idk, is it so much to ask that jiang cheng and lan wangji get kidnapped and are forced to spend time together, in the same room, with their cores locked? like fantastic, 16 years of practice at avoiding each other like the plague out the window because some chuckleheads who thought they were sooooo clever decided to lure the erstwhile yiling laozu into a trap by abducting people he cares about? so these two nemeses are languishing in some dungeon somewhere, exhausted from trying to escape, and jiang cheng makes a comment, and lan wangji is just oozing disdain from every pore, and two seconds later somehow lan wangji has managed to insinuate that jiang cheng doesn’t care about wei wuxian’s happiness despite only having said like three words total, and that is IT, jiang cheng has HAD IT, how DARE HE???? but again like i said they don’t have any energy or power and obviously their weapons have been confiscated so they just…have a slapfight?? with their sleeves??? and they’re SO serious about it??? wei wuxian shows up to kick some chucklehead ass and is all ready to bust them out of there but when he arrives they’re just? batting each other in the face?? wearing THE most ferocious glares known to man?? the killing intent just radiating off of them???

so obviously wei wuxian is overcome, just look at them, roughhousing like real brothers, aiya you two, i knew you loved each other deep down, i’m so glad you got it all out in the open, now we can be one big happy family, we are going to do so many joint night hunts, everyone is going to bond, it’s going to be so beautiful -

and like neither of them can correct him? because wei wuxian is so clearly happy about this, so if jiang cheng bursts his bubble, he’s proving lan wangji’s point, and if lan wangji does it, he’s no better than what he’s accusing jiang cheng of? so now they’re locked in eternal stalemate, forced to pretend that their deep and abiding hatred is normal Just Brother Things because wei wuxian comes from the Stop-Hitting-Yourself-I’m-Not-Touching-You-I’m-Not-Touching-Youuuuu School of Fraternal Affection???

(plot twist: wei wuxian can actually tell their ridiculous slapfight is not affectionate but is pretending otherwise because so help him he IS manifesting brother-in-law reconciliation in this dungeon tonight if it is the LAST thing he EVER does -

and it turns out that being able to slap each other with their sleeves whenever they want is actually a great outlet for their mutual resentment, and before you know it jiang cheng starts forgetting that they aren’t just doing normal brother things, and lan wangji is having such a great time not being totally repressed, that eventually there comes a day when lan wangji throws jiang cheng into the lake and jiang cheng just acts fake indignant instead of real indignant and wei wuxian isn’t even watching them so it’s not like they need to pretend and hey wait a second - are they friends now? did that work???? and then they all live happily ever after THE END)

seriously tho i’m not saying Jiang Cheng should win any parenting prizes, but every time people are like “Jin Ling grew up without parents” I’m like EXCUSE ME but did you SEE that time Jin Ling had a meltdown and started sobbing in public and Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui all just kind of stood there sadly and awkwardly, and then Jiang Cheng charged up out of nowhere and was like “WHO HURT YOU? I’LL KILL THEM,” and gave Jin Ling a hug and took him away to finish crying in private????? DAD BEHAVIOR. THE DAD-EST BEHAVIOR.  Like, Jiang Cheng is traumatized as hell from losing every member of his immediate family within a few years, and we know he’s not great at expressing his emotions healthily–but you know what is consistent about Jiang Cheng? From way back at the beginning of the series when everything’s great? Insults are his love language. Making idle threats to Wei Wuxian are how he tells him he cares about him. And when we see him doing the same thing to Jin Ling, it’s pretty damn clear that Jin Ling takes it the same way: he’s clearly inherited Jiang Cheng’s competitive spirit, and–just like Jiang Cheng!–he hates the idea of being a failure or disappointing his parent, but he’s not actually concerned that Jiang Cheng is going to break his legs. When he uses Jiang Cheng’s “don’t come back” threat as an excuse to explain why he went off with Mo Xuanyu, Jiang Cheng is like “obviously I didn’t mean that, you little shit,” and it’s pretty clear to me that this is obvious to Jin Ling? 

(sidenote, but I actually really adore Jin Ling’s attempts to help Mo Xuanyu way at the beginning, when he just thinks Mo Xuanyu is his disgraced third uncle? The little “oh my god, what are you doing, I’M TRYING TO HELP YOU you DIPSHIT” stuff that he does i actually really kind of moving, given how few shits anyone else ever gave about Mo Xuanyu.)   also, as if Jin Ling weren’t enough of a mini Jiang Cheng, once he starts having feelings about the Lan juniors and Mo Xuanyu/Wei Wuxian, he expresses his feelings in basically the exact same way that Jiang Cheng does: vigorous insults. because that’s the love language he knows! how do you tell someone you don’t want them to die except by shouting “DIE” at them while punching them in the shoulder??? also just the fact that Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling travel around together, and while Jin Ling clearly does have a good relationship with Jin Guangyao, it’s visibly WAY less close than his relationship with Jiang Cheng. Because Jin Guangyao is his uncle, and Jiang Cheng is his dad. 

and i’m not saying that jin ling doesn’t feel like an orphan, or that he doesn’t miss Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan as concepts, because obviously he’s just as traumatized as Jiang Cheng by those losses in a different way! I’m just saying that I think Jin Ling absolutely did have the stability of growing up with an adult who loved him and was ferociously protective of him and let him know that he loved him and would never let anything happen to hm. I think Jiang Cheng fixed Jin Ling’s hair and fetched him down out of trees when he climbed too high and peeled lotus seed pods for him when he was too little, you know? I think Jiang Cheng was his DAD.
