Do you have a favorite book you can recommend about yokai? It’s for my THESIS. thank you.

Sure! I’ve written about a few books that should be of some use to you.

An Introduction to Yokai Culture - Monsters, Ghosts, and Outsiders in Japanese History by Komatsu Kazuhiko. 

One of the few Japanese studies of yokai to be translated in to English. The bibliography and reading list at the back of the book alone are pretty invaluable, referencing studies both in English and Japanese that will be useful to look in to when you’re done reading it.

Pandemonium and Parade by Michael Dylan Foster.

It comes really recommended to those wanting to learn a little more about the sociology behind yokai and how they came to influence popular media. The book is academic in its approach, but it’s still an entertaining read (especially when compared to academic film books I’ve read).

Is the book a good introduction to yokai? Eh, not really. In that case check out Matthew Meyer’s The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons and its follow up. But if you already have a small glossary of the critters in the back of your head and want to know more, this is probably your book. If you’re writing a thesis this one is essential.

Asian Ethnology (previously Asian Folklore Studies) 1943-2018

Not a book, but this one is integral if you’re wanting to show your examiners that you’ve read deeply on the subject. There’s a wide variety of countries being researched here and searching for yokai won’t return much, but if you’re wanting to form a really comprehensive thesis this will help. Most articles are available on the website, but accessing it through jstor at your University should give access to a decent amount of the volumes too. http://asianethnology.org

Japandemonium Illustrated: The Yokai Encyclopedias of Toriyama Sekien

This is another one that’s pretty essential and should be your reference point for 18th century depictions of yokai. Matt Alt and Hiroko Yoda not only translated Sekien’s accompanying text, but provide a write up of their own further describing what’s going on in the pictures.
