// Safin definitely fits into the endless villain monologue trope (that’s basically canon). Like, he will totally waste time or lose the upper hand in a situation because he’s just giving exposition about some abstract concept lmfao 😭 😭 😭
And it’s not really because he’s super full of himself or anything, it’s just that he’s spent so much time analyzing all of his own actions. He has justified them to himself in his own way, and speaking about it aloud sort of solidifies that for him. His own warped sense of reasoning is what allows him to do terrible things and still sleep at night. He wants you to know that he has thought about it and “no i am not in the wrong you just aren’t thinking about it hard enough here let me explain for 20 minutes why this is fine”
Most of his made-up logic behind why he does awful things is totally immoral and straight up false but he’s kind of delusional enough to not really realize his faults
Bro will kill hundreds of innocents and be like “oops anyways guys it’s ok i had a good reason ❤️ why are u still mad at me”
#i will probably write an actual thing about this some time#idk i spend so long trying to rationalize his actions like from his pov#sometimes i get so sucked into it i start forgetting he's even that bad#which he IS he's literally awful#he is in total denial about it tho#▸ OOC || foxgloves — beautiful; did you choose them?

MY BEAUTIFUL PROOF LIES ALL IN RUINS.
Headcanon ; a ( somewhat ) brief explanation on the work and pursuits of safin’s family
1960s: The birth of a pharmaceutical enterprise nurtured in the city of Kazan's lively industry was promising as soon as it was conceived. Gostan Safin, a young and passionate chemist, had built up a chemical enterprise after the ban on the private business sector in the USSR was lifted in 1964, leaving the field in shambles. Though it was a legitimate production cooperative on paper, much of Gostan's association thrived on the shadow economy and black market that had quickly inflated during the ten years that the private ban was in place. Gostan worked with other individual entrepreneurs in this cooperation and refined raw materials to be sold back to the state. The enterprise was unique in that it saw the product move through its entire life cycle: from the germination, growth and harvesting of the source plants to their refinement into several products of various uses.
/
1970s: The enterprise quickly rose to high prominence and prospered financially during its early years in the Brezhnev Era. Soon enough, due to policy changes, national stagnation kicked off in 1975 and Gostan and his associates made the move to begin producing not only medicines but now bio-weaponry for the state. This decision was made after they saw that the industry had been prioritised and military spending was skyrocketing as the Cold War continued. This is where he made most of his profit — chemical warfare. Around this time Safin began supplying SPECTRE, an international terrorist organisation, with various poisons and chemical products.
/
1980s: By the time Lyutsifer was a young child, the Soviet economy had taken a drastic dip to rock bottom. Failed reforms and political turmoil saw the USSR in its Era of Stagnation. Times were tough for the Soviet people, though it was especially difficult for industries that hadn't capitalised off the spike in arms and heavy industry demand. The enterprise's profits slowed, but, fortunately, it survived off its various connections as a weaponry supplier.
/
1990s: The USSR's turbulent history came to an end in 1991. The Russian Federation took its place and immediately began moving towards a market economy once again. Foreign trade was properly reinstated and the privatisation of state enterprises completely changed how the new Russian society would function. Assassinations and corruption became commonplace in Russian businesses after state enterprise stocks were released, essentially redirecting large sums of money that had once belonged to the community into the hands of a select few people. Gostan's former partners whom had primarily been involved with the business in order to avoid being prosecuted by the Soviet government seemed to either mysteriously fall ill or leave the country, fading into the background and leaving one man as the victor. Safin maintained his iron grip on the enterprise and remained in his position as the sole executive, immediately buying out the now available stocks and investing in foreign assets and watching as profits soared. Many of his produced poisons were used by the state in assassinations and cover-ups that occurred around this time of uncertainty.
Though profits were at an all-time high, inflation in Russia was as well. Gostan had become somewhat of a business oligarch, leading the chemical industry in Russia as profits landed in the billions and found himself with more power and influence than he had ever thought possible. Unfortunately, his reign came to a swift end as he and the majority of his family were killed by SPECTRE with poisons of his own creation under Ernst Blofeld's command in 1994. The murders were painted publicly as an accident, and Lyutsifer was left seriously damaged and hospitalized — the only one alive.
/
2000s: Lyutsifer Gostanovna Safin, having been sixteen at the time of the incident and hospitalized for nearly the entire year of 1995, was in no shape to continue his father's legacy, so it sat in limbo. Having been the youngest of four, he was never prepared for such a task, aspiring towards more academic and humanistic pursuits under the assumption that his older brother, Vadim, would take over the company when it was time. Unfortunately, it seemed that if Lyutsifer didn't take up his father's enterprise, the assets would be lost to someone else, essentially ruining what his family had dedicated their lives to. Pressured by this, in 2001 at the age of twenty - three he had formally become the company's overseer, just as his father had been.
It was obvious that running his father's company had never been his desire, and the enterprise adopted a group-based administration in order to let it function more autonomously. Investments were put back into chemical warfare and quietly produced for multiple foreign powers. All ties were cut with SPECTRE and it seemed that Lyutsifer had decided to cease any sort of involvement with the group. Their conflict would remain a secret.
Despite his introverted and idiosyncratic nature, the youngest Safin proved himself to be a calculated and effective businessman. His father had been a charismatic socialite, and it was to that of which he owed much of his success. He knew how to lead a group and turn a deal in his favour. His son would take an approach with less of a social factor, running the company covertly and making appearances only when it was needed. Instead of being respected for his confidence and likeable nature akin to the man before him, he was a quiet leader; not a necessarily meek one, but a sort of unseen draconian power that commanded silent respect.
#cw familial death#twirls hair.. umm hiiii.......#sorry long post#running a 'business' in the ussr was WEIRD so i thought this would be neat#did i spend 4 hours straight writing this? yeah.#randomly came to me#anyways. very important to safin as a character#he's very detached from the business but its still really important#▸ HEADCANON || i lived like a man who wanted to die but who had no courage to do it himself#gonna put this in the queue me thinks

TRY AS HE MIGHT TO IGNORE IT ; THERE WAS A SINISTER FAMILIARITY TO SAFIN THAT HE HAD EXPERIENCED ONE BEFORE. A sense of understanding the 00 was reluctant to touch. He had felt such a thing during his time with Raoul Silva. With Silva it had been much more pronounced however ; like looking into the mirror of his future after realising he was expendable. With Safin , it was a little different. THIS WAS THE VERY THING HE WOULD NOT BECOME. He might have been on the path to it once. Angry , bitter. Vengeful. Such intense emotions had no place in a 00′s world but James had felt them , as much as he hated to admit it.
‘James’. He thinks he much prefers being called Bond - there’s a sense of vulnerability with his first name he doesn’t like , an intimacy as if they were friends. IF IT WAS USED TO GET UNDER HIS SKIN , SAFIN HAS CERTAINLY SUCCEEDED. “Men who murder. Do you think us to be the same?” An eyebrow quirks. “Every now and again to keep the world moving - to save the lives of millions , a trigger has to be pulled. I’d say that’s a fair cry from chemical warfare , wouldn’t you?” HERAKLES NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN CREATED. Damn M! damn his arrogance. “I imagine it’s likely to end the same way for me as it did for my father , but i’ve learned to live with it if it keeps men like you from taking the lives of millions simply because you had a difficult childhood.” His hand tightens on his own gun , ready to move as quickly as his injured body enabled him , when needed.
Through some sort of sick rationale and warped idea of individual values, he did think the both of them to be the same, in a way. He could tell that Bond knew it, too. A begrudgingly shared understanding that the other did not seem too keen on discussing. The two had gone down paths that looked drastically different from the perspective on an onlooker, but he truly believed that they were more intertwined than they seemed. Frustratingly, the man in front of him seemed to have a lot that Safin hadn't been able to obtain himself. Though he would never admit it, there was a deep sense of envy he felt for Bond.
A CERTAIN GREEN - EYED JEALOUSY THAT WANTED HIS HEAD ON A STICK.
His carefully composed demeanour seemed to falter for just a short moment at the other's grossly watered down claim about his motivations, jaw visibly clenching and eyes narrowing in disdain. That was what he thought it was: a difficult childhood? That wasn't all it was. It couldn't be. Even the thought of entertaining such an idea made him feel increasingly sick — and hateful. Without a word, the trigger was pulled and a shot rang out, the deafening echo filling the surrounding concrete maze.

The chemist was no stranger to comments like that of which the Brit spat at him; a short quip on the latter's lack of understanding for 'men like him' was all too familiar. Whether it was in a business setting or a 'business' setting such as this, underhanded slights about his drive and ambition were commonplace in discussion. All it garnered from Safin anymore was a displeased sigh as if a slight inconvenience had occurred. As he listened to the ramblings of a bleeding man, a final statement from Bond on the matter caught his attention.
" Your words shock me, James." Catching 007 in hallway was both a blessing and a curse. A careful hand worn by years of chemical exposures rested firmly on a sleek handgun acting as an extension of himself, the only thing between him and his adversary. A lifeline. "Men who murder typically understand the importance of control greater than anyone." A man with a reputation like James' surely had a unique relationship with control of his own.
A small exhale of amusement followed the injured man's threat. "And you believe it will end well for you?"
@snakerooted liked for a starter and gets james!
“I don’t understand men like you - this need to play god.” James spits , blood dripping down his chin. HE’S SLUMPED AGAINST A WALL , TRYING TO GET HIS HEAD STRAIGHT. Chance would be a fine bloody thing. “It must be exhausting , the need to be in control of everything , can’t imagine it.” Yet ; if he gave it enough thought , wasn’t that what James did himself? deciding who lived and who died? it’s not a comparison he likes as true as it might be. “It won’t end well for you unfortunately , it never does. If it isn’t me that takes the shot it will be someone else.” 00′S HAVE ALWAYS BEEN EXPENDABLE UNFORTUNATLEY. A harsh lesson he’d had to learn whilst on a train fighting for a measly list. The scar on his shoulder still twinges now and again.

// Definitely a villain trope to give said character some sort of facial scar(s) / disfigurement and I think that whole narrative is interesting, to say the least.
Obviously speaking in reference to Safin. In my research on TCDD dioxin poisoning and its effects I saw a LOT of realllllyyyy sketchy articles about Viktor Yushchenko insulting his literal face in like actual news articles? Just reminds me of things I saw about Safin’s chemical burns and how “”ugly they are and they shouldn’t have been added””. Like bro what are people on. They had to be added for continuity. Also I think it would add some interesting points in his personal narrative u know. He has scars and he never will not <3
Why are people so shitty about these things. Not everyone has to be the most conventionally attractive person ever that’s so lame. Ok rant over I was just seething over Beauty Standards (TM)
