It's only because the people of the 99 Caverns are used to velocimorphs that the Flopper slug was considered"useless." In their native home caverns, they're actually pretty useful and one of the more powerful species of slug.

The Yang that Junjie knows of has been twisted by history and those who wrote it. The truth is that Yang was a woman, whose hair was gold and whose archery proficiency came from a bow built into a prosthetic arm, but the image of a powerful male warrior was considered preferable to a disabled girl and thus the truth was all but erased. Her full name was Yang Xiao Long.

When Junjie is awoken by nightmares of his time as the Dark Slinger, he will find the nearest person he considers trustworthy, wake them up if they’re asleep and demand to know the colour of his eyes and the shape of his pupils. He isn’t satisfied until it is confirmed that they are still brown and round, at which point he practically collapses from relief.

The deep voice of a Dark Slinger is only an indication to the viewer that they are possessed by the Goon Doc. In-universe, a Dark Slinger sounds exactly as they did when they were free.
