Golden Rules for Fanfiction Readers:

if the fic already has a thousand comments, comment still. Your comment will still matter and delight the author.

if a fic is a decade old and the author hasn’t been active in the last five years, comment still. There will come a time when the author will read and cherish your comment, or maybe it will motivate them enough to start writing again. You never know!

if the author never responds to comments, comment still. Interaction with the author is a very nice bonus, but you can be sure that even if the author doesn’t answer, they will read it and enjoy it at some point

there’s no such thing as a too long comment.

there’s no such thing as a too incoherent comment.

the author will give no flying fuck about any gramatical errors, typo or other misspellings. If you’re a non-native speaker struggling to express themselves, you can be sure the author will be all the more pleased that you surmounted the language barrier to let them know you appreciated their work. Don’t be afraid!

there’s no such thing as commenting too often.

you will never, ever come across as creepy by obsessing over a fic or an author to the point where you worry the author might think you’re a stalker. On the contrary, the author will be delighted by your investment in their work.

be positive and encouraging. Positive reviews make writers all warm and glowy from the inside, bashing plunge their soul into icy darkness. You want the first, not the second!

Let’s talk about the fabulous aromantics out there

Swallowing thickly, the teacher forced a pleasant smile onto their face as they peered up at the two terrifying creatures before them, trying not to fidget under their intimidating stares. When they had called for a parent teacher interview, they had not expected….this.

There had been concerns for the young child for quite some time due to several large red flags in their behaviour and physical state over the course of the two years they had been coming to this school. A couple of months ago these things had started to change, seemingly for the better, but the child had begun to draw rather disturbing images. 

Out of concern, the staff had decided that something finally had to be done, but staring at the two monstrous beasts and the happily beaming child standing before them, the teacher realised there was very little point. They had a feeling they knew exactly why things had changed so drastically and suddenly, just as they knew that this was something better left untouched… for everyone’s sake.

Crossplay Tutorial

Disclaimer: This is for female-to-male transformations OR for anyone that wants to look extra manly 

Materials you will need:  - fabric scissors  - hot glue OR a sewing machine (you can attach them with thread or glue, both will work equally well)  -  Approximately ½ yd cotton batting (the stuff you use to make quilts) You may need more or less depending on your size - (optional) fabric to make a sort of casing for your batting  1. Measure the two largest parts of your upper arm for both width and length.  2. Next, cut out 4 squares of batting which match those measurements.  3. Before you glue/sew anything, make sure they fit your arm the way you want them to. The should be tight enough to stay in place. Pin them together and see what they look like underneath your cosplay  4. Once you are satisfied with the fit, attach the two ends. Try them on one more time just to be safe, see how they look, etc… And that’s it! You now have detachable muscles for your cosplay to help you make a more convincing male character. This will help give you a more triangular upper body, especially if you have shoulder pads to aid you as well. Someone said, “Where did your hips go?!?“ when they saw me wearing these underneath my jacket!

Muscles! So, you see- it does make a difference!  

Other tips to aid you in your transformation- 1. Contouring. You may require more or less contouring depending on your character, but it is usually safe to say that you will need to do some amount of contouring. Boys tend to have more squared off jaws and defined cheekbones (not in all cases, of course- but that is just something that is immediately recognizable as being cosmetically masculine). I would suggest looking up both cosplay contouring and professional makeup contouring videos. 

2. Eyebrows. Fatten those babies up.  3. Cross your arms for pictures, pressing your forearms against one another to make them look larger/more defined.  4. Don’t let belts and such sit at where your natural waist is- instead, but it more toward your hips to trick people into thinking you have a straight torso.  5. Shape-wear- I would advise this for any body type with any cosplay just because it helps everything look more neat overall. Tools of the Trade

Edit: The second part, workspaces and materials is up!

This is a guide to some of the tools we use for cosplay and other hobby work. By no means is this list comprehensive or a list of tools every cosplayer is required to have. These are simply the things we have and what we find incredibly useful and we hope it will be helpful to all of you.

With any set of tools, they are a long-term investment. Most of these items are things we’ve had for several years or are new but will be used for several more years. When buying something new, stay within your budget, but don’t always go for the cheapest option. You want to buy something that will last and not something you’ll have to replace every few months. Coupons and sales are great for this; always try to use a 40-50% coupon on expensive items or get them when they’re on sale. Alternately, if you have a friend/family member/coworker/etc. you can borrow things from, that’s always a great option. Cata borrowed her mom’s sewing machine for several months before buying her own. 

Sewing Scissors: These scissors are for fabric only and nothing else. When you cut fabric, you want the blade to be as sharp as possible. Scissors snagging on fabric is the absolute worst. The scissors in the picture are Singer scissors and they work well enough. Cata plans on buying a pair of Gingher dressmaker’s shears down the road.

General Scissors: These scissors are for cutting everything that isn’t fabric or needs to be cut in a straight line. While general scissors can be any cheap pair of scissors that can be easily replaced, it’s nice having sharp, reliable scissors. The scissors shown above are from this set (if you have a Costco membership, they’re only 9 dollars) and quite sharp. You can easily use one pair for general work and one pair for cutting fabric.  

Detail Scissors: These came in a set with the sewing scissors. Cata uses them for snipping stray threads and detail cuts on fabric 

Rotary Cutter: A rotary cutter is perfect if you <need to cut straight lines (pair with a Quilter’s ruler for excellent results). These were used on craft foam, cardstock, denim, duckcloth, and vinyl without any issues. A rotary cutter isn’t necessary by any means, but it’s very convenient to have.
