,"
Gracie nodded but then she suddenly remembered something. "Wait, my parents think that I'm sleepin' in Sally's tonight. Can I stay with you?" She asked, her eyes peeking out from behind her lashes.
Darry nodded. "Always," he said before walking around her side of the car and opening the door. He picked her up like he had before, she rested her head against his chest and by the time they had reached Darry's bedroom, she had already fallen asleep.
He took her shoes off and rolled her to her side, incase she puked during the night. He then pulled the bed-covers up to her shoulders and planted a kiss to the top her head.
"Goodnight," he whispered as he turned off the lamp beside the bed. Just as he turned to leave the room, he heard Gracie mutter in her sleep.
"G'night Superman,"

Gracie woke up with a groan when she heard the sound of her alarm ringing. She leaned over to turn it off, but it kept ringing. "Ugh, shut up," she mumbled before taking the batteries out of the back of it.
The woman sat up in bed and yawned, before sluggishly trudging over to her wardrobe and picked out her outfit for the day:

She had dressed a little more greaserish during high school, never being seen without her dad's old leather jacket on, but she had started to wear more professional-looking clothes after the salon opened. She wanted to be respected. On her days off, however, she was inclined to slip back into her usual greaser-y fashion sence.
After she finished her makeup, Gracie made her way into the bathroom where she brushed her teeth, before going downstairs where she was greeted by-
No one. Only the ticking of the clock hanging on the living room wall.
The house always seemed silent, like a library. Well, it hasn't always seemed that way... just since the accident.
It was a Sunday Evening and Gracie was staying over at the Curtis house. Her parents had gone on one of their little weekend getaways with Mr and Mrs. Curtis to the countryside. They did this once every few months after they had saved up enough money for it. It was nothing fancy, but both of the mothers were always so excited in the weeks leading up to it.
Whenever they were gone, Gracie always found herself staying next door with Darry, Soda and Pony; as she always seemed to get anxious in an empty house at night. Every time a branch tapped against the window, she bolted out of bed. Ready to grab her navy-handled switchblade, that Two had stolen for her, out of her bed-side locker.
This night was seemed to be the same as all the ones before. The parents said that they would be home by 10pm and it was currently 8. The whole gang was packed in the Curtis' living room, watching whatever movie was showing on the television. Tonight it was 'The Searchers' and all of the boy's eyes were glued to the screen like a fly to a fly-trap. Especially Johnny, who loved western films more than anyone.
Around halfway through the film, Gracie was beginning to get sleepy. She was already tired from going to beauty school and working at the drive-in, but it was something about those soft trans-atlantic accents that the Hollywood stars always use that never fail to put her straight to sleep.
She was sitting right beside Darry, his arm slung over the both of her shoulders as her head rested on his chest. They had been doing this every time they watched a movie since they were kids. It didn't matter if they were on different sides of the room when the movie started because by the time the end credits rolled, the pair were always cuddled up beside eachother.
The gang used to poke fun at their almost couple-like habit, but since Darry threatened that he'd beat them up if they wouldn't shut it, no more comments had been made.
Just as Gracie was about to fall asleep, the phone rang, startling her awake. Darry leaned over the arm of the couch to reach the phone on the side-table. When he moved, Gracie internally groaned. She had just gotten comfortable and knew it would take ages to find the way that she was lying before.
Darry picked up the telephone and put it up to his ear, ocassionally saying things like: "Yes," and "No, I'm their oldest son,"
The gang cared very little about who was on the phone, so their attention quickly returned to the cowboy film on the television screen. Gracie sat up fully when Darry took his arm from around her shoulder and used it to cover his mouth in shock. "Are you sure it's them?" he asked, a look of disbelief crossed his face as his eyebrows furrowed.
She noticed that something was wrong, so when Darry ended the call with "Yes, yes, I'll be right there. Thank you sir,", Gracie immediatley asked "What's wrong?"
Darry looked over to her with a blank expression. "It's our parents- they, they're in the hospital,"
By the time that Gracie and the Curtis brothers had reach the hospital, all four of their parents were dead.
Since then, it feels like everything has changed. Gracie had to get used to being alone and Darry had to get used to being a parent, whether they liked it or not.
"That's what I told him! I was like 'Do those weak pick-up lines usually get you laid?' and he was all like 'Why, is it working for you babydoll?' Ugh he was such a skuzz" Sally shuddered at the memory, as she recalled the night before to her friend.
Grace laughed as she turned the sign on the door of the salon to 'Open'. It was usually quiet in the mornings so the pair didn't expect any customers for at least a half-hour. "How is it that you always have something to tell me in the mornings?" She asked.
"It's beacuse I go out at night! Come on Gracie, you have to come to Buck Merril's party with me after our Dingo shift tonight," Sally pleaded, with puppy-dog eyes "Please? You never go out anymore"
Gracie raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean 'anymore'? I went out with you once in high school and you remember how that night went. Besides, I don't wanna waste my money on booze when I have-"
"-loans to pay, blah blah blah. I have debts too, but I don't let it stop me from having fun!" Sally finished. Gracie rolled her eyes and the pair sat in silence for a moment before Sally spoke again.
"Who knows? Maybe you'll meet a rich man, who'll fall head over heels for you and pay all of your debts," she smiled cheekily.
Gracie scoffs "Any rich man you meet on the East side are looking for two things: trouble and cheap gas"
Sally shrugged and before she could let out a witty response, a ringing sound filled the air. The two women looked towards the door and saw a short lady with blonde hair enter through the door. Only when she spoke did the pair realise who it was, Shelly Oaks.
"I don't have an appointment, but you don't look too busy so I doubt it's a problem," she spoke, presumption clouding around her words like cigarrette smoke.
"Well, she hasn't changed since high-school," Sally muttered under her breath, earning in a slap in the arm from her friend.
"Not a problem at all," Gracie put on a fake smile as she stood up. "What are we doing for you today?"
"Just a wash and an up-do, thanks" Shelly replied before going to sit at the wash basin. Gracie nodded and went behind the basin, running the water until it got warm enough.
"How are you doing Shel? I haven't seen you since graduation," Sally admitted as she swiveled a chair around to face them.
"I've been doing just fine. I was just in the area and remembered that you two opened a salon around here," She said shrilly, as if they had all been the best of friends for years. "Oh, by the way, I'm getting married next week,"
Gracie sent Sally a suprised look from behind the back of Shelly. "Really? To who?" Sally asked as Gracie lowered the ex-cheer captain's head into the basin and dampening her hair with the water tap.
"Paul Holden, he proposed while we were in New York. At the top of the Empire State Building," she replied. It was more of a brag then a touching anecdote.
"How romantic," was all that Gracie said as she massaged the shampoo in gently. If she let herself say anything else, then her sarcasm would be more obvious.
"Yeah. I'm sure you gals will find someone like that someday," Shelly said, in an almost-condescending voice. She closed her eyes at the feeling of the warm water running along her scalp. This gave Sally and Gracie the oppurtunity to share a look that said "can you believe this bitch?"
"Acctually, I'm getting married soon too," Gracie lied. Sally's mouth dropped open as she mouthed the word 'WHAT!'
'I DON'T KNOW!' Gracie mouthed back.
"Oh," Shelly's brow creased in confusion. "To who,"
In the heat of the moment, Gracie said the first name that popped into her head.
"Darry Curtis"

YOU'VE REALLY GOT A HOLD ON ME
♡Chapter Three♡
Chapter List Masterlist

1963 ♡ Will Rodgers High School
"Come on team pick up the pace!" Coach Goldberg shouted, encouraging the football team to speed up on their laps of the pitch. They had been training more than usual, in preparation for the big game against John Marshall High the next day.
Over on the empty soccer pitch, the cheerleaders practiced their routine. Shelly Oakes, the cheer captain, stood at the front as she watched, trying to decide where to place people on the pyramid.
Dotted around both fields were the yearbook photographers, trying to take some last-minute pictures of the sports teams before the planners decided on a final layout and sent them to print next week.
One of those photographers was Gracie Micheals, she was stood to the sideline taking pictures of everything from the cheerleaders, to the girlfriends of the football players who were sitting and talking on the bleachers, to the football players themselves.
After a while she got distracted and instead, took photos of different things around her like a snail she saw moving across the grass. So focused on taking the perfect shot, she didn't even hear Sally sneaking up behind her.
"Boo!" She shouted, grabbing her best friend by both shoulders and shaking her slightly. Gracie jumped forwards in fright, accidently crushing the snail under the foot of her converse.
"Ugh no!" Gracie exclaimed, looking at the sole of her shoe at the crushed-up snail remnants. "You made me step on my muse!" She joked, lifing her foot up to show Sally, to which she fake-gagged.
"Get any good shots?" Sally asked, nodding towards the camera in her friends hand.
"Yeah, I think I took a few good ones of the team," Grace replied. "But I gotta go develop them before I know for sure,"
Sally cracked a smile. "Of the whole team or just of Darry Curtis?" she nudged her friend teasingly with a giggle.
Gracie's mouth fell open and her voice dropped to a whisper. "Would you quiet down? Someone could hear you, yanno?" She said before looking around to see if anyone heard.
Sally just rolled her eyes "Don't flip your wig girl, there's no-one listenin'... I gotta go before the water break is over, Shelly's already mad at me for forgetting my back-handspring," she explained before walking back over to the other cheerleaders on the soccer field.
Gracie shook her head with a smile before going back to taking pictures. Sally was the only person that she trusted enough to know about her growing crush on the captain of the football team and if anyone else found out, she'd be embarrassed for life.
Darry and Paul ran together on their second lap of the field. As they ran past the bleachers, Paul's eyes were drawn to one of the photographers who was standing at the sidelines.
"Hey Curtis, isn't that your girl over there?" He asked, pointing in the direction of the girl with the camera.
Darry looked in the direction that he was pointing and shook his head. "Gracie? I've lived next door to her my whole life but I wouldn't consider her my girl. We're just friends,"
Paul let out a smirk, knowing he was lying. "Oh, so you wouldn't mind if I asked her to prom then?" He asked, watching Darry's face for a reaction.
Darry turned his head to see if Paul was joking. When he realised that he was, he let out a light chuckle. "You better watch where you step, Holden. You know she's off-limits,"
Paul laughed weakly and his breath got heavier as he had to run faster to keep up with Darry's pace. "You know I'm only kiddin', Curtis. But I gotta say, she's a real looker, so you better stop pretendin' that you don't like her before someone else asks her out,"
Darry thought about that for a moment. It had never occured to him that Gracie could go to prom with someone else and the more he thought about it, the more he hated the idea.
