Finally writing about the fate of Space Dad (tm)

I guess this is an unpopular opinion...and I’m finally sitting down to write it. Because I’ve been thinking about this for weeks.

I was actually fine with how Kanan died, and the fact that he did die.

I went in to the show knowing he had to go, and it was only reinforced as the seasons went on. And no, not because of a line the little green goblin said to Luke. But for one simple reason.

Kanan would never leave Hera.

It’s as simple as that. And the canon had made it clear Hera was still apart of the Rebellion, and a pretty big part of it. Putting her in R1, to Hoth and Endor? She was in the middle of all of it. And Kanan wasn’t there. As I said, he wouldn’t leave Hera, as much as he didn’t want to be part of the Rebellion? He was there for Hera. 

He listened to the Force, followed his Jedi teachings. But he was always there for Hera and their family.

And I was completely okay with how it happened, even if I’ve seen people claim it was “useless”

It actually wasn’t, and it sure as hell wasn’t useless to Kanan. That crew? That’s who his life was devoted to. He saved them, and his sacrifice helped save Ezra’s home. And that’s all he would have wanted.

Even the Emperor states that his death changed the fate of Lothal.

And honestly? I’m glad he died for something smaller, and not because of the Rebellion. Which, was something I’d feared they’d do. If he’d died for the Rebellion I would have been--well livid.

Kanan chose the steps that sealed his fate. He knew his death was coming, but he’d be dammed if he wasn’t going to make an impact against those who oppressed his son’s home.

Kanan was never going to be the Jedi who saved the Galaxy, he was always going to be the Jedi who saved his family.

I completely agree that Kanan chose and accepted how his life ended to save his family and complete the mission. I can't speak for anyone else, but that still doesn't lessen the pain of his loss for me. That will take some time. I do hope we get some sort of coda with Kanan beyond the Dume wolf.

To be fair, I never said it should lessen the pain. Because it sure didn’t for me, but it’s a fact that’s been looked over/hasn’t been mentioned in all of the analyzing of the last two episodes. And it’s something that plays a massive part of Jedi Night.

Tbh, it feels like the majority of the fandom has completely missed that Kanan chose how his death played out and that’s kinda surprising to me.

Yikes. I feel like I’m one of the only people who gets uncomfortable at people calling Adult Kanan Jarrus, Caleb Dume. He didn’t change his name back or revert to being a child. Being Kanan never held him back.

But why?

After her FINALLY public declaration?

I know somethings going to happen to Kanan, and Hera’s got a bigger picture with the Rebellion.

An implication that “Caleb” will split them is...to much of a cop out of everything they’ve been through

….Why is there speculation Kanan & Hera would spilt–or that “Caleb” would pull back from the relationship after that trailer???

Like, I’m sorry but no. If they’re pulled apart it is something forced. Kanan cut his hair, freed himself and you know his first stop? To go save Hera. Nothing, and I mean nothing has changed Kanan’s priorities. He’s just gotten rid of the barriers. He’s himself again, and you know what being himself is?

Protecting those he loves. Because yes, he’s a Jedi, a full Jedi. But a Jedi that uses his attachments to fuel him-make him stronger. They don’t weaken him.

Kanan is Caleb and Caleb is Kanan. He has, and always will continue to fight for his family no matter the sacrifices

Kanan Jarrus loved Hera Syndulla, and Hera loved Kanan.

But what about Caleb Dume?

Why wouldn’t she. 

Hera was the first person to see Caleb in Kanan, and that’s who she was most intrigued by, who she saw the most potential in. 

The first thing “Caleb” does is go and save her. A hair cut isn’t going to change that.

OKAY, I’M POSTING THIS HERE, but this is also from my RP blog but y’know

Kanan’s not becoming Caleb again, he’s not going to start telling people that his name is Caleb. So lets clear that out of the way.

Caleb isn’t a person he can be again. That person was a child, a very innocent, inquisitive child.

His hair? Yes he cut it, not to revert himself back to the child, but to break through the chains he bound himself in. It was time for his official rebirth as Kanan Jarrus Jedi Knight. His hair was almost like a security blanket. He’d hid his face with the full beard because he was ashamed of his scars. Malachor broke him, it broke him almost as much as the purge itself. He used his hair to hide himself, the mask to cover the rest. Season 4 was Kanan rediscovering himself, it was him healing and coming to terms with everything

Cutting his hair? It was freeing him from the bonds he’d tied himself in. No facial hair, no mask. He’s leaving himself exposed. The most exposed he’s ever been in his life. And he’s never felt so free.

Cutting his hair was to free himself, it lets him be himself again. He hasn’t felt this much like himself again since well before Malachor.

So…bottom line is, don’t start calling him Caleb, he is Kanan, it’s the person he built himself in to and now he’s being Kanan to his fullest ability.
